3-16: Intellectual Property and Copyright – Procedures

A. Creation of Intellectual Property and Copyright

Santa Fe Community College (SFCC or College) employees and students who create and own intellectual property and copyrights are highly encouraged to disclose their patents, trademarks, and copyrights to the Executive Director of Marketing.

Owners of intellectual property and copyrights are encouraged to notify the Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations to provide permission for the Marketing and Public Relations Department (MPR) to publicize the information. MPR will promote intellectual property and copyrights awarded by College employees as appropriate.

Any specific contract between the College and any SFCC employee or student for the creation of intellectual property will comply with all contractual policies and procedures of SFCC.

B. Use of Intellectual Property and Copyright

SFCC employees and students who wish to use copyrighted materials in their academic endeavors will be responsible for obtaining permission from copyright owners for all use that does not fall under fair use guidelines as outlined by the U.S. Copyright Office.

SFCC employees and students will provide a copy of copyright permission to the SFCC Library Director who shall maintain a file of all permissions.

Violations of copyright are governed by law. In addition, violators are subject to these SFCC policies:

  • Policy 2-1 Student Code of Conduct
  • Policy 2-2 Student Corrective Action and Disciplinary Action
  • Policy 4-1 Workplace Ethics and Code of Conduct
  • Policy 4-2 Employee Corrective Action and Disciplinary Action
