New rules to allow some education retirees to return to education
New rules are in place that will allow some education retirees to return to work. For an explanation of the rules, see: 2022 Return to Work Guidance | NM Educational Retirement Board (nmerb.org).
A 6/29/2022 story in the Santa Fe New Mexican, “Some retired N.M. teachers eager to get back in classroom under new law,” shared some of the details. In the article, Dean Terri Tewart was quoted about how the ruling might help SFCC fill some positions at SFCC.

The Santa Fe Coffee Bar is coming to campus
The Santa Fe Coffee Bar, a locally owned and operated Santa Fe business will begin providing numerous drinks, breakfast, deli, and pastry food items in the coffee shop location in the campus center. The Santa Fe Coffee Bar will be selling locally distributed Iconik Coffee Roasters products and will focus on obtaining goods from local New Mexico distributors. The Santa Fe Coffee Bar plans to open in July.
Overall success rate of Dual Credit students improves
Marcos Maez, Director of Student Dual Credit, Engagement & Recruitment shared, “At the conclusion of the Spring 2022 semester, the overall success rate (completion of an SFCC class with a grade of C or higher) of our Dual Credit student population was 89%! That is a four percent increase from Spring 2021. This is an incredible accomplishment and a reminder of the tremendously important role our Dual Credit students have as part of our SFCC family. We applaud and thank the more than 20 partner high schools who choose to work with us each semester.”

Invitation to make advanced art this fall!
Advanced Projects Book as Sculpture will be an ONLINE choice for book making and learning about materials for art with Art and Design teacher, Marci Easterbrook. The class meets synchronously in the fall on Thursday mornings.
ARTS 2115 D1 uses your art work, including photos, watercolors and drawings for book/sculpture and teaches new techniques on paper, fabric, wood, clay and metal for surface design and bindings that are exciting and creative.

Student Work Study is a financial aid need-based program that provides student funds earned through part-time employment. Eligible students can work up to 20 hours per week and work is scheduled around your school schedule. Please note payment for student workers is $15 an hour beginning on July 1!
To be eligible, students must meet the following requirements:
- Completed the 2021-2022 and 2022-2022 FAFSA
- Enrolled now and have at least 3-degree related credit hours for the summer semester and 6 credit hours for fall.

New UAchieve tools coming soon to replace Schedule Builder
UAchieve Planner and Schedmule will soon be added to the UAchieve toolset available in MySFCC. The new tools will provide schedule planning and schedule building tools for students, replacing Schedule Builder. Contact Registrar Bernadette Gonzales for more information.

Director of SFCC’s Center for Book Art and Printmaking Patricia Pearce and Director of Art on Campus Linda Cassel are coordinating with the owners to have a series of 2-dimensional art exhibitions by SFCC art students and instructors. Molly and Armando Martinez took over the business after working for the previous owners. The two met in an SFCC English class!
Student Daniel Peaslee selected for Stowe Story Labs Screenwriting Training
The New Mexico Film Office and Stowe Story Labs announced that ten projects were chosen for the first New Voices • New Mexico screenwriting training program for emerging New Mexican screenwriters.
SFCC Film student Daniel Peaslee was one of those selected. Congratulations Daniel! We look forward to hearing about the development of your screenplay.

Congratulations to SFCC algae finalist teams!
Stephen Gomez, Ph.D. shared the exciting news that three teams from the SFCC algae program are finalists in a national competition! Congratulations to all of the students and a special shout out to Stephen Gomez, Ph.D., who has taken such a strong leadership role in SFCC’s algae program to garner such strong national recognition.
The teams include:
- The Clean Water Cultivators
- Toxic Ambrosia Salad
- Underground Ocean Farmers
The finalist teams will be continuing their research through next year. We wish them luck, but we know it’s their hard work that will help them win. Yes, there’s big prize money involved!
Here’s what Dr. Gomez shared, “There were 65 teams in the competition and only 15 were advanced to be finalists.
SFCC has three of the 15 slots. Our students will be competing with U.C. Berkeley, Purdue, Colorado State University, Arizona State University, University of Texas, and University of Puerto Rico.”
We note SFCC only had three teams and all three are finalists!

Criminal Justice instructor serves veterans’ families
Joseph Villegas, an adjunct instructor who teaches multiple courses in SFCC’s Criminal Justice program, volunteers in an important way to assist veterans’ families. He volunteers as the chaplain at military funerals: when no clergy is available, when the person is not affiliated with a religious organization or if the deceased’s family does not have the means to pay for a chaplain.
For 34 years Villegas has served as a chaplain in the military and for the state. Since 2015, he has served as the New Mexico State Police and FBI Chaplain – Albuquerque Division. It’s not an easy job. He often is called on scene for homicides, sudden child deaths and violent crimes.
Off campus, Joseph Villegas, is affectionately called Chappy José. Most police officers, EMTs and firefighters in the region know him by name, since he responds to calls when one is either injured or killed. He’s there for the injured or dying person. His support extends to offering comfort to their families and colleagues.
Many in our state have seen his strong presence at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, as he serves in his volunteer role as chaplain at the services for those being committed to their final resting place. “That cemetery is the gateway to Northern New Mexico and important hub for veterans of the northern part of the state. I am honored to dignify the death of our veterans whether they are faith-based or not. I never charge for that service,” Villegas explains. He said, “I think with the exception of Arlington National Cemetery, I am the only chaplain offering free services at a national veterans cemetery.”
The Marine veteran also willingly steps up to serve as needed. Recently, at one graveside service there was no one to play taps. He went and got his trumpet and played taps. Some days, he’s at two or three services.
In his role at SFCC, he loves teaching. He also enjoys his interactions with Interim Veterans Resource Coordinator Krystal Patton and history professor Steve Martinez, who leads the SFCC Veteran’s Legacy Program. “I tell everyone that SFCC is a gem for veterans and everybody.”
Counselors Janelle Johnson and Rosalie Lipfert present at ACCA Summer Symposium
SFCC counselors, Janelle Johnson, LPCC and Rosalie Lipfert, LCSW were asked to present at the virtual American College Counseling Association, ACCA Summer Symposium on June 17, 2022. Their presentation “Lessons Learned from the Pandemic” was well received with over 50 counselors from the U.S. and Canada in attendance.
Dr. sj Miller gave keynote for Global Citizenship Foundation online event: Celebrating Gender Inclusive Learning Spaces
Dr. sj Miller gave a keynote for International UNESCO’s Global Citizenship Foundation in celebration of PRIDE on June 30.
The title of the talk was: Why Gender Identity Justice Matters for Everyone.

The UNM – SFCC HC Ambassadors Program will begin taking applications for Fall 2022 SFCC students who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers. This federally funded program provides opportunities for students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to explore healthcare options while also offering tutoring support to be successful in college. The deadline for the application process is September 15, 2022.
