President Rowley shares statement about Supreme Court affirmative action ruling
“The Supreme Court’s recent ruling to end affirmative action in the college admissions process is a disheartening action that will resonate throughout all corners of higher education, including community colleges like ours. Santa Fe Community College is an open enrollment campus, as well as a designated sanctuary campus, and remains steadfast in its commitment to our underrepresented students and residents. This unfortunate Supreme Court decision is a reminder that institutions of higher education must take additional proactive steps to identify and counter the deeply engrained systems and perceptions of racial, gender, socioeconomic and additional biases that exist in our country and communities. Members of the College are engaging in conversations both internally and externally to ensure that strong and proactive steps are taken to protect and support students of color as they navigate the college process and find meaningful careers and enriched lives. Santa Fe Community College remains committed to breaking down systemic barriers of discrimination and we stand in solidarity with our peer colleges and universities throughout the country who are outraged by this decision.”

The East Wing Eatery is closed for the summer. SFCC hopes to have it re-open during the fall semester. We’ll share in Campus Weekly any updates.
SFCC launches new web page for online programs
Santa Fe Community College SFCC has launched a web page that provides a basic guide to programs offered online. Visit https://www.sfcc.edu/online/ to check out the options.
Please note https://www.sfcc.edu/online/ is an evolving web page that will be updated. Some of the programs listed also have in-person classes available, as well as online classes. An online college education offers students the opportunity to study from the comfort of home and on a flexible schedule. Classes are often available on demand and students can access course materials and assignments from anywhere with an internet connection.
SFCC offers a variety of online programs to earn a certificate and/or an associate degree. These offerings include programs in: Accounting, Alternative Teacher Licensure, American Sign Language & Interpreter Preparation, Business Administration, Creative Writing, Human Services, Information Services and Computer Science, Nutrition, Paralegal Studies and Psychology. Prospective students should reach out to the program contact on the individual program pages to determine if the program will help them achieve their academic and career goals.
Prospective students who have not attended the college in the past should visit https://www.sfcc.edu/get-started/apply-and-register/. Returning students should set up an appointment with an advisor to make sure when they enroll that the courses will fit into a certificate or degree plan. Visit https://www.sfcc.edu/offices/academic-advising/ to set up either an online or in-person advising appointment.
Prospective students should also be aware that in the past year, the college has expanded its in-person offerings in many subject areas. For many programs, hands-on experience is key to developing career skills. Prospective students should think about what type of classes fits their personal learning style.
Visit https://www.sfcc.edu/online-learning-at-sfcc/ to read more about the types of online classes offered at the college. Also, read https://www.sfcc.edu/technical-considerations/ to make sure you have access to the proper internet connections and equipment to participate in online classes.

Enhancements to SFCC.edu
In an email on Thursday, June 13 Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations Todd Lovato shared the following about the public website:
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing today to update you on an exciting development on our public website. For more than a year, a team of my MPR teammates have worked on a project to enhance our website offerings for prospective students.
We are pleased to announce that some of these website revisions – which include some updates to program and department pages – are being introduced today. Website updates and adaptations are an ongoing process. I’d like to point out, however, that the focus of these latest revisions was primarily to enhance the experience of prospective students on our site as they navigate the admissions process and explore educational pathways at SFCC. The updates provide enhanced access to career information, registration guidance and support resources. They also address some on-going technical and user navigation issues.
Many of the recent updates are best viewed by exploring SFCC offerings via the college’s Educational Pathways landing page.
These enhancements have been carefully developed using higher education best practice research, website and search engine optimization (SEO) traffic analytics, consultation with local web developers and writers, as well as ongoing consultation and collaboration with many of our colleagues throughout the campus.
Also, please note that these changes provide MPR with new features and additional ways to collaborate with programs and departments to further improve the website and provide prospective students easier access to information about college programs.
As with any web updates, there is the possibility of small, easily fixable glitches like broken links or re-directs. As we comb for these bugs, I ask for your help by keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Please contact MPR with these updates using the MPR Job Request Form. This will enable us to quickly address issues. Please continue to review and update your department’s respective webpages for out-of-date or excessive information. Please note, today’s message pertains to the college’s public website, and does not include changes to MySFCC or the SFCC Connect Intranet, which are not under MPR’s purview.
I’d like to thank my MPR team and colleagues across campus for their persistence, collaborative energy, and continued focus on our college’s future students.
We look forward to continuing to work with you in promoting SFCC’s outstanding programs to our community.

The college will be transitioning bookstore management and operations from Barnes and Noble College to Follett Higher Education. This transition will officially occur on June 30, 2023.
Barnes and Noble has been handling adoptions for all summer classes that started on June 5 and Barnes & Noble has communicated that there are no problems with course materials at this time.
The courses scheduled for the Summer II Semester that begins on July 3, 2023, do not currently have any course material or textbook requirements. Therefore, Summer II courses will not be compromised during the transition.
Barnes and Noble has also communicated the below important dates relating to course materials:
- All summer term course materials will be available in the campus store until the week of June 19.
- Barnes and Noble’s last day of business will be Friday June 23, 2023, to clear equipment and take inventory prior to June 30, 2023.
In addition, the campus store will have to be closed the week of July 3- July 7 so that Follett Higher Education can set up operations. Follet will reopen the campus store on July 10. After the reopening on July 10, Follett will be communicating the course material adoption process for the Fall Semester 2023.
The SFCC Office of Information Technology is currently working with Follett to setup IT systems. After the essential IT systems are functional, the college will be working on integrating Financial Aid processes. We will let the college know of any new Financial Aid process requirement as we change to Follett.
We appreciate your patience as we make this transition on a very short timeline.

SFCC Wastewater Treatment Plant closure & decommissioning work through July 2023
SFCC is in its final phase to permanently close our Wastewater treatment plant and transfer our waste to Ranchland Utility regional facility. This will benefit SFCC in several ways, including reuse of treated water for irrigation purposes used in the local community, no additional capitol funding resources needed to support 36+ old infrastructure that has extended beyond its useful life, and future opportunities to repurpose land in accordance with SFCC 2021 Master Plan.
There will be construction activities extending through July 2023. Please note there will be no impact to services during this project. For more information contact Andrea Mueller, Facilities & Operations Assistant Director & Campus Planning at andrea.mueller1@sfcc.edu or 505-930-9781.
Required COVID-19 Reporting
SFCC continues to monitor and follow guidance from public health officials and state and local government on mitigating and addressing exposure to COVID-19. The State of New Mexico and New Mexico Higher Education Department recently announced they will no longer require the reporting of COVID-19 cases amongst student, staff, and faculty who are on campus via the Rapid Response Submission Portal.
Our college continues to take the transmission and threat of infectious diseases seriously and we remain committed to keeping our community as safe as possible. Please note the following:
- The college no longer requires reporting of COVID-19 positive cases to SFCC’s Contact Tracing Team.
- However, it is very important we continue keep each other safe and follow health and safety best practices. The college continues to follow guidelines from the CDC Quarantine and Isolation Calculator, which details the following:
- You should isolate from others when you have COVID-19.
- You should also isolate if you are sick and suspect that you have COVID-19 but do not yet have test results.
- Ending isolation is detailed on the CDC’s Isolation and Precautions for People with COVID-19 webpage – “Ending Isolation”.
- Positive or suspected positive individuals should coordinate closely with supervisors to make appropriate accommodations, as well as reporting for absences using regular sick leave.
- If you are out of sick leave and contracted COVID-19, please contact the Office for Human Resources to determine if other options are available to you.
- The college custodial staff continues its rigorous cleaning and disinfecting protocols, which includes a campus-wide daily schedule, with emphasis on bathrooms, and higher traffic and enclosed spaces.
- Additionally, Facilities and Operations staff have made significant improvements to college ventilation and filtration systems and those systems are up and running.
The College will continue to follow best practices, community levels, and infectious disease developments.

See this video of the latest presentation from the SFCC Library – How do you spell the future with AI. This was the conversation from April 27.
Message about preferred names
Dear Faculty,
While the college has always supported our students, we now have another technological opportunity to provide an empowering, safe, and nondiscriminatory educational and work environment. Beginning on Monday February 6, students will be able update their preferred name in Self Service Banner (SSB9).
The student’s legal name will be on your class roster and their preferred name, if applicable, will appear in parenthesis. For example, Gonzales, Bernadette (Charmaine). For legal purposes, the student’s legal name will still appear on all formal documents such as Financial Aid information, 1098-T’s and transcripts.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
With kind regards,
Bernadette Gonzales. MA Ed. (she, her, hers)

Work has begun on connector roads to SFCC
Work expected to continue until fall
The Santa Fe New Mexican reported in the Jan. 25 story, “County hopes construction of connector roads leads to growth south of city,” that “Santa Fe County is starting the construction phase of a more than $20 million infrastructure project 20 years in the making, which aims to provide better access to Santa Fe Community College and accommodate future growth south of the city. …
“The “northeast connector” involves construction of roadway and two roundabout intersections between Dinosaur Trail and Rabbit Road, giving drivers a direct route between them. Currently, drivers traveling west from Rabbit Road are required to drive through the Oshara Village subdivision to reach Dinosaur Trail or busy Richards Avenue.
“The “southeast connector” will serve as an alternate route from Rabbit Road to Avenida del Sur to reduce traffic congestion on Richards Avenue. This route also will provide secondary emergency access to the community college, according to the county.”
