SFCC Faculty and Staff attend ESCALA HSI Faculty Summer Retreat

A select group of SFCC faculty and staff representatives recently attended the ESCALA Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSI) Faculty Summer Retreat.

The ESCALA HSI Faculty Summer Retreat is the only teaching workshop that focuses on increasing student success in Hispanic Serving Institutions through culturally relevant teaching.

The Summer Retreat is the kickoff of the Certificate of College Teaching & Learning in HSIs, a 27- hour faculty program designed by ESCALA that includes not only the Summer Retreat but also work you’ll do when you return to your home campus in Fall.

Faculty complete the Certificate by conducting a small study of their teaching and student learning in a Fall course, meeting several times online with an ESCALA trained coach, and reading and discussing scholarly articles about teaching and learning.

The Certificate concludes in December when the participants present their project findings and learning in a 15-minute ‘teach back’ presentation, either on their campus or on Zoom with other ESCALA Certificate finishers.

The following SFCC faculty and staff attended the program this year:
Aamna Nayyar
Sahaj Khalsa
Steve Martinez
Andrea Archuleta
Lucas Gonzales

The participants wish to thank Ann Black for getting the financial support to make it possible for SFCC Staff and Faculty to attend the Certificate in College Teaching & Learning 2019 program by ESCALA, hosted at Hilton Santa Fe in summer 2019.
