School of Arts, Design and Media Arts Faculty and Staff Exhibition opens 4:30 p.m. Oct. 6

SFCC’s Visual Arts Gallery announces the School of Arts, Design and Media Arts Faculty and Staff Exhibition opening from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 6. Masks are required to attend the opening and/or to visit the exhibition, which continues through January 13, 2022.

Director of Art on Campus Linda Cassel said, “This exhibition will showcase a good cross-section of the tremendous artwork produced by SFCC’s Arts, Design and Media Arts talented faculty and staff. It’s really a terrific selection of artwork ranging from incredible woodworking furniture pieces to digital art. This show will give people an opportunity to see the types of art taught at the college.”

More than 35 artists will showcase some of the best examples from these School of Arts, Design and Media Arts programs: Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Film, Fine Arts, Fine Woodworking, Jewelry and Metal Arts, Media Arts, Photography, Printmaking and Book Arts and Sculpture.

SFCC has outstanding fine art, design, and media art studios. The faculty and staff are recognized artists both locally and on the national level.

The SFCC Visual Arts Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The public is welcome to visit but must wear a mask while on SFCC’s campus.

Kids Campus openings

Kids Campus at SFCC has a few openings available for our FREE Early Program! All children must have reached their third (3rd) birthday before September 1, 2021.

Kids Campus free Early Pre-K hours are Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays from 8:30-11:30 am.

We also offer a wraparound program, which includes one extra hour in the morning (7:30-8:30 a.m.) and one extra hour in the afternoon (2-3 p.m) for a monthly fee of $350. We do not offer after-care on Fridays.

The second fall session of High School Equivalency/GED training will begin on October 25. The program offers students online-based instruction in the four areas required for HSE exams – math, reading and writing, social studies and science. New Student Orientation the second fall session is October 14-21. New students, or students who have not attended the ACE program since the Summer of 2020, are required to attend all four days of new student orientation plus a 30-minute advising session, before

SFCC Library presents online Haibun Workshop with Miriam Sagan on Oct. 5, pre-register now

SFCC Library presents a free online Haibun Workshop with Miriam Sagan from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5.

Haibun is the prose and haiku combination first developed in Japan. It can be considered the original hybrid form. Participants will learn about haibun and write pieces that include timed writing, diary entries, and flash memoir. We’ll practice with placement of haiku, contrast, and metaphorical thinking.
The workshop is for writers at all levels. Background material and resources will be sent to each participant before the workshop.

Miriam Sagan is a poet and author of more than 30 books. She founded and directed the Creative Writing program at Santa Fe Community College until her retirement.

ACEN Accreditation Site Visit Oct. 6

Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) site visitors will meet with the public in an accreditation site visit for the Department of Nursing Education at Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. in Lecture Hall #216.

This meeting will be held in person by two site visitors. One site visitor will attend through a virtual online platform. The public may attend this meeting in person or virtual online platform only. Written public comments may be submitted to Lucas Gonzales at lucas.gonzales2@sfcc.edu at least 24 hours before the meeting. Public comments will be read out loud during the meeting (up to 3 minutes per comment).

Interested in adobe construction? Check out October classes

Kurt Gardella reports that interest in the adobe construction program continues. He had an enthusiastic response for his class, which began last week. He notes two more classes in the adobe construction program will be offered in October. You can register now to save a place.

ADOB 112, Adobe Wall Construction (CRN 20050) class begins October 18 and will be a blended (online and in-person) class. The class will meet on campus October 30, October 31, November 20 and November 21. Adobe contractor Ernest Aragon will lead the hands-on instruction.

ADOB 113, The Passive Solar Adobe Design class (CRN 20051) begins October 18 and is an online asynchronous class.

CHESS selects Workday to transform student experience, operations

Exhibition of student work from New Mexico School for the Arts at SFCC August 18 through September 30

An exhibition of student work from the New Mexico School of Arts will be featured in SFCC’s Main entry lobby at the college starting August 18. Poetry and images were created in collaboration with the students and the Poet Laureate, Elizabeth Jacobson. SFCC can help you pay for college with scholarships. One simple application puts you in consideration for state institutional and Foundation private scholarships. Scholarships are available for new and returning, part time and full-time students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year. Scholarships are also available for second-generation college students, Veterans, Native American students, Hispanic students and students with disabilities (must be registered with the SAS department at kayla.garcia1@sfcc.edu). Openings for Student Employment at SFCC

Student work study is a financial aid need-based program that provides student funds earned through part-time employment currently paying at a rate of $12.32 per hour.

Eligible students can work up to 20 hours per week. In addition to helping you pay for your education, the work study program helps you gain work experience, develop your skills, and build a possible pathway to future employment opportunities.

To be eligible, students must meet the following requirements:

• Must complete the 2021-2022 FAFSA and any additional requested verification items
• Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 degree-related credit hours for fall.
• Must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

“The lottery scholarship program wasn’t the only good news for college students. And the state has received $104 million in federal funds through the American Rescue Plan Act for student relief grants, Rodriguez said.

The September 24 Santa Fe New Mexican article In shifting job market, teens face increasing demand for diverse skill sets SFCC Senior Counselor Janelle Johnson provides insight based on her many years of experience counseling students at the college. The article was published in the Generation Next section of the paper and was written by Emma Meyers, a junior at Santa Fe Prep. Janelle says it was fun to be interviewed by a student reporter.

Facilities requests are streamlined with single sign-on

sj Miller, Ph.D., joins Pulitzer team at Thrive

sj Miller, Ph.D., joins Pulitzer team as a Pulitzer Fellow for Thrive Community School.

The team will develop standards-aligned units that engage their students in The 1619 Project, and other journalism and historical sources, to strengthen connections to existing curricula, practice media literacy skills, and build empathy. Projects will be shared publicly through Pulitzer Center’s lesson library and virtual professional development programs. The Pulitzer Center’s K–12 education programs and resources cultivate a more curious, informed, empathetic, and engaged public by connecting teachers and students with underreported global news stories and the journalists who cover them.

Sahaj Khalsa gave national keynote and workshop emphasizing equity and inclusion

Sahaj Khalsa, the program director of the Emergency Services Medical Institute at SFCC, recently returned from Florida, where he attended and presented at the National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Symposium. Sahaj Khalsa is a Board member of NAEMSE and has long led efforts within that organization to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in EMS education programs. He was the primary author of a NAEMSE position paper advocating that more be done to increase equity and inclusion in EMS. He also helped author one of the first research manuscripts examining disparities in pain management in EMS care of prehospital patients.

At the conference, Sahaj facilitated a workshop, ‘The Cultural Humility Summit,’ to discuss equity and inclusion in EMS. Multiple national EMS leadership organizations participated in the workshop, as did the federal agency National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), that federal agency that oversees EMS in the U.S. He also delivered a keynote presentation, ‘Educating Culturally Competent EMS Providers,’ on how we can better educate culturally aware and engaged EMS providers. NHTSA asked NAEMSE to continue collaborating with other national stakeholder organizations in causing change in the profession. The SFCC EMSI looks forward to being at the forefront of these conversations and pushing for positive change in our profession.
