Welding Students represent at Skills USA

Dear Mary Eleas and Student Government Association,

Thank you for your contribution of $1,000. This enabled us to send nine students and two sponsors, Jake Lovato and Chris Felix, to compete in Skills USA in Albuquerque over the weekend of April 14, 2018.

Rosemary Sartor, Chase Foster and Derek Cortez competed in the individual welding competition. This consisted of showing competence welding in 3 processes, SMAW, FCAW and GTAW, as well cutting coupons with Oxy Acetylene.

Peter Garbett and Hernan Chavez Gomez both competed in the Sculpture portion of the event. The competitors were required to create a sculpture and to assemble notebooks documenting their progress and process during creation their sculpture. Peter received 1st place and Hernan received 2nd place.

Jesus Fierro, Russell Crandall, and Carlos Zamora, with Daniel Johnson attending as an alternate, competed in the Team Fabrication event. The Skills USA organization provided a bill of materials and an objective ahead of the event. The team was tasked with preparing a blueprint for a fire pit before the competition and fabricating the fire pit within four hours on the day of the event. They were awarded second place.

Thanks to your contribution we were able to cover registration costs, reimburse students for transportation, and provide meals.

Thank you for supporting us,

Jake Lovato, Chris Felix, Chase Foster, Derek Cortez, Rosemary Sartor, Peter Garbett, Hernan Chavez Gomez, Russell Crandall, Carlos Zamora, Jesus Fierro and Daniel Johnson
