Interested in issues around climate change and energy issues? Or do you wonder how our state can reach Net Zero emissions by 2050 and the role energy must play in this and in holding global warming to 1.5 degrees?
SFCC will host a free Virtual Distributed Energy Summit 2022 for the NM EPSCoR SMART Grid Center with a focus on Net Zero on Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24. While free, registration is required by 5 p.m. Friday, June 17 at Distributed Energy Summit 2022 (Virtual) | New Mexico EPSCoR (nmepscor.org). Registrants will receive a link to participate.

A special aspect of the summit is the option of free, in-person tours between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 24 of SFCC’s Smart and Microgrid Training Center, battery energy storage system, solar photovoltaic generation array and controlled agriculture environment greenhouses (registration required).

Seven PROTEC participants hired for film
Film professor Milton Riess shared the exciting news from Stagecoach Foundation that seven students who recently went through February/March PROTEC production assistant training have been hired to work on the film, “Cursed.”

On Saturday, May 14 the college held its first in-person commencement ceremony since fall 2019. The livestreamed ceremony was a festive and heartfelt affair, highlighted by keynotes speeches from Monica Leyba, Chief Nurse Executive of CHRISTUS St. Vincent Medical Regional Center, and student speaker Maria “Lourdes” Estrada, 51, who overcame many obstacles to earn her Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education.
This spring, approximately 335 SFCC graduates earned 371 awards (236 certificates and 135 associate degrees). 34 of these students received more than one award. Complete grad stats

ESL Program hosts Raptor Center birds June 9 at 10 a.m.
The ESL Program will be hosting a visit by the Santa Fe Raptor Center on June 9th from 10 to noon. The Raptor Center will be bringing one or two birds. They will show the bird(s) and have a question-and-answer session in the main courtyard.
This is an informal event, all are welcome to stop in and see the birds!

SFCC will observe Juneteenth on Monday, June 20
On May 25, President Rowley issued the following statement regarding Juneteenth:
Juneteenth National Independence Day is the oldest known celebration of the formal abolishment of slavery in the United States. In 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, officially making June 19 a federal holiday.
I am pleased to announce that SFCC will honor this day by adding it as a permanent paid holiday for eligible employees. Beginning this year, and thereafter, the college will close in recognition of this important event.
This year, June 19 is a Sunday. Therefore, the college will close on Monday, June 20 to observe Juneteenth. SFCC Main Campus, Kids Campus, and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center will be closed. No classes or student services will be available. Flags will be lowered to half-staff Saturday, June 18, through Monday, June 20, in commemoration.
If you are comfortable being around others in an open air environment, Earthseed Black Arts Alliance is presenting “Love and Happiness Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration,” a free concert and community gathering on the Santa Fe Plaza on Sunday evening, June 19.
SFCC students participated in SF Literary Festival
SFCC student Marcelina (Marcy) Gallegos reads some deeply moving poetry at the Santa Fe Literary Festival.
Creative writing faculty Kate McCahill and Shuli Lamden coordinated with Clare Hertel, co-founder of the Santa Fe Literary Festival, to secure 16 free all-access passes for students, an exclusive lunch for eight with a festival author, and a place on the community stage for some SFCC poets and creative writing students and Terry Wilson, one of SFCC’s creative writing faculty. The passes alone were valued at thousands of dollars.
Terry Wilson opened up the mid-Saturday (May 21) free, public reading in the Santa Fe Convention Center Courtyard. Terry read a piece called “Housemother,” a reflection written from when she worked at Ingleside Home for Girls in 1970 in Buffalo when she was quite young. (It was a Home for Unwed Mothers.) Terry said the work was pretty relevant since Margaret Atwood had spoken a few hours earlier about “Handmaids’ Tale.

Summer update: No masks or vaccine requirements
In an email to the campus community on May 16, SFCC President Becky Rowley thanked the campus community for its dedication and announced the end of both the vaccination and mask requirements.
Congratulations to SFCC High School Equivalency graduates
The college honored SFCC High School Equivalency graduates during a Tuesday ceremony in the Fitness Center. Sixty-nine students successfully completed their HSE exams in the Adult Education, Academic and Career Education (ACE) Program and received a High School Equivalency Certificate. Guests included keynote speaker Eric Vasquez (One Stop Operator at Northern Area Local Workforce Development Board); Ericka Van Eckhoutte (WIOA Director of Adult/Dislocated Worker for Northern New Mexico); as well as student speakers Josephine (Josie) Valdez, Norma Lizbeth Martinez Jaramillo, and Jeremiah Delgado.

Chris Quintana of USA Today interviewed Vice President for Strategy and Organizational Effectiveness Yash Marimoto, Financial Aid Program Director Kelly Durbin and Associate Vice President of Student Success Thomasinia Ortiz-Gallegos about how SFCC has worked to reduce debt for our students for his 05/22/2022 story, “Free college or federal student loans? These alternatives could help solve student debt crisis.”

The national story begins, “As President Joe Biden mulls the possibility of widespread student loan forgiveness, a community college in New Mexico may offer insight to prevent the need for future mass cancelation.
Just 1% of the college’s student body borrows to pay for college, according to federal data, though it wasn’t always that way.
Leaders at the Santa Fe Community College say, among other measures, they’ve stopped automatically offering loans to students and require students to take a workshop before borrowing. That, along with support from state scholarships directed at local students and federal grants, have been key in reducing debt loads for students. …”

Katie Besser Awards, Richard Bradford Memorial Scholarship Winner, and Accolades
Santa Fe Community College’s emerging writers, photographers and mixed media artists were recognized during the Katie Besser Awards celebration hosted online by the SFCC Library on May 4. The awards were named for the late Katie Besser in recognition of her love of literature and creative writing. The event celebrated students’ creative expression through writing, photography and media arts. Writers representing SFCC’s diverse community read from their winning works.
The twelfth annual winner of Santa Fe Community College Foundation’s Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship was announced at the conclusion of the awards celebration. Christine Schwatken will receive the $1,000 scholarship. Named for the author of the 1968 classic Red Sky at Morning, the scholarship was initiated by author Michael McGarrity, the late arts advocate Charmay Allred and former Santa Fe city councilwoman Rebecca Wurzburger.

Invitation to make advanced art this summer and fall!
Advanced Projects Book as Sculpture will be an ONLINE choice for book making and learning about materials for art with Art and Design teacher, Marci Easterbrook. The class meets synchronously on Monday and Wednesday mornings in summer, and in fall, just on Thursday mornings.
ARTS 2115 D1 uses your art work, including photos, watercolors and drawings for book/sculpture and teaches new techniques on paper, fabric, wood, clay and metal for surface design and bindings that are exciting and creative.

UNM/SFCC Health Ambassadors application opens April 1
The UNM – SFCC HC Ambassadors Program will begin taking applications for Fall 2022 SFCC students who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers. This federally funded program provides opportunities for students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to explore healthcare options while also offering tutoring support to be successful in college. The deadline for the application process is September 15, 2022.

Congratulations to SFCC algae finalist teams!
Stephen Gomez, Ph.D. shared the exciting news that three teams from the SFCC algae program are finalists in a national competition! Congratulations to all of the students and a special shout out to Stephen Gomez, Ph.D., who has taken such a strong leadership role in SFCC’s algae program to garner such strong national recognition.
The teams include:
- The Clean Water Cultivators
- Toxic Ambrosia Salad
- Underground Ocean Farmers
The finalist teams will be continuing their research through next year. We wish them luck, but we know it’s their hard work that will help them win. Yes, there’s big prize money involved!
Here’s what Dr. Gomez shared, “There were 65 teams in the competition and only 15 were advanced to be finalists.
SFCC has three of the 15 slots. Our students will be competing with U.C. Berkeley, Purdue, Colorado State University, Arizona State University, University of Texas, and University of Puerto Rico.”
We note SFCC only had three teams and all three are finalists!

Marcos Maez completes MBA at NM Highlands with concentration in Marketing
Congratulations to Director of Recruitment & Dual Credit Marcos Maez!
He completed his MBA with a concentration in Marketing from New Mexico Highlands University.
He will be graduating with a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Due to the fires in the Las Vegas area, the NMHU graduation has been postponed.
Marcos shared, “When the graduation is rescheduled, I have been given the honor by the NMHU School of Business, Media, and Technology to serve as the flagbearer for the commencement ceremony. I will be leading all graduates from my respective school into the gymnasium. It is truly one of the great honors of my life.”
“I am grateful to my remarkable colleagues at SFCC for their encouragement and support. As a first generation Hispanic male college student, I sincerely hope that my accomplishment can inspire other first generation students in my community. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Amanda Hatherly at the Santa Fe Children's Museum
SFCC’s Amanda Hatherly was a special guest facilitator in building mini Corsi-Rosenthal boxes at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum Saturday, May 21!
Q: What is a Corsi–Rosenthal Box?
A: Also called a Corsi–Rosenthal Cube, a Corsi-Rosenthal Box is a design for a do-it-yourself air purifier.
During this Science Saturday program, children learned about air quality/air filtration and how it relates to health and safety during COVID and the fires. Also about energy/insulation with fun interactive experiments with lightbulbs and infrared cameras.
Amanda Hatherly received special award
Amanda Hatherly was recognized for her contributions to the Santa Fe Water Efficiency Partnership Team. The presenter stated:
“The City of Santa Fe and the NGWS planning committee would like to present a special award to Amanda Hatherly who is the Director of the EnergySmart Academy at the SFCC.
Amanda is a very special and hard working individual. Not only did she help us create an award winning educational program through the SFCC but she also linked us with Lane Community College and an NSF grant to help us expand the training online so that anyone in the nation could take advantage of it. She was also the person who engaged our City Council to designate Santa Fe as a Bee City, USA and is a gamechanger in this community. Someone who makes things happen.
We are all so grateful and appreciative of your years of work with the Santa Fe Water Efficiency Partnership Team in building an award winning program and wish you the most happiness in your future endeavors.”

Here is what Kristen wrote for Gayle:
I — backed by six other staff in the Adult Education Department — nominate Gayle Torres for the WOW award in recognition of her outstanding leadership, knowledge, and commitment demonstrated consistently here for over 25 years. She is retiring in April and is well-deserving of this recognition. Despite at times challenging circumstances, Gayle has served as a steady, devoted, and level-headed leader in the AE department, and we just couldn’t have functioned without her. She shares her detailed knowledge of the adult education system with her peers; trains and supports new staff members; responds promptly to data requests; provides guidance in identifying performance goals for all AE programs; and responds to a wide range of student needs always with patience and kindness. She is unfailingly friendly in her interactions with others and maintains a high level of integrity in all that she does. The Adult Education community will truly miss her and the expertise that she brings to our field. Thank you, Gayle!

Suburu representatives to talk about opportunities in the industry
Tour SFCC’s Gold LEED certified Automotive Technologies Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear presentations about industry career opportunities at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. by Subaru regional representative Mitchell Mays, as well as Honda/Suburu of Santa Fe Director of Operations Ted Nime and General Manager Jason Bass. Members of SFCC’s Financial Aid office will answer questions about the Opportunity Scholarship and other financial aid at 11:30 and 1:30 p.m.
Director of SFCC’s Automotive Technologies program Julia Furry said, “There’s a huge demand for certified automotive technicians. Our speakers will also be glad to answer questions about other career opportunities in the auto industry such as accounting, sales and marketing.”

SFCC’s ATC supports students with the latest in computerized diagnostic equipment and electric vehicle maintenance capabilities. The 17,500 square foot building is equipped with classrooms and spaces that emulate the automotive customer service experience of an auto dealership and educational spaces which include a large shop space with lifts, three specialized labs: chassis/suspension, electric and EV/hybrid engine/power train, a computer/trainer classroom, offices, and support spaces.
The Automotive Technologies Program is designed to provide students with entry-level employment as automotive technicians. When students complete the program, they will earn an A.A.S. in Automotive Technologies along with earning certificates in seven competency areas: Automotive Engine Repair, Auto Maintenance and Light Truck Repair, Automatic Transmission Transaxle, Automotive Heating and Air Conditioning, Brakes, Manual Transmission and Drive Train, and Steering and Suspension. The program provides students with the background and knowledge to earn Automotive Service Excellence certifications.
