Take pre-engineering, design principles and theories, sustainable design or drafting. Learn about building materials, design and illustration software programs, and assembling a professional portfolio. The buildings on the SFCC campus provide study opportunities, from the Trades and Advanced Technology Building, with its LEED Platinum status, to the Health Sciences building, with its elegant biowall.
Building & Construction
Interested in joining or increasing your skills in a specific trade? Want to learn about green building or how to build an adobe home? SFCC can prepare you to land a good-paying job in the building industry, from building sustainable housing and communities to working as an energy inspector, plumber or HVAC technician. Classes emphasize modern green practices, sustainable building materials and passive solar adobe design. Graduates become adobe construction workers, project planners/developers or sustainability coordinators.
Custom-tailor a career in fashion. Study fashion illustration, ethnic design, textiles and pattern making. Maximize your creative abilities in a career as an apparel or accessories designer, product designer, stylist, buyer, and more. Show your designs in fashion shows in town and in the Visual Arts Gallery on campus. Participate in a yearly trip to the famous Trade Mart in New York City. SFCC is the only public college in New Mexico to offer a certificate in Fashion Design.

From cars to bridges to buildings, welding is a part of everyday life and there’s a booming demand for skilled welders in New Mexico as well as across the country. SFCC’s Welding Program trains you to work as a welder in an array of industries: pipelines, engine parts, heavy equipment, manufacturing and small- and large-scale construction. Learn welding basics, safety, quality and testing methods. Qualified, experienced instructors train students on the most current welding techniques to meet national certification requirements.
Problem solving and troubleshooting are just some of the skills that professional plumbers possess. Learn to install and upgrade plumbing systems, build new residential and commercial spaces from blueprints, and install and maintain sustainable water catchment and solar hot water systems. Whether you’re entering the field or want to upgrade your abilities, learn everything required to become a professional, from basic plumbing and pipe fitting to repair, the latest technological applications for maintenance and remodeling, and more. Plumbers are in demand, and it’s a well-paid career with opportunities for advancement or owning your own business.
Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning
Learn the tools of the trade to work on existing buildings or design new ones. Get the basics in HVAC operations, from blueprint reading to air movement, distribution, heat load calculations, and more. Stay current on the safety and technical aspects of the operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art HVAC systems. Finish a degree or certificate and get a good-paying job.
Prepare for a fascinating career, from fighting cybercrime to law enforcement supervision at the command level. Get a solid introduction to criminal investigations, criminal justice, federal law enforcement, forensic science, and criminal law and procedure. One of our students recently worked as a gaffer on the set of the “Longmire” television show; another was an actor on “Lone Ranger.”
Participate in experience-based learning in the Culinary Arts Program. Learn cooking basics in state-of-the-art commercial kitchens, how to prep and serve food in the student-run East Wing Eatery or best practices in managing a food truck.
