SFCC and NMHU sign articulation agreement for SFCC Business and Accounting graduates that streamlines transfer to NMHU

SFCC and New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) have signed an articulation agreement so SFCC students who complete either an Associate in Arts in Accounting or Business Administration can easily transfer to NMHU to pursue either a Bachelor of Business Administration or a Bachelor of Sciences in General Business.

Barry Hubbard, Ph.D., SFCC Dean of Trades, Advanced Technologies and Sustainability & the School of Business, Professional Studies and Education said, “This articulation agreement further strengthens a long-standing relationship with NM Highlands University. By following these improved pathways, SFCC students will be able to transfer smoothly into one of NMHU’s Bachelor of Business Administration concentrations or their Bachelor of Sciences in General Business.”

Veena Parboteeah, Ph.D., NMHU Dean, School of Business, Media, and Technology said, “We are excited to strengthen our partnership through the articulation agreement, which will ensure a smooth transition for students transferring from SFCC to Highlands. By following this pathway, students will also be prepared to succeed in the programs offered by the Department of Business Administration at NMHU. With our presence at the Higher Education Center (HEC) in Santa Fe, students can get help, thanks to Mr. Robert Anaya and his team. We also plan advising sessions at the center to engage with students in Santa Fe and surrounding areas.”

The articulation agreement specifies what classes will be accepted to satisfy prerequisites. SFCC business and accounting students are strongly encouraged to work with an academic advisor to ensure that they are taking the relevant course work to attain their goals.

SFCC’s Accounting and Business programs offer classes online, so it’s convenient for people who are working to study for a degree at a time that’s most convenient for them.

Veterans Resource Center hosts VA Town Hall at 6 p.m. tonight in Jemez Rooms and online

The public is invited to the VA Town Hall at 6 p.m. Monday, March 13 in the Jemez rooms. The Town Hall will feature a presentation about the new PACT Act law that expands VA benefits and health care to Vietnam, Gulf, and Iraq/Afghanistan War veterans suffering from exposure to “Agent Orange,” burn pits, and other toxic substances while in service.

20 new “presumptive” conditions have now been added to VA’s treatment eligibility list.

Enjoy Spring Break March 20-26

SFCC will close the week of March 20-26 for Spring Break. No classes or student services will be available. SFCC’s child development center Kids Campus and the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center also will be closed. No SFCC classes or services will be available at the  Santa Fe Higher Education Center (1950 Siringo Road) that week, although the building will be open to provide access to education partner New Mexico Highlands University.

Classes and student services will resume on Monday, March 27.


NMHED Updates on Required COVID-19 Reporting

In a March 10 email, Vice President for Strategy and Organizational Effectiveness Yash Morimoto shared the following update regarding the college COVID reporting policies and best practices:

SFCC continues to monitor and follow guidance from public health officials and state and local government on mitigating and addressing exposure to COVID-19. The State of New Mexico and New Mexico Higher Education Department recently announced they will no longer require the reporting of COVID-19 cases amongst student, staff, and faculty who are on campus via the Rapid Response Submission Portal.

Our college continues to take the transmission and threat of infectious diseases seriously and we remain committed to keeping our community as safe as possible. Please note the following:

  • The college no longer requires reporting of COVID-19 positive cases to SFCC’s Contact Tracing Team.
  • However, it is very important we continue keep each other safe and follow health and safety best practices. The college continues to follow guidelines from the CDC Quarantine and Isolation Calculator, which details the following:
    • You should isolate from others when you have COVID-19
    • You should also isolate if you are sick and suspect that you have COVID-19 but do not yet have test results.
    • Ending isolation is detailed on the CDC’s Isolation and Precautions for People with COVID-19 webpage – “Ending Isolation”.
  • Positive or suspected positive individuals should coordinate closely with supervisors to make appropriate accommodations, as well as reporting for absences using regular sick leave.
    • If you are out of sick leave and contracted COVID-19, please contact the Office for Human Resources to determine if other options are available to you.
  • The college custodial staff continues its rigorous cleaning and disinfecting protocols, which includes a campus-wide daily schedule, with emphasis on bathrooms, and higher traffic and enclosed spaces.
  • Additionally, Facilities and Operations staff have made significant improvements to college ventilation and filtration systems and those systems are up and running.

The College will continue to follow best practices, community levels, and infectious disease developments.

Events highlight Solarize Santa Fe program from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 18 and 25 at ReStore

The Coalition of Sustainable Communities has reached out to SFCC to let people know about two upcoming events at the Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, 2520 Camino Entrada. The events are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 18 and 25. The program is only for those living in the City of Santa Fe. These events are tied to an incentive program that ends on April 17. Schedule Swedish-Therapeutic Massage appointments now

Appointments with massage students are available March 13 through May 13.

SFCC’s Massage Therapy program offers Swedish-Therapeutic student massage appointments. Appointments are available March 13 through May 13. Appointments can be made by visiting https://sfcc.timetap.com/.

All appointments will be in the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center. Masks are required and will be provided for everyone participating in the Student Massage Clinic.

Massage Therapy Program Lead Julianna Santillanes said, “We’re excited to offer our student Massage Therapy Clinic to the community for the third year. We have 12 students, so please check individual student schedules for availability. Hope to see you there!”

  • $25 per 60-minute Swedish-Therapeutic student massage

A variety of clothing is available at The Exchange.

Check out this Facebook video tour of “The Exchange,” SFCC’s new, free clothing closet, located next to the Campus Cupboard. Student Involvement Coordinator Mary Eleas leads the tour (with an assist from students Katia, Liam, Gabe, and Jessica) of the new family-friendly space. Kids are welcome to enjoy a small play area while you “shop” for free clothing. (There are clothing items for children from 0 to 4 years of age, as well as casual and professional clothing for adults and teens.) Students and employees, come by! Lower-level rooms 305 & 304A.

The Exchange is accepting donations during the hours mentioned above. Bring donations either to Room 304 or 305a. You can also drop them off in Room LL311. The Exchange is not accepting any more children’s clothes at this time. They are accepting children’s books and gently used toys. The Exchange is particularly seeking men’s and women’s professional clothing.

March is Women’s History Month

In March, the nation celebrates Women’s History Month. You can find a variety of teaching materials as well as links to online events at Women’s History Month (womenshistorymonth.gov) You can read how March became designated as Women’s History Month in the U.S. at the website of the National Women’s History Alliance. The National Women’s History Alliance, which spearheaded the movement for March being declared National Women’s History Month, has announced the women’s history theme for 2023, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8. The 2023 international theme is Embrace Equity and you can read more at https://www.internationalwomensday.com/ For a state-focused story, read “Writing ourselves back into the story,” from the March issue of El Palacio Magazine. The story contains background on the state roadside historical markers that highlight women.


Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) Day/SMILES Dental Day a big success at Kids Campus

On Give Kids a Smile [GKAS] day/ SMILES Dental Day at Kids Campus on February 9 the following services were provided: free dental screenings, oral health education, fluoride application, fun learning games and goodies. 75 kids were served. 15 Dental assisting students, 3 doctors and 4 dental assistants volunteered to make this a memorable event. Thank you to La Familia Dental staff for your partnership.

SFCC Wastewater Treatment Plant closure & decommissioning work begins March 6

SFCC is in its final phase to permanently close our Wastewater treatment plant and transfer our waste to Ranchland Utility regional facility. This will benefit SFCC in several ways, including reuse of treated water for irrigation purposes used in the local community, no additional capitol funding resources needed to support 36+ old infrastructure that has extended beyond its useful life, and future opportunities to repurpose land in accordance with SFCC 2021 Master Plan.

Apply by March 22 for free Environmental Technician training

Students in the EPA Environmental Technician training participated in a training exercise last year.

SFCC is accepting applications for its free Environmental Technician training program, which provides the training, skills and certifications necessary to enter a wide range of job opportunities in the environmental profession. Applications will be accepted through March 22, 2023.

The free training runs March 27 through April 28 Mondays through Fridays at the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road. This intensive 5-week training program provides certifications and skills for entry level job positions:

  • General Hazardous Waste Site Worker (HAZWOPER) (40 hours)
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Forklift Operator (8 hours)
  • OSHA Construction Standards, (30 hours)
  • Confined Space Entry and Non-Entry Rescue (8 hours)
  • Solid Waste Management (8 hours)
  • Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA) (24 hours)
  • Phase I and Phase II Environmental Assessments (16 hours)
  • Environmental Sampling (24 hours)
  • DOT HazMat (16 hours)
  • The training also will help students to become career-ready with assistance preparing résumés and practicing interviewing techniques.

Applicants must be able to attend the entire five-week program, have a high school diploma or GED, be 18 years or older, be fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus, be able to lift 30 pounds and must be unemployed, underemployed or low-income. Veterans are encouraged to apply.

The program is possible through a $200,000 grant SFCC received from the Environmental Protection Agency. The initiative will help advance economic opportunities and address environmental justice issues in underserved communities. Sponsors and partners include: Los Alamos National Laboratory, Northern New Mexico College, Eight Northern Indian Pueblo Council, U.S. EPA and AGC New Mexico.

February Blood Drive Results

Here are the results for the Santa Fe Community College Blood Drive on February 10, 2023.

The confirmed collected blood units are 28, which is 6 more units than our collection goal.

The 28 units of blood collected can save up to 3 lives per unit. This means that the 28 units of blood collected at the SFCC Blood Drive can save up to 84 lives.

SFCC presents Café Con Las Comadres, hosted by Doctora Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos, every second Wednesday of the month.  Join us for our next gathering on April 12 in the West Wing Upper-Level Student Affairs comfort area  (next to the I-Room),  from 8:30 a.m – 9:30 a.m.  This is a gender-inclusive community of friends who gather to empower the lives of one another through advocacy, navigation, support, and resources.   This is a safe shared space.

Make appointments now for free Tax-Aide assistance at the main campus

SFCC and AARP Foundation will once again offer free tax services. This year services will be in-person at the main campus from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays from January 30 through April 18. You must schedule an appointment in advance — preferably online. If someone has no computer access, they can call 505-428-1780. Leave a clear voicemail with your name and phone number. Volunteers will return calls when possible.

Please Note: To protect Tax-Aide volunteers and the taxpayers they serve, taxpayers are required to wear masks during their appointment. Volunteers will be wearing masks.

Intake and other forms may be picked up at the site during tax preparation hours or you may download these forms from the SFCC website.  Please arrive 15-30 minutes early for your appointment.

This fellowship is:

  • Part-time position (10 hours/week)
  • Paid $20,000 (June 2023 – July 2024)

This opportunity is a part of our participation in a program called FamilyU, which is offered by Generation Hope, a nonprofit organization that is working with colleges and universities to create more family-friendly campuses across the country. Students: Need childcare? Make sure you’re on the Kids Campus waitlist

When a spot comes available at the Kids Campus, students get priority placement. Kids Campus wants to support student parents and hopes that those needing childcare will get on the waitlist.

Children of degree-seeking SFCC students, SFCC employees, and full-time students at the Higher Education Center are prioritized for placement to support a two-generation philosophy of education at the college.

Visit the Kids Campus website for more information. Students receive a 10% discount on the cost of Kids Campus and N.M. Early Childhood Education and Care Development offers Child Care Assistance to income-eligible students.



SFCC Library family study room now open

If you’re a student parent, we have good news for you! The SFCC Library has opened a new family study room for students who have children. The room has a space for children with toys, books, and special-sized furniture. The room will have three computer stations and room for students working on laptops.

It is open all hours the library is open. It will be available to current students when they have their children with them. Please note: This is not daycare, students must remain with their children. The library’s restroom adjacent to the study room has been updated and is family-friendly with a changing station.

SFCC Library Spring semester hours are:
Mon. – Thurs. 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Fri. 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sat. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.


SFCC 2022-2023 scholarship application available now

SFCC can help you pay for college with scholarships. One simple application puts you in consideration for state institutional and Foundation private scholarships. Scholarships are available for new and returning, part-time and full-time students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year. Scholarships are also available for second-generation college students, Veterans, Native American students, Hispanic students and students with disabilities (must be registered with the SAS department at kayla.garcia1@sfcc.edu). SFCC offers performance-based scholarships through Contract for a Better Tomorrow (CBT).

Janelle Johnson receives ACCA Award

Janelle Johnson was awarded the 2023 Professional Leadership award from the American College Counseling Association at the recent national conference held in Savannah, GA last week. The conference was attended by 350+ counseling professionals from universities and colleges around the country.

Janelle says:
“It was a complete surprise and I am humbled to have been nominated by my peer counseling professionals for the award. The inscription reads “For your continued dedication and exemplary service to the field of college counseling.”

Defensive driving certification class May 18

As per policy 5-10, everyone is required to take a Defensive Driving Class prior to operating SFCC vehicles.

The next Defensive Driving Class has been scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday May 18 in Health and Sciences room 487. Please arrive promptly or the class will end late. To receive full credit for the class, you must arrive promptly at 8:00a.m. and attend the full 4-5 hours.

SFCC Director of Teacher Education Dawn Wink, Ph.D., recently shared on her blog Dew Drops, “I was beyond grateful to share ideas of Decolonizing Multilingual Education Research Through Wildness, Beauty, Imagination, Lilyology, and Scholarly Personal Narrative with the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Conference 2023.

Travel Authorization & Expense Reports in Workday

Here are a few reminders regarding Travel in Workday:

  1. Spend authorizations must be submitted and approved before any travel-related purchases are made.
  2. After travel is completed, an expense report must be submitted with the following: 
    • Note the spend authorization number. 
    • Include all procurement card (P-Card) transactions.

If an expense needs to be reassigned to the traveler, please contact the Purchasing Office. 

  1. Once the expense report is complete (contains ALL expenses), check the box to close out the spend authorization. This is the only way to release any remaining travel funds from encumbrance back into the budget. 
  2. All spend authorizations in draft form should be cancelled if no longer needed. 
  3. Do not use the itemization functionality unless you need to split a transaction between multiple funding sources (ex. Cost centers / grants).

2022 W-2s available in Legacy Employee Services

W-2s have been issued and are available to all employees in Banner Self-Service. Paper forms for those not consenting to electronic delivery were mailed on Jan 26th.  They are not available for pick-up.

Instructions to print your W-2:

  • In MySFCC, use the Employee drop down menu on the left to click on Legacy Employee Services.  This takes you to Banner Self-Service.
  • Click on Tax Forms, W-2 Wage and Tax Statement and choose Tax Year 2022.

Message about preferred names

The following message was shared on Friday, February 3:

Dear Faculty,

While the college has always supported our students, we now have another technological opportunity to provide an empowering, safe, and nondiscriminatory educational and work environment.  Beginning on Monday February 6, students will be able update their preferred name in Self Service Banner (SSB9).

The student’s legal name will be on your class roster and their preferred name, if applicable, will appear in parenthesis.  For example, Gonzales, Bernadette (Charmaine).  For legal purposes, the student’s legal name will still appear on all formal documents such as Financial Aid information, 1098-T’s and transcripts.

Artist and long-time SFCC art instructor Felix Voltsinger

Santa Fe Community College Visual Arts Gallery presents the art exhibition, “Land, Space and Color – An Exhibit of Paintings by Felix Voltsinger,” which opens with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 16 and runs through Thursday, April 19 in the gallery at 6401 Richards Avenue. The exhibition features the artwork of Russian-born artist and School of Arts and Design faculty member Felix Voltsinger. He will give a Gallery Talk about his work and his approach to painting at 12:30 p.m. on Friday March 31, in the gallery.

Voltsinger, an accomplished plein-air artist, has taught painting and drawing to SFCC students every semester since 2008. He plans to retire from teaching at the end of this semester after a long and successful career.

Laura Rosenfeld, Program Head for drawing, painting and foundations at SFCC states, “This exhibition celebrates a valued faculty member and an approach to painting that demands great skill as well as a determined spirit in order to feel as well as see and interpret the land.”

This exhibition of paintings and detailed drawings is the result of many years painting in a traditional plein-air mode. Voltsinger loves nature and delights in taking extended camping trips to work in remote locations. While he often creates pieces in one session, he also returns to the same place at the same time of day to continue to develop a piece. He uses his sketches, memory, and imagination to create larger works in the studio, eschewing the use of photographic reference. Whether at the easel, by the campfire, or sitting on the riverbank with a cup of tea, he constantly strives to be a better observer, opening himself to the richness and complexity of nature and deepening his understanding of the world around him.

Recording: ChatGPT’s Implications for Higher Ed

By now you’ve probably heard of ChatGPT, the free AI platform that can “write” full-length, college-level essays on virtually any topic in seconds. From academic integrity to assessment, ChatGPT’s impact on higher education will be far-ranging. This session includes a demo of how ChatGPT works, implications for higher education and how other colleges and universities are responding. This session was led by SFCC librarians.

Work has begun on connector roads to SFCC

Work expected to continue until fall

The Santa Fe New Mexican reported in the Jan. 25 story, “County hopes construction of connector roads leads to growth south of city,” that “Santa Fe County is starting the construction phase of a more than $20 million infrastructure project 20 years in the making, which aims to provide better access to Santa Fe Community College and accommodate future growth south of the city. …

“The “northeast connector” involves construction of roadway and two roundabout intersections between Dinosaur Trail and Rabbit Road, giving drivers a direct route between them. Currently, drivers traveling west from Rabbit Road are required to drive through the Oshara Village subdivision to reach Dinosaur Trail or busy Richards Avenue.

“The “southeast connector” will serve as an alternate route from Rabbit Road to Avenida del Sur to reduce traffic congestion on Richards Avenue. This route also will provide secondary emergency access to the community college, according to the county.”

The Early Childhood Center of Excellence (ECCOE) offers a free early childhood speaker series featuring national and New Mexico experts focused on equity and social justice in early childhood teacher preparation. This series is for higher education faculty and anyone interested in bringing equity to their work with young children and families. This free virtual series runs from September 2022 through May 2023. Registration is open now!

Santa Fe Reporter story explains on-demand buses that serve SFCC community

The Santa Fe Reporter story on Nov. 9 by Andy Lyman, “In demand-drivers mean in-demand buses,” featured Paul Volmer, an SFCC film student, as well as Director of Student Engagement and Recruitment Marcos Maez, who also serves on the City Transit Advisory Board. Route 21 (which comes to the college) is currently an on-demand route, which means riders must contact dispatchers when they need a ride on the bus. (It is not currently operating on a regular bus schedule and is only available on weekdays.) Also, other routes that feed into that route are also impacted. The story states, “For on-demand service on Santa Fe Trails routes 5, 6, 21, 22 and the Museum Hill route on weekdays and weekends as well as Route 24 and 26 on weekends, contact dispatchers at (505) 955-2001.” Keep that number handy if you need to use the bus. Bike riders might find it necessary to take the bus on days there is snow and ice. For more information visit the Santa Fe Trails site.

To access Bookings, log in to MySFCC, look under Schedule an Appointment, and click on the pink button labeled Campus Cupboard (Online). You can access the reservation and delivery option 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Students, staff, and faculty are all welcome to visit the Campus Cupboard weekly for free groceries and other household items that may be available. Personal hygiene (menstrual) products are available from Free Flow NM.
