Santa Fe Community College announces the Santa Fe Creative Coding Initiative (SFCCI) will present the first SFCCI Student Showcase, 4:30 to 7 p.m. May 2 at the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road. The event is free and open to the public.

SFCCI is a community partnership, providing challenge-based learning opportunities in digital creativity and coding to learners and educators throughout Santa Fe, with support from Apple’s Community Education Initiative. Since the launch of SFCCI more than 300 students have participated.

SFCCI Director Jim Sanborn said,This is our first student showcase; we’re really excited for our students. For many, our initiative has provided their first exposure to coding and digital media projects using Apple technology. The showcase is really a celebration of learning and accomplishment, offering students a forum to share their work and experiences. It will be an inspiring community event.”

The SFCCI Student Showcase will spotlight content produced by students using Apple technology and curricula during this school year. SFCCI has learning labs at Santa Fe High School, Milagro Middle School, Santa Fe Community College, and Santa Fe Indian School. Other key partners include STEM Santa Fe and the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Fe/Del Norte, which operates the Teen Center and the Tech Club at the Santa Fe Place Mall.  In addition to these learning labs, the Santa Fe Public Schools 21st Century Learning program is introducing coding on iPad to elementary school students at various sites.

The event will feature over 20 student presentations of student learning. Some highlights of the SFCCI showcase include:

  • A demo of an app developed by students at Santa Fe Indian School to help manage the school.
  • The Boys and Girls club will present an app design they are working on for their membership.
  • SFCCI classrooms will be open during the event for people to learn more about the program.
