U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee tour TATC

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee toured Santa Fe Community College’s Trades and Advanced Technology Center with Interim President Cecilia Cervantes, Ph.D. on Friday, July 27. Rep. Lujan Grisham said, “SFCC, as you can see, is leading in the spaces of clean energy, technology and advanced sciences.” Gov. Inslee was in Santa Fe attending the National Governors Association 2018 Summer Meeting.

Fall is just around the corner. Welcome Week takes place Aug. 9 through 17. The kick-off convocation assembly takes place on Monday, Aug. 13 from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. Please note, services will be limited during this time. View the full agenda.

Testing Center renovation begins next month

The Testing Center (Room 611) renovations are scheduled to begin during the week of August 27-31, and are scheduled to take about a month. Throughout the renovation period, the Testing Center will administer walk-in tests such as Accuplacer and class make-up tests, HiSET and CLEP in Room 611A. There may be some construction noise and dust, but the center will have earplugs for you!

During renovations, however, the Testing Center will not be able to offer Pearson Vue tests (those include GED, NES and EMT tests) for about four weeks. When the renovated Testing Center reopens in October, it will offer enhanced capabilities, including additional seating and new computers in room 611C. If you have any further questions about testing during the renovation period, contact Testing Center Manager Ellen Joy Roth at ellen.roth@sfcc.edu or 428-1910.

ESL Orientations begin Aug. 6

Santa Fe Community College will offer English as a Second Language courses to any adult who wants to learn English. New students must attend an orientation session prior to registration. Orientation and Registration sessions will all take place at the Santa Fe Community College, Adult Education Department:

Monday, August 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, August 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monday, August 13, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tuesday, August 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.

Classes begin Aug. 20, 21, 27 or 28, depending on the location. Space is limited. For more information, call 505-428-1356

East Wing Garden volunteers needed

Join us for a community work day in the East Wing Garden Friday, July 27 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed for garden work projects including weeding, watering and planning. All are welcome and no experience necessary. For more information, email biofuels@sfcc.edu.

WIOA Information Session Aug. 2

Looking for a resource to fund and support a 2018-2019 retraining, certificate, or degree in a job growth industry? The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program is often a good resource for those ineligible for Pell grants and other, usual financial aid. Learn more about WIOA and eligibility at an orientation session. Thurs., Aug. 2 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in 204-I, the I-room, in the Welcome and Advising Center. Open to faculty, staff, students and community members.

Paramedic program accepting application through July 31

Santa Fe Community College’s Emergency Medical Services Institute is accepting Paramedic Training Program applications through July 31 for the year-long certificate program that starts October 15. Get all the details.

Dental Program accepting applications for fall 2018

SFCC’s Dental Department is accepting applications now for earning a Certificate in Dental Assisting, an Associate degree in Dental Health and/or a Certificate in Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) applications for fall 2018.

The application and qualification criteria for the program can be found online. For more information, contact Dental Department Director Aamna Nayyar, ext. 1258.

Johnson attends Washington D.C. conference

Janelle Johnson recently attended Leadership Training with the American College Counseling Association in Washington D.C. The training included at trip to the Capitol to advocate with N.M. senators for access to mental health counseling in the schools. See a photo of the training group.

Janelle’s term as ACCA president began July 1.

Jonathan Harrell to participate in Sam Shepard tribute

Academic Adviser Jonathan Harrell will be playing the acoustic guitar to accompany Ironweed Productions: An Evening Honoring the Work of Sam Shepard at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 29 at El Museo Cultural. Harrell will also participate in the readings. The event is free and is followed by a reception.
