Krystal Patton of VRC to participate in Veterans Day Events

Krystal Patton, Interim Director of the Veterans Resource Center, reports The U.S. Navy is “sailing” into Santa Fe for Navy Week, featuring live demonstrations, performances, and engagements, November 8-14, 2021. Navy Week is the service’s signature outreach program, designed to give the citizens of Santa Fe the opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity. Navy Weeks are coordinated by the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO).

The Navy is highlighting “Sailors of Santa Fe,” citizens within the community who have served in the Navy. “With prior Navy service the organization has asked me to lead The Pledge of Allegiance at the Veterans Day ceremony,” Patton said.

Veterans Day at SFCC, flags on campus and video

At SFCC, the VRC and Office of Student Development will be placing flags along the westside of campus as was done last year. Those driving by on Richards will be able to see the flags and we will have these up the week of November 8-12. These flags represent our current student veterans and honor the veterans of the dependents who are attending SFCC this semester. Our faculty and staff who have served, as well as their family members will also be honored. Each flag will also have a name tag honoring a specific veteran. Send the names and branch of service to Mary Eleas at SARESERVE@sfcc.edu.

SFCC will post a Veterans Day salute video on YouTube on Nov. 11.

SFCC welcomes CNM colleagues November 11

This Thursday, Nov. 11, SFCC welcomes 15 colleagues from Central New Mexico Community College. They are participants in CNM’s Executive Leadership Year. ELY, as it’s known, brings together emerging leaders throughout the college in a year-long exploration of leadership. The group will visit Main Campus to learn more about SFCC and for us to learn more about CNM so that we can build relationships and learn from each other.

After a tour of campus led by Director of Student Recruitment & Outreach Marcos Maez, they will attend a luncheon. President Rowley will provide the plenary, and share her leadership journey in higher education. Following lunch, faculty and staff from both colleges with meet with their counterparts for peer-to-peer discussions. This event is separate from, but will nourish, our strong partnership with CNM through the CHESS ERP project. If you see our CNM colleagues while they are here, be sure to say hello.

World Aids Day Events Dec. 1 & 2

SFCC will offer two events that are open to the public via Zoom in recognition of World AIDS Day.

6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1
The first event is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 when several contributors to Between Certain Death and a Possible Future: Queer Writing on Growing Up with the AIDS Crisis read from the newly released book, followed by a Q&A with the book’s editor and contributing authors.

12:15 to 3:30 p.m. Dec.2
The second event will happen from 12:15 to 3:30 p.m. Dec.2 when there will be the showing of the film: United in Anger: A History of Act Up (2012) followed by Q & A with queer author and scholar Sarah Schulman.

Deyanira "Deya" Contreras becomes Director of Kids Campus

Santa Fe Community College announces Deyanira “Deya” Contreras was selected as Director of Kids Campus. Contreras, an experienced bilingual early childhood educator and administrator, began her role as director on October 25.

Contreras brings 15 years of experience in the early childhood field – eight years as an infant, toddler, early pre-K and pre-K bilingual teacher and seven years of administrative experience as a director and assistant director. She also has worked as a faculty member since 2018 in the SFCC Teacher Education program. Contreras has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood multicultural education from New Mexico Highlands University and a master’s degree in early childhood education from Grand Canyon University.

In Memoriam: John Paul LeDoux, Ph.D.

SFCC extends heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and students of Professor John LeDoux, Ph.D., a beloved instructor of Spanish, who passed away on October 19. He retired in 2019 after teaching for almost 20 years at the college.

First Massage Therapy grads celebrate program completion

Congratulations to the graduates of the SFCC Massage Therapy Program. They have completed the education requirements to sit for the National Exam and apply for a New Mexico Massage Therapy License, after which they become professional LMTs! Our graduates received both a Certificate and Associate Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Massage Therapy.

The students gathered for a photo in front of the Ethyl the Whale (sculpture) on their last day to celebrate their amazing accomplishment of not only being the first cohort to complete the massage therapy program, but also during a pandemic! The five graduates completed the program, have scheduled their National Exam for next month and after they have passed the exam then will be able to work as professionals in the field of massage therapy.

SFCC is now accepting applications for the Massage Therapy program for the Spring 2022 semester! Please visit Massage Therapy’s program page for more information.

Julianna Santillanes is the lead instructor and contact for questions regarding the program. The Program Director Ute Jannsen-Kerr and Julianna Santillanes first met to design the program in August 2019, started the first cohort in August 2020, and are happy to have graduated the first cohort in October 2021, as well as welcome new students!

Sewer line repairs ongoing

Facilities and Operations started sewer line repairs at the SFCC main campus on October 18.

Repairs will be taking place in room 131 Continuing Education, and 415 Culinary Arts. Surrounding areas may hear loud noises coming from these rooms during the time of this project.

SFCC’s School of Arts, Design and Media Arts Faculty and Staff Exhibition continues through January 13.You’re encouraged to stop by from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday when the campus is open. Also invite your friends and prospective art students to stop by. The public is welcome to visit but must wear a mask while on SFCC’s campus.

SFCC has outstanding fine art, design, and media art studios. The faculty and staff are recognized artists both locally and on the national level.

Kids Campus openings

Kids Campus at SFCC has a few openings available for our FREE Early Program! All children must have reached their third (3rd) birthday before September 1, 2021.

Kids Campus free Early Pre-K hours are Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays from 8:30-11:30 am.

We also offer a wraparound program, which includes one extra hour in the morning (7:30-8:30 a.m.) and one extra hour in the afternoon (2-3 p.m) for a monthly fee of $350. We do not offer after-care on Fridays.

Spring 2022 Registration opens this week

Spring 2022 priority registration (those who have 30-hours or more and declared degree) opens today, November 8. It opens to everyone else tomorrow, November 9.

The spring semester begins Tuesday, January 19.The college has developed a guide to registering detailed at https://www.sfcc.edu/look-for-a-credit-class/.
If you are registering for in-person classes, be sure to provide proof of vaccination via the SFCC Health Screener App. See https://www.sfcc.edu/covid/sfcc-health-screener/ for guidance on how to upload your documentation.

Student Employment Opportunities are available!

Student Work Study is a financial aid need-based program that provides a student funds earned through part-time employment and pays the minimum wage for Santa Fe County.

Eligible students can work up to 20 hours per week and work is scheduled around your school schedule. In addition to helping you pay for your education, the work-study program helps you gain work experience, develop your skills, and build a possible pathway to future employment opportunities.

To be eligible, students must meet the following requirements:

• Must complete the 2021-2022 FAFSA and any additional requested verification items
• Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 degree related credit hours for fall.
• Must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Online Parent Support Group begins Nov. 2

Jocelyn Hernandez Monsalvo, SFCC Student Resource Coordinator, and Rosalie Lipfert, SFCC Counselor, are offering an online Parent Support Group for SFCC student parents.

The group will meet on Zoom for one hour at 10 a.m. Tuesdays beginning November 2 until the end of the semester. Discussion topics will include navigating resources, focusing and study strategies, asking for help, setting boundaries, establishing a support system, and envisioning the future after SFCC. The group is free, confidential, and not part of your student record.

The meeting dates are November 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30.

The WOW Award for the month of October 2021

Teresa Roybal, nominated by Toni Coffman.

I am nominating Teresa Roybal for her outstanding work that she has done recently for the adjunct faculty. The system she put in place in August for adjunct contract signing was flawless. She sent out clear instruction as to the process and sent out notification
during each step. This was a tremendous effort considering the amount of adjunct faculty and multiple contracts that are signed. In addition she recently aided the Faculty Senate Adjunct Representatives by preparing a spreadsheet of adjunct faculty members and their email address so that we could update the adjunct faculty email list that was outdated. This was quite a task and one that we greatly appreciated and allowed OIT to do the update. She is always going out of her way to go the extra mile.

Understanding and addressing how the National Political Climate for LGBTQIA+ folx directly impacts New Mexico’s students, faculty and staff.

Description:
With the current shift in the Presidency, laws that once protected, and still protect LGBTQIA+ folx have once again been taken into question. These laws which are vulnerable to shifting political climates result as uncertain, mercurial, and at times, frightening. This presentation will highlight how the National landscape directly impacts New Mexico’s LGBTQIA+ students, faculty and staff in our post-secondary college system. Together, we will discuss emerging nomenclature, discuss how institutions can better meet the needs of these populations, and consider how to sustain this work over time.

MFA requirement Nov. 8, opt-in now!

SFCC Office of Information Technology (OIT) is integrating Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) as a security best practice. MFA improves the security of our accounts, data, and information. MFA will be required for Microsoft applications by November 12, 2021. Early opt-in is available through November 8. Required implementation between November 8 and 12. Submit an OIT ticket to opt-in.

MFA is when a user must provide two or more pieces of evidence to verify their identity to gain access to an app or digital resource. MFA is used to protect against hackers by ensuring that digital users are who they say they are.

MFA will require you to configure an authentication device for MFA. You can either use the Microsoft authenticator app or configure a phone number for either SMS or phone call.

After MFA is enabled, upon your next login to MS Office 365, it will redirect you to a page where you can choose your MFA. You can either:

• provide a telephone number to receive a code via a phone call or text message, or
• configure the Microsoft authenticator app, which will have to be downloaded through your cell phone’s app store. OIT suggests the use of the Microsoft Authenticator app over codes as it is considered more secure.

After this is completed, any new logins to Microsoft 365 applications will trigger verification via the method you’ve selected.

After the early opt-in period, OIT will require MFA implementation by department. OIT will contact employees who have not yet configured MFA during the week of November 8. You can opt-in now at your leisure to reduce stress when the requirement goes into effect between November 8 and 12 with MFA completed for all users by November 12.

Gerard Martínez y Valencia producer of "A Song For Ruth" mini-doc

Gerard Martínez y Valencia is a producer of a mini-documentary film project that follows the creative process of a musical composition titled “Remembering Ruth Bader Ginsburg” by distinguished American composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. The Dallas Symphony performed the world premiere of “Remembering Ruth Bader Ginsburg” on October 7, 2021.

• If you are feeling ill, you should not come into work, and avoid any type of social setting. The College wants you to feel better before you return to work.

• If you are feeling ill: Get tested and isolate yourself from others as much as possible. We need to help mitigate the health risk to others.
