Dr. Stephen Martinez: "Know Your Rights" on Constitution Day, Sept. 17
In observance of Constitution Day, Stephen Martinez, Ph.D., will speak about “Know Your Rights” from 11:30 to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in Board Room (Room 223). Learn more about the U.S. Constitution. Everyone is invited to attend.

Spirit of Writing Art and Social Justice Collective open to all
The SFCC Spirit of Writing Art and Social Justice Collective, AKA SOW, began in Spring 2017. It was started by students interested in having space to workshop and share, as well as explore intersections of art, culture, and justice. All are welcome to attend, including listeners, fans and organizers.
SOW meets 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays in the student lounge in Media Arts, the 600s hallway.
On October 14, SOW and the SFCC Library will host an Indigenous People’s Day Reading. If you’re interested in reading a 5 to 7 minute piece or helping with event visioning and planning, please email emily.stern@sfcc.edu or tyrone.wright@sfcc.edu.
Thanks to all who helped build our enrollment for fall!
We’re excited to report that our enrollment (as of Sept. 13) is down less than 1 percent due to the hard work of so many. As many of you might recall, a year ago it was projected that SFCC could have a 10 percent drop in enrollment due to a variety of factors.
A big shout out to thank everyone who contributed to this success! Sometimes it takes more than a village.
In addition, to all of the outreach done by Marcos Maez and MPR’s recruitment team, we have to thank ALL for their collaboration and outreach efforts to prospective and continuing students who had yet to register, to students who had not registered for a number of semesters, and to students who were in jeopardy of being disenrolled for non-payment during the weeks leading up to the semester! SFCC Associate Vice President for Student Success Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos led that effort.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our students’ success!
La Tertulia: Conversación en español
La Tertulia is a free conversation group open to students, faculty, staff and community members, led by native speakers of Spanish. These gatherings are designed to provide an opportunity to practice Spanish in a comfortable & stimulating environment, regardless of the level of proficiency.

Administrative leave still available for the Balloon Fiesta/NM celebrations
It’s time to enjoy New Mexico’s unique celebrations! President Becky Rowley is authorizing four hours of administrative leave for full-time ‘regular status’ employees (prorated for those employees working part-time/regular status). Use this time to participate in local community events, such as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Oct. 5-13.
Please consult with your supervisor to coordinate your time off. A few rules: you must take the hours between Friday, August 30 and Sunday, October 13, 2019. Administrative leave cannot be accumulated for use outside this time period and cannot be considered as work time for purposes of overtime compensation. Supervisors are reminded to schedule this time off in a way that does not negatively impact services. See Policy 4-35 Leave.
Join the trail running group on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and walking group on Thursdays
The college offers employees a meet-up for current and “newbie” trail runners in front of the William C. Fitness Education Center at 6:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Please note: The time has changed to 6:30 a.m., so runners will be ready for their workday. All are welcome. Please note: The running group has added Thursdays due to increased interest.
The Walking Group has moved to Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., also meeting in front of the FEC.
For questions in regards to the trail running, please contact Herman Garcia and questions in regards to the Walking Group should go to Ute Jannsen-Kerr.
ESCALA HSI Faculty Summer Retreat
A select group of SFCC faculty and staff representatives recently attended the ESCALA Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Faculty Summer Retreat.
The ESCALA HSI Faculty Summer Retreat is the only teaching workshop that focuses on increasing student success in Hispanic-Serving Institutions through culturally relevant teaching.
