SFCC celebrates Pride Month, getting new flag
SFCC displayed the Pride flag (rainbow colors) along with the U.S. flag, the New Mexico State flag and the Transgender Flag (pink, white and light blue) in recognition of Pride Month until the beginning of last week when it was torn in the wind. SFCC recognizes and celebrates Pride Month.
A new flag has been ordered. While we’re sad the flag was torn in the wind, it was an opportunity to update it to a more inclusive flag as suggested by PDAC co-chairs Shalimar Krebs and sj Miller, Ph.D. At press time, it was on order. Read more about the new flag design here.
June 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of annual Pride traditions. Visit Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance’s web page for information about 2022 Santa Fe events. You’ll also see numerous resources. Alumna Cindy Nava gets Presidential appointment to HUD
Cindy Nava, an SFCC alumna, is currently received a presidential appointment to serve with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She most recently was the executive director of Transform Education New Mexico. She was SFCC’s 2017 keynote commencement speaker. Here’s more about her appointment from a KOAT story: Cindy Nava said, “This appointment is bittersweet because of the progress that Transform Education NM has made in realizing equity for all public school students in New Mexico,” Nava said. “As an English language learner myself, and a former undocumented immigrant, I was able to deeply relate and see myself in the students we served.”
Nava will become the first former recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to receive a presidential appointment. DACA allows for children brought to the United States to eventually obtain citizenship. Ten years ago, President Barack Obama established DACA.
Her work with TENM has helped to make sure all New Mexican children are getting sufficient educational assistance and guidance.
“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to serve my country in this capacity,” Nava said. “HUD is an agency responsible for creating and enacting policy that directly impacts the communities I represent and which have played fundamental roles in my success.”

Tour SFCC’s Gold LEED certified Automotive Technologies Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear presentations about industry career opportunities at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. by Subaru regional representative Mitchell Mays, as well as Honda/Suburu of Santa Fe Director of Operations Ted Nime and General Manager Jason Bass. Members of SFCC’s Financial Aid office will answer questions about the Opportunity Scholarship and other financial aid at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Director of SFCC’s Automotive Technologies program Julia Furry said, “There’s a huge demand for certified automotive technicians. Our speakers will also be glad to answer questions about other career opportunities in the auto industry such as accounting, sales and marketing.”

ESL, Kids Campus enjoyed visit with SF Raptor Center
Amy Loyd confirmed for U.S. Education Dept. post
The Senate on June 8 confirmed Amy Loyd, a former SFCC student, as the U.S. Education Department’s (ED) assistant secretary for career, technical and adult education.
Loyd has served as a senior advisor at ED as she awaited her confirmation. She was nominated to lead ED’s Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) in August 2021. Previously, she was acting assistant secretary and deputy assistant secretary of policy and strategic initiatives in OCTAE from April 2021 to August.
Prior to that, Loyd — who attended SFCC and Northern New Mexico College — was a vice president at Jobs for the Future for 10 years, where she led the organization’s programs in college and career pathways, workforce development with a focus on economic advancement, state and federal policy and in diversity, equity and inclusion.
She previously was director of education at the Cook Inlet Tribal Council in Alaska, leading a network of schools and programs providing comprehensive, culturally responsive education, training and wraparound services to the Alaska Native and Native American communities. Loyd also led the startup of a prisoner re-entry residential education and workforce development social enterprise and was a high school math teacher and family advocate.

Overall success rate of Dual Credit students improves
Marcos Maez, Director of Student Dual Credit, Engagement & Recruitment shared, “At the conclusion of the Spring 2022 semester, the overall success rate (completion of an SFCC class with a grade of C or higher) of our Dual Credit student population was 89%! That is a four percent increase from Spring 2021. This is an incredible accomplishment and a reminder of the tremendously important role our Dual Credit students have as part of our SFCC family. We applaud and thank the more than 20 partner high schools who choose to work with us each semester.”

Invitation to make advanced art this fall!
Advanced Projects Book as Sculpture will be an ONLINE choice for book making and learning about materials for art with Art and Design teacher, Marci Easterbrook. The class meets synchronously in the fall on Thursday mornings.
ARTS 2115 D1 uses your art work, including photos, watercolors and drawings for book/sculpture and teaches new techniques on paper, fabric, wood, clay and metal for surface design and bindings that are exciting and creative.

Student Work Study is a financial aid need-based program that provides student funds earned through part-time employment. Eligible students can work up to 20 hours per week and work is scheduled around your school schedule. Please note payment for student workers is $12 an hour, but will increase to $15 an hour on July 1!
To be eligible, students must meet the following requirements:
- Completed the 2021-2022 and 2022-2022 FAFSA
- Enrolled now and in at least 3-degree related credit hours for the summer semester

Director of SFCC’s Center for Book Art and Printmaking Patricia Pearce and Director of Art on Campus Linda Cassel are coordinating with the owners to have a series of 2-dimensional art exhibitions by SFCC art students and instructors. Molly and Armando Martinez took over the business after working for the previous owners. The two met in an SFCC English class!
Student Daniel Peaslee selected for Stowe Story Labs Screenwriting Training
The New Mexico Film Office and Stowe Story Labs announced that ten projects were chosen for the first New Voices • New Mexico screenwriting training program for emerging New Mexican screenwriters.
SFCC Film student Daniel Peaslee was one of those selected. Congratulations Daniel! We look forward to hearing about the development of your screenplay.

Congratulations to SFCC algae finalist teams!
Stephen Gomez, Ph.D. shared the exciting news that three teams from the SFCC algae program are finalists in a national competition! Congratulations to all of the students and a special shout out to Stephen Gomez, Ph.D., who has taken such a strong leadership role in SFCC’s algae program to garner such strong national recognition.
The teams include:
- The Clean Water Cultivators
- Toxic Ambrosia Salad
- Underground Ocean Farmers
The finalist teams will be continuing their research through next year. We wish them luck, but we know it’s their hard work that will help them win. Yes, there’s big prize money involved!
Here’s what Dr. Gomez shared, “There were 65 teams in the competition and only 15 were advanced to be finalists.
SFCC has three of the 15 slots. Our students will be competing with U.C. Berkeley, Purdue, Colorado State University, Arizona State University, University of Texas, and University of Puerto Rico.”
We note SFCC only had three teams and all three are finalists!

Scholarships are available for new and returning, part time and full-time students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year. Marcos Maez completes MBA at NM Highlands with concentration in Marketing
Congratulations to Director of Recruitment & Dual Credit Marcos Maez!
He completed his MBA with a concentration in Marketing from New Mexico Highlands University.
He will be graduating with a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Due to the fires in the Las Vegas area, the NMHU graduation has been postponed.
Marcos shared, “When the graduation is rescheduled, I have been given the honor by the NMHU School of Business, Media, and Technology to serve as the flagbearer for the commencement ceremony. I will be leading all graduates from my respective school into the gymnasium. It is truly one of the great honors of my life.”
“I am grateful to my remarkable colleagues at SFCC for their encouragement and support. As a first generation Hispanic male college student, I sincerely hope that my accomplishment can inspire other first generation students in my community. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Amanda Hatherly received special award
Amanda Hatherly was recognized for her contributions to the Santa Fe Water Efficiency Partnership Team. The presenter stated:
“The City of Santa Fe and the NGWS planning committee would like to present a special award to Amanda Hatherly who is the Director of the EnergySmart Academy at the SFCC. Amanda is a very special and hard working individual. Not only did she help us create an award winning educational program through the SFCC but she also linked us with Lane Community College and an NSF grant to help us expand the training online so that anyone in the nation could take advantage of it. She was also the person who engaged our City Council to designate Santa Fe as a Bee City, USA and is a gamechanger in this community. Someone who makes things happen. We are all so grateful and appreciative of your years of work with the Santa Fe Water Efficiency Partnership Team in building an award winning program and wish you the most happiness in your future endeavors.”

UNM/SFCC Health Ambassadors open April 1 – September 15
The UNM – SFCC HC Ambassadors Program will begin taking applications for Fall 2022 SFCC students who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers. This federally funded program provides opportunities for students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to explore healthcare options while also offering tutoring support to be successful in college. The deadline for the application process is September 15, 2022.
