What:   sj Miller, Ph.D. will present “Gender Identity Justice in Schools and Communities.”  SFCC Library invites everyone to a scheduled Zoom meeting. The audience will view sj Miller’s TEDTalk and there will be a book discussion about Dr. Miller’s new book: Gender Identity Justice in Schools and Communities. Bios/Additional Facts:   Bio: sj Miller, Ph.D., a trans*+ disciplinary award-winning teacher, writer, activist, and scholar, is an associate professor of Teacher Education in the Teacher Academy at Santa Fe Community College. sj is a literacy specialist whose emphasis is on social justice and gender identity in pre-K through university level teaching.

sj has written more than 25 book chapters, more than 50 articles, eight books, including Teaching, Affirming, and Recognizing Trans and Gender Creative Youth: A Queer Literacy Framework, which was translated into Spanish by UNESCO and awarded the 2017 AERA Exemplary Research Award for Outstanding Book and the 2018 Outstanding Book by the Michigan Council of Teachers of English.

sj is an Academic Studies Member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Advisory Board for the National Council Teachers of English (NCTE); consultant for the College Board providing best practices to secondary Advanced Placement English teachers, and AP Literature Table Leader; editor of the inaugural series, “Spaces In-between: Beyond Binary Gender Identities and Sexualities” (Teachers College Press); and co-editor of the series “Social Justice Across Contexts in Education.”

sj is column editor of “Beyond Binary Gender Identities” for the English Journal; advisory board member for Routledge’s Critical Studies in Gender and Sexuality in Education, Palgrave MacMillan’s Queer Studies in Education, Journal of Literacy Research, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Teacher Education and Black Communities, Journal of LGBT Youth, and Taboo.

sj is a contributor to CBS News, BBC and PBS and appeared in the feature documentary, Gender: The Space Between on CBS. sj gives keynotes across the world and consults on professional development for teaching, affirming, and recognizing trans*+ and gender creative/expansive students.

In April 2019, sj received the AERA Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research Award. sj’s latest books about Gender Identity Justice in Schools and Communities and the co-written book Navigating Trans*+ and Complex Gender Identities were recently published. sj recently presented at the TEDMED Conference on Gender Identity Justice.
