Congratulations to Ian Widrick Martinez, who was sworn as Student Government Association President by SFCC Governing Board Chair Linda Siegle on Wednesday, August 28.

SFCC Continuing Education Open House
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday
Ever wanted to learn a second language? The Spanish course offerings are many but French, German and Italian are also available. Ever wanted to impress your friends with your creations in the kitchen or learn more about how nutrition supports health? Thinking about retirement? Get tips on a wide range of considerations as you prepare for that stage of your life. Find out about these offerings and much more during the Continuing Education open house at Santa Fe Community College, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 5 in the hallway outside the Continuing Education Office, 6401 Richards Avenue.
Instructors will be displaying their work and talking to students about their classes. Students can register for classes, and President Rowley will stop by from 10 to 10:30 am. Refreshments will be served.

Deadline to register for Tennis Tournament extended until Sept. 4
Tennis Tournament at the FEC, September 6-8. Men’s & Women’s Singles, Men’s & Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles at the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center (FEC).
First rounds will start at 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, the rounds will start at 8:30 a.m. Participants must be at least 18 years of age with a 3.5 rating or lower.

DWELL Art Exhibit closes Friday, Sept. 6
If you haven’t been to the Visual Arts Gallery for the DWELL exhibit, you still have one week to catch this five-artist exhibition.
Patricia Pearce, director of SFCC’s Center for Book Art and Printmaking, said, “The five artists in the show address the mysteries of dwelling in connection with sculpture, printmaking, altered book, photography and textile.”

Opinions columnist at the Washington Post – offers his thoughts on internal Iranian developments, U.S.-Iran relations. He will also discuss Prisoner: My 544 Days in an Iranian Prison―Solitary Confinement, a Sham Trial, High-Stakes Diplomacy, and the Extraordinary Efforts It Took to Get Me Out.
The event is free for students and teachers who register with the Santa Fe Council for International Relations in advance. $15 for nonmembers at the door.

Submit your work to Santa Fe Literary Review
The submission period for the 2020 issue of The Santa Fe Literary Review is now open through November 1. This year’s theme is The Spaces Between Exploring freedom, distance, movement and time.
Submission categories include dramatic writing, creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction and visual art. Details are online, or for more info email sflr@sfcc.edu.

Deadline to apply for Santa Fe Reporter internship is Sept. 6
The Santa Fe Reporter is offering a paid internship opportunity. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 6.
The internship is run through the Santa Fe Reporter’s nonprofit arm, runs six weeks, pays $500 and, upon successful completion, students have their work published in the Santa Fe Reporter and receive a certificate. Julia Goldberg, an outstanding journalist, runs the program, so students work directly with her. Please note that part of the application requests: Please provide a short (five to eight paragraphs) arts-related writing sample; for example: a book, theater, movie or music review.
Petition to Graduate due on Sept. 6.
To apply for graduation, log-in to MySFCC (student portal) and locate the Petition to Graduate link and follow the prompts for the appropriate graduation term. Students must be fully classified in the major before applying for graduation.
In order to participate in the Commencement Ceremony, your Petition to Graduate must be received in the Registrar’s Office by 5.p.m. on Friday, November 1, 2019 with all required signatures.

Career Services now offers extended Walk In Clinic hours
Work all day? SFCC Evening student? Want to meet with a Career Counselor, but can’t get in earlier?
Career Services has begun adding SPECIAL EXTENDED HOURS to two of the Walk In Clinics in September (Sept. 3 and 17), with more to come in October.

Last Day to Drop with Refund Sept. 6
Friday is the last day to drop a class and receive a refund. Students who are thinking of dropping should consult the Financial Aid Office, since it can impact your aid.
Also, students should consider speaking to an advisor at the Welcome and Advising Center before dropping a class, since it could impact your degree or certificate plan.

Jonathan Harrell and Roxanne Tapia perform in Word Over All through Sept. 8
Academic Advisor Jonathan Harrell and MPR’s “new Jennifer” Roxanne Tapia will be performing in Teatro Paraguas’ ¡Poesia Viva! poetry performance of WORD OVER ALL Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda.
Jonathan will be playing guitar, singing and performing poetry. Roxanne will be performing poetry and acting, including a brief appearance as a bird in Pablo Neruda’s Pájaro.
Word Over All runs one more weekend: Sept. 5-8. Don’t miss it!
Administrative leave through October 13 for NM celebrations
It’s time to enjoy New Mexico’s unique celebrations! President Becky Rowley is authorizing four hours of administrative leave for full-time ‘regular status’ employees (prorated for those employees working part-time/regular status). Use this time to participate in local community events, such as:
• Aug. 30: Zozobra
• Aug. 31-Sept. 8: Fiesta de Santa Fe
• Sept. 5-15: New Mexico State Fair
• Oct. 5-13: Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Please consult with your supervisor to coordinate your time off. A few rules: you must take the hours between Friday, August 30 and Sunday, October 13, 2019. Administrative leave cannot be accumulated for use outside this time period and cannot be considered as work time for purposes of overtime compensation. Supervisors are reminded to schedule this time off in a way that does not negatively impact services. See Policy 4-35 Leave.
