SFCC Visual Arts Gallery presents SFCC's Hidden Talents
Santa Fe Community College’s Visual Arts Gallery will present a virtual online exhibition, “SFCC’s Hidden Talents,” featuring the work of five SFCC faculty members who do not teach art. The virtual exhibition is available online from Dec. 4 through Jan. 31.
Assistant Professor of English, Creative Writing, and Humanities and interim chair of Advising and Communication Emily Stern will show her mixed media work, Nursing instructor Lucas Gonzales will exhibit his watercolors and three Welding instructors Jake Lovato, Clayton Peshlakai and Estevan Ortega will share their welded sculptures.
The SFCC Campus and the college’s Visual Arts Gallery are closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. “It’s exciting to show this work by SFCC’s talented faculty, who don’t teach in our art department. The work is exciting and as diverse as they are,” said Linda Cassel, Director of SFCC’s Art on Campus. “We appreciate having the opportunity to offer the virtual exhibition. We want to keep the community engaged with Santa Fe Community College during this time.”

News and Announcements
Campus Update: Nov. 28 - All classes online, campus closed through Dec. 12
In an email to faculty staff and students on Nov. 28, President Becky Rowley, Ph,D, announced that the SFCC campus will close for two weeks, beginning Nov. 30; online classes and services to continue as normal.
The campus will remain closed through Dec. 12, the end of the fall semester. The college will close for winter break, Dec. 21 to Jan. 3, 2021.
Those currently taking part in online classes should experience no additional disruptions over the next couple weeks, while the semester concludes. Those enrolled in on-campus allied health classes or licensure trades programs should check in with their instructors for more information on these final weeks of the fall semester.
Faculty and staff who have been working on campus should check in with their supervisors on details related to their duties.
The two-week closure includes the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, and the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center, which remains closed. Kids Campus will stay open under its current limited capacity.
SFCC students win awards at AMP conference
The 2020 Virtual New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation Student Research Conference drew 225 attendees to its statewide conference on Oct. 9. New Mexico State University hosted the event that included university and community college students and faculty; high school juniors, seniors; and advisers from Upward Bound and the New Mexico Math, Engineering, Science and Achievement program from throughout the state.
Attendees could attend two of three workshops including one by SFCC’s lead Engineering faculty member Miguel Maestas on “The New Mexico Advanced Manufacturing Personal Protective Equipment Project: An Internship at Santa Fe Community College to Promote Engineering Design Knowledge and Community Service During a Pandemic.”
Students were asked to share presentations and posters of their projects. Winners of the community college competition included first place: Jeremy Sanchez, SFCC; second place: Karina Ornelas, SFCC; and third place: Sara Lanctot, former SFCC student who transferred to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Professor Will Wilson cited as one of top contemporary indigenous photographers
On Nov. 25, Buzzfeed News ran the story, “15 Contemporary Indigenous Photographers Whose Work You Should Know.”
One of the featured photographers is lead photography instructor Will Wilson. Congratulations!

SFCC Foundation Board and Governing Board Joing Meeting Dec. 2
The Governing Board will meet jointly with the Santa Fe Community College Foundation Board from 1:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. followed by the Regular Governing Board meeting at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020.
Because of the current public health emergency, this Meeting will not be held in person. Board members will attend through a virtual online platform. The public may attend this Meeting by logging onto YouTube.
Written public comments may be submitted to Audrey Lucero at audrey.lucero@sfcc.edu at least 24 hours before the meeting. Public comments will be read out loud during the meeting (up to 3 minutes per comment).

Artist and storyteller Pi Luna's talk now available online
Recently, the Library sponsored the event, “Diversity and Inclusion: Putting the pieces together, with artist and storyteller Pi Luna.” During her presentation, Luna explained how she uses diverse perspectives to assemble new stories. Like a puzzle, when the pieces come together, something new emerges – a story of hope, healing and shared humanity. Watch her process, hear her story and be prepared to be inspired. SFCC appreciates the support on the passage of Bond B (for libraries) and Bond C (for higher education). Both bonds were passed in the recent election.
Funds from Bond B will support SFCC’s library and other libraries around the state.
As a result of the passage of Bond B: $36,848 Bond B funds will help the SFCC Library help students succeed by paying for almost all of SFCC’s EBSCO research databases, will support the costs of the library’s book purchases and electronic resources.
The passage of Bond C will provide $2 million to SFCC for safer, more improved learning environments at SFCC with asset protection, including fire suppression systems, stucco, and fencing.
Throughout the state, passage of Bond C will support the educational institutions we have already invested in, giving them the resources they need to provide a safe, quality education with updated technology. Your voted in support of Go Bond C is an investment New Mexico’s future!

President Rowley participated in STEMM regional conference
On Nov. 10 President Becky Rowley, Ph.D., participated in The National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine’s virtual workshop series, “Meeting Regional STEMM Workforce needs in the Wake of Covid-19: A Virtual Workshop Series.” The program welcome and overview, as well as the summary were presented by Chair Jeff Bingaman, former United States Senator of New Mexico.
President Rowley was part of the panel, “Key services that support equitable access to workforce training.” The panelists were asked to “discuss higher education and social service strategies to connect displaced workers with training opportunities to meet local STEMM employment needs.”

SFCC has state, institutional and Foundation private scholarships available for new and returning students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year. Scholarships are available for full and part-time students in all qualified areas of study including but not limited to: Business, Early Childhood, Engineering, Nursing, Computer Studies, Culinary. There are scholarships for Native American students, Hispanic students and students with disabilities (must be registered with the SAS department), international and non-U.S. citizens.
Financial need, a cumulative and term GPA of 2.50 and enrollment in at least 6 credit hours in a degree plan are required for most scholarships.

A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a Dreamer’s Financial Aid Application (non US Citizens only) will be required to determine need. The Dreamers Financial Aid Application can be found at: https://www.sfcc.edu/offices/financial-aid/ under “FORMS”.

If you are currently enrolled in the Fall semester and experiencing financial challenges apply for some assistance from the Student Emergency Assistance Fund. Applications can be found in MYSFCC under Resources (Emergency Assistance Fund). Applications are reviewed frequently, and funds are directly awarded to your account. Please note: Funds cannot cover the cost of tuition or books.

We extend our best wishes to Dean Jenny Landen as she finishes her final months at Santa Fe Community College. She has announced that she will retire on Feb. 1, 2021.

Reminders on how to slow the spread of the virus
Human Resource Director Luis Olivas shared this message on Nov. 20:
With COVID-19 cases increasing to the highest levels we have seen since the start of the pandemic, I just want to remind everyone of a few important pieces of information.
• Public health orders require that everyone wear a mask at all times outside of your home.
• Social distance in public and avoid gatherings with people outside your household.
• If you are feeling ill, you should not come into work, and avoid any type of social setting. The College wants you to feel better before you return to work.
• If you are feeling ill get tested, and isolate yourself from others as much as possible. We need to help mitigate the health risk to others.
• Call 1-855-600-3453 for testing information and results. A new testing site at 2501 Camino Entrada at Fire Station #7 is open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
• If you do contract COVID-19, seek medical attention immediately. Notify your supervisor and human resources, these cases need to reported, we are here to support you.
Please do your part, to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Stay home, stay safe, stay healthy.
President Rowley's messaging about ERP
SFCC has joined forces with several other institutions to better support and serve our students and employees. Clovis Community College, CNM, Northern New Mexico College, SFCC (and eventually San Juan College) have come together to develop a shared system of student, human resources, and financial services. Our collective vision is to reimagine and to transform the student experience through this project.
This highly complex initiative is called Shared Services Enterprise Resource Planning (often referred to as ERP). This project has been in the works for many months and requires enormous input and collaboration on multiple levels. Interim Chief Information Officer Cori Bergen is the point person for SFCC, and her team and other staff members have been working intensely to identify all the ways we can improve our institutional systems. I want to thank everyone who has already contributed to this bold project. Your contributions will advance our practices so that our students find it easier to manage and reach their educational objectives. New Mexico Independent Community Colleges is coordinating the efforts across participating colleges with Laura Mulry serving as NMICC’s Communications Officer.

Policy Update: Accrued Annual Leave extended to Dec. 31
Last month, in response to a request from employees, the Governing Board approved a Resolution related to Policy 4-35 Leave under Policy Process F, extending the accrued annual leave deadline to December 31.
All employees are required to be familiar with and adhere to college policies, which are posted at SFCC/policies. If you have questions or would like to learn more about policies or the Shared Governance Policy Review Process, contact Policy Officer Laura J. Mulry at ext. 1776 or policy@sfcc.edu.

SFCC Virtual Commencement will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 12
Santa Fe Community College will host a Virtual Commencement Ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. While graduates won’t be on campus, they will be celebrated as their names and awards are announced during a live stream on YouTube at https://youtu.be/9jWHLEnXU90 and on SFCVTV-16 on Comcast. The virtual ceremony will salute graduates who completed either in the Summer session or Fall Semester.
President Becky Rowley, Ph.D., said, “I’m incredibly proud of the graduates for our upcoming commencement ceremony. These students either completed this summer or are finishing their requirements this semester. They have faced incredible challenges as the college had to pivot to a mainly online environment during the spring semester. I also thank our dedicated faculty and staff who’ve supported these students on their educational journey.
“We’re so happy SFCC has something to celebrate during this challenging time. Even though we can’t congratulate them in person due to safety considerations, the college invites the community to watch our virtual ceremony. These graduates have much to offer our community as they enter the workforce or continue with their higher education studies.”
In addition to the live broadcast, Santa Fe Community Television (SFCTV-16 on Comcast) will re-broadcast the Virtual Commencement Ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday, 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 16 and at 6 p.m. Saturday, December 19 on Santa Fe Community Television (SFCTV-16), Comcast Channel 16 through cable.
