Santa Fe Community College presents a Sustainability Series in partnership with the City of Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico Energy and Minerals and Natural Resources Department and the Santa Fe Green Chamber of Commerce from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays: Sept. 12, Sept. 19 and Sept. 26 at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.
The sessions are free and open to the public, but people must pre-register for the sessions to reserve a spot. Seating is limited. Here are the registration links:

The series begins on Sept.12 with “Evolving Energy Policy for a Sustainable Santa Fe,” which features panel presentations moderated by Beth Beloff, Sustainable Santa Fe Commission Chair. Panelists include: (residential solar and energy efficiency) Craig O’Hare, energy specialist, Santa Fe County; (public transportation) Erick Aune, Metropolitan Planning Organization; (housing/zoning policies and infill) Daniel Werwath, NM Interfaith Housing Corp; (evolving local food systems) Luke Spangenburg, SFCC Director of the Biofuels Program and (social equity and development) Alexandra Ladd, Housing Specialist, City of Santa Fe.
The Sept. 19 session, “Creating a more intelligent electricity system for Santa Fe,” will offer panel presentations and a community discussion about the reality and challenges of New Mexico’s current electricity grid, an introduction to smart grid and microgrid technologies, case studies from communities, and examples of how these technologies can help the Santa Fe community transition towards greater environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The session will feature the following panelists: (NM’s current grid constraints and future evolution) Pat O’Connell, Director of Planning & Resources, PNM; (the role of smart grids and microgrids) David Breecker, Director, Microgrid Systems Lab; (role of demand side management) Jack McGowan, principal, the McGowan Group; (regulatory policies for a low carbon grid) Jason Marks, lawyer, former PRC commissioner) and (legislative policies for a low carbon grid) Sarah Cottrell Propst, executive director Interwest Energy Alliance.
“Renewable energy and energy efficiency in commercial buildings,” wraps up the series on Sept. 26. The presentation and discussion targets owners and managers of commercial buildings and facilities. Panelists will talk about the economic incentives, provide case studies and will map out the technical and financial processes for building owners and managers to implement energy efficiency and solar photovoltaic projects. Participating in the panel are: (overview of smarter energy choices in buildings) Bill Eckman, SFCC trainer with New Mexico Smart Academy; (economic savings from building automation, efficient lighting and HVAC) Michael Boyer, Amersco; (economic savings from solar PV installations) Regina Wheeler, CEO, Positive Energy; (local project case studies) Rob Wing, Senior Project Manager, Sarcon Construction; (the value of collaboration: organizing 2030 districts), Rick Rennie, executive director of Albuquerque 2030 District.
