SFCC Student Weekly Connection 08/26/2022

Dear Students:

Welcome to Fall 2022!  We hope you have eased into your classes that began on Monday, August 22.  There were a few technical hiccups the first few days, but I am happy to learn that your online courses should not have been disrupted.  The first few weeks are critical to your success throughout the semester.  Please be sure to find YOUR balance – time management is key to your success.  Block out time for your classes, yes even your asynchronous classes need to have appropriate time designated so you don’t fall behind.  Block at least two-hours a week for studying time for each class.  Schedule your commute if you have to run your kiddos to school, or for you to go to work.  Be sure to identify the time needed for other responsibilities such as work, children, parents, etc.  Most importantly, make sure you give yourself mental-health time.  You need to give your body, soul and mind a break to reset and get ready for the following week.  Our awesome academic advisors are available to help you with time management so be sure to reach out if you need help!  We also have a great counseling center who can help you work through some things that may be blocking your ability to be successful.  Again, be sure to reach out!  You can access contact information for these offices and many more through your MYSFCC page.

We understand paying for school can be a challenge.  Be sure to work with our financial assistance team to complete your 2022-2023 FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov)!  To be considered for federal or state aid, including the Opportunity Scholarship, you must complete the FAFSA and your financial aid file.  Our great financial aid team is also accepting appointments and can be reached through your MYSFCC page.

A few final thoughts.  We encourage you to get involved with clubs and organizations we offer at our College.  Our strong Student Government Association is also looking for some great representatives.  Get involved and let your voice be heard!  Also, make a friend.  Take time out of your day to meet new people.  All our college associates are available and willing to offer any assistance, but don’t forget about your peers – meet someone new and make a friend for life!

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me personally if I can assist you in your academic journey at SFCC.  We welcome you and look forward to your continued success as an outstanding SFCC student!

Always your champion,

Dr. Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos

Associate Vice President of Student Affairs
