Welcome new Dean Barry Hubbard, Ph.D.

Dean Barry Hubbard, Ph.D.

Barry Hubbard, Ph.D., the new Dean of the School of Trades, Advanced Technologies, and Sustainability and the School of Business, Professional Studies and Education began working at the college July 11. Please give him a warm welcome!

SFCC President Becky Rowley, Ph.D., said, “We’re excited to welcome Dr. Barry Hubbard. He’s eager to work with community partners to help promote and develop our programs to provide a pipeline into the workforce. He has a strong track record of listening to and working with community partners. He also has had success in helping secure research grants.”

Margaret Peters, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, said, “Dr. Barry Hubbard brings strong academic leadership skills to the college. He also has an extensive background as an instructor both in the classroom and in online distance learning. He’s proven his commitment to student success in his previous roles. He’s a welcome addition to the college.”

Hubbard is eager to join the SFCC team. Hubbard said, “When I discovered the job posting, I was immediately drawn to the position for several reasons. I saw significant alignment with my previous experience as a community college instructor, department chair, and administrator in degree programs designed to prepare students for careers post-graduation. It was also important to me to be a part of an institution that was purposeful and strategic in its approach to academic excellence, student success, and community partnerships. SFCC has a strong, established history in all of these areas.”

He added, “Through the interview process, it was apparent the faculty, staff, and governing board of SFCC authentically exemplified and embodied its mission of empowering students and strengthening community. Additionally, New Mexico’s innovative approach and commitment to increasing access to higher education for all its residents by removing financial barriers through free tuition is a significant game changer. To be a part of such an initiative will be thrilling. Lastly, working with diverse populations has always been an important part of my professional work, so I wanted to be a part of a community that celebrates individuality and champions inclusion. I’m happy to be in Santa Fe with its rich historical and cultural diversity. I am excited to join the SFCC team.”

Hubbard most recently served as the Dean of Associate in Science Degree Programs at Hillsborough Community College, Dale Mabry Campus, in Tampa, Florida, where he was responsible for the academic operations and administration of more than 60 associate degrees and college credit certificates in accounting, architecture/building construction, business administration, computer information technology, dietetics, electrical engineering, entrepreneurship, and hospitality/culinary management. He served as a dean for four years and worked at the college for 15 years.

SFCC creative writing graduate Irene Edwards: “Three Miracles”

Three Miracles in Yellow Medicine Review

“Three Miracles,” a story written by SFCC creative writing graduate (‘18) Irene Edwards, was published in the Spring 2022 issue of Yellow Medicine Review. The theme of the issue was “Miracles.” Yellow Medicine Review is an international journal of indigenous literature, art, and thought. It includes the work of both renowned and emerging writers, artists, and scholars and is published twice a year in spring and fall” (Poets & Writers).

Edwards wrote of adopted (extended) relationships which develop between members of different tribes and how those relationships continue with later generations and help influence and guide the relatives. These adoptive relationships are just as strong as blood relationships, quoting a family friend who once stated, “when we take you as family, we mean it.” She wrote of the importance of prayer to tribal people and its significance in adopted relationships. Edwards wrote about three personal events, her three miracles, in which these relationships revealed themselves. She is writing about a fourth miracle to add for publication. Edwards’ poem “Respect” was published in the Spring 2018 issue of Yellow Medicine Review, the theme of which was “respect.”

Cover of Yellow Medicine Review

Since 2007, Yellow Medicine Review: A Journal of Indigenous Literature, Art & Thought [has published] Indigenous writers from around the world, filling a gap in the mainstream literary culture. Each issue is [guest-edited] by a different Indigenous writer so that decisions regarding content are thusly informed” (Yellow Medicine Review website).

Edwards has a BA in Psychology from the College of Santa Fe (‘10) and also achieved an AA in Film (‘19) and an AAS in Documentary and Nonfiction Filmmaking (‘22) at SFCC. She has read her poetry and writings at various SFCC literary and poetry events and open readings at Teatro Paraguas. Her experimental film, “Worldview,” was shown in May at the “SurrealFest – A Contemporary Surreal Film Night” in Albuquerque.

In Memoriam: Paul Alan Lewis

SFCC extends condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Paul Alan Lewis who passed away on July 5 at the age of 72. Paul Alan Lewis taught at the college from March 2007 to March 2019 in the Fine Arts department. He was beloved by his students and colleagues.

It stated in his obituary, “Paul also spent many years at the Santa Fe Community College, first as a student in the photography program, and then as an instructor for mold making and bronze casting in the sculpture program. According to his students, Paul was a generous teacher, sharing his experience in mold-making, chasing, and patina work as long as his students were serious about undertaking their own work with the same devotion as he had. If not, his snarky sense of humor could put you right in your place. Many of Paul’s students returned to take his courses again and again and grew from students, to clients, to dear friends.”

Sculptor faculty member John Boyce shared, “I first met Paul when I was working for Dwight Hacket. He was the go-to person for doing patination on sculpture. I would say that he was one of the three best artists for doing bronze patina that I have known, fantastically gifted. He worked for me here at SFCC for many years teaching Bronze casting (he was a master of Bronze Casting). He also taught mold making for sculptors and here once again he was an exceptional mold maker. He was also a great teacher with the patience and generosity required to be a great teacher. He will be missed by his students and by his co-workers here at SFCC.”

Read more about his life in this obituary.

Criminal Justice instructor serves veterans’ families

SFCC instructor Joseph Villegas serves as the volunteer chaplain at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Joseph Villegas, an adjunct instructor who teaches multiple courses in SFCC’s Criminal Justice program, volunteers in an important way to assist veterans’ families.  He volunteers as the chaplain at military funerals: when no clergy is available, when the person is not affiliated with a religious organization or if the deceased’s family does not have the means to pay for a chaplain.

For 34 years Villegas has served as a chaplain in the military and for the state.  Since 2015, he has served as the New Mexico State Police and FBI Chaplain – Albuquerque Division.  It’s not an easy job. He often is called on scene for homicides, sudden child deaths and violent crimes.

Off campus, Joseph Villegas, is affectionately called Chappy José.  Most police officers, EMTs and firefighters in the region know him by name, since he responds to calls when one is either injured or killed. He’s there for the injured or dying person. His support extends to offering comfort to their families and colleagues.

Many in our state have seen his strong presence at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, as he serves in his volunteer role as chaplain at the services for those being committed to their final resting place. “That cemetery is the gateway to Northern New Mexico and important hub for veterans of the northern part of the state. I am honored to dignify the death of our veterans whether they are faith-based or not. I never charge for that service,” Villegas explains. He said, “I think with the exception of Arlington National Cemetery, I am the only chaplain offering free services at a national veterans cemetery.”

The Marine veteran also willingly steps up to serve as needed. Recently, at one graveside service there was no one to play taps. He went and got his trumpet and played taps. Some days, he’s at two or three services.

In his role at SFCC, he loves teaching. He also enjoys his interactions with Interim Veterans Resource Coordinator Krystal Patton and history professor Steve Martinez, who leads the SFCC Veteran’s Legacy Program. “I tell everyone that SFCC is a gem for veterans and everybody.”
