CHRISTUS unveils rehabilitation services vehicle produced by Auto Technologies and Welding program

CHRISTUS and SFCC dignitaries and representatives celebrate the unveiling of a customized rehabilitation services vehicle. The commemorative license plate with the name Javier recognizes the initiative that was led by the late Javier Gonzales. He initiated the conversation for the cooperative arrangement about a year and a half ago when he was Vice President and Chief Development Officer of the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation.

CHRISTUS Regional Medical Center and SFCC celebrated the unveiling of a customized rehabilitation services vehicle on January 11.

Here’s how this wonderful collaboration came together:

The expressed need for a vehicle for the Christus Rehabilitation department started with a conversation with the late Javier Gonzales (who was at the time Vice President and Chief Development Officer of the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation) more than a year and a half ago.  At that time, the rehab department needed a vehicle to practice car transfers as well as other functional activities to provide safe transfer for patients to their home environment. Javier Gonzales had a conversation with Russell Stowers, the Director for the rehab department at that time.  He promptly worked with SFCC Automotive Technologies department to secure an agreement to retrofit a “car trainer” that would be appropriate to work with patients at Christus St. Vincent. Javier Gonzales passed away from cancer in February 2022. See his obituary.

Javier Gonzales, who served as a County Commissioner and Santa Fe Mayor, had supported Santa Fe Community College throughout his career. He was also a strong advocate for St. Vincent Hospital Foundation.

He was a friend of the Automotive Technologies program director Julia Furry. She was pleased to have the opportunity to support this worthy cause of preparing a vehicle. She coordinated with the automotive and welding faculty at SFCC. They worked with one of their donated vehicles to customize the vehicle.

Randy Grissom retired as SFCC president in 2017.

Automotive faculty member Allen Mirabal was very excited to assist by cutting a car in half to have it fit in the needed space and make it safe for use. Julia and Allen met with the CHRISTUS physical therapy staff and they explained what they needed and how a vehicle would help them. They came to campus and chose a vehicle.

The students of the program and the SFCC car club began dismantling the Mazda removing the engine and other items that could cause safety issues. The trunk was left intact so family members could practice loading in a wheelchair or walker. After that was done, Estevan Ortega and the Welding program took it and welded casters to the front to make it easy to move and created a cap for the front of the vehicle.  Dorothy Piriz of SFCC Marketing & Public Relations worked with specifications to design a vehicle wrap that displays both the colors and mission statements of both the college and hospital.

Thanks to all who assisted in making this happen. This is community collaboration at its best!



Applications open for free PROTEC intensive fiber optics training

PROTEC will offer free training 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Feb. 13 – 17, 2023 at SFCC Higher Education Center. Applications due on Feb. 3. Qualified applicants will get up to 80 hours paid internships.

SFCC in partnership with Santa Fe County and the New Mexico Department of Workforce Connections announce applications are open for a free training bootcamp to become a certified fiber optics technician. Qualified applicants will get up to 80 hours paid internships.

The Professional Readiness for Technical Careers (PROTEC) program begins on Monday, Feb. 13 and continues through Friday, Feb.17 at SFCC Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road. Applications are due on Feb. 3. More information and applications are available at protecsantafe.com

The free five-day, hands-on intensive program gives students the opportunity to earn three certifications from the Fiber Optic Association that are recognized throughout the world and aligned to industry standards. These credentials will remain valid for three years, after which they can be renewed by the student. Students can earn the following certifications: Certified Fiber Optic Technician, Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Splicing, and Certified Fiber Optic Specialists in Testing and Maintenance. 

Certified optics technicians are in demand. Local employers include Ward Cabling, LLC, Continental Divide Electric Cooperative, and Facebook Contractors. 

Included in the training are these three opportunities for certifications:

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course

This introductory 3-day fiber optic tech course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. This Fiber Optic Training combines theory and 85 percent hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) and given and graded on the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home) and Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, and basic testing and troubleshooting. Anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician should attend this class.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance Course

This 2-day, 16-hour program is designed to offer advanced training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. A focal point in the program is to offer a general, easy to understand, approach to fiber optics testing standards with little theory and considerable hands-on activities. This comprehensive program explains the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and splicing and how to choose among them. This 85 percent hands-on course explores the overall spectrum of testing and maintenance of single mode fiber optics networks and provides a detailed overview and demonstration of various pieces of equipment used in testing and maintenance. Subject matter includes a detailed study of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-(7)A, OTDR fundamentals and uses, OTDR vs. Insertion Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and Attenuation testing using the Power Source and Light Meter.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing Course

This Splicing Specialist Training includes a complete PowerPoint presentation explaining the importance of high-performance splicing and further details the points necessary to achieve these splices. The depth of this presentation is much greater than most textbooks and provides background information about splicing that is very important to the student. An overview of OTDR functions and trace understanding is also provided during this presentation. The 85 percent hands-on classroom activities will provide training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of either single or multimode fiber optic cables. Inside or outside plant fiber optic cable types will be utilized at instructor’s discretion during these hands-on sessions along with fiber optics enclosures and splice trays. The student will be responsible for successfully making and testing both mechanical and fusion splices. In addition to the basic splicing activities outlined above, the student will further be required to correctly and efficiently install spliced fibers into splice trays and enclosures. The student will further be required to achieve a splice loss of less than 0.15 dB for all splices and demonstrate proficiency in interpretation of splice loss using OTDR splice traces.

Participant requirements: Students must be able to distinguish colors and have good finger dexterity. No prior workforce training is required.  For applications visit  protecsantafe.com.

‘Immortal’ exhibition opens 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26

Everyone is welcome to attend “IMMORTAL,” an opening reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, January 26. The exhibition in the SFCC Visual Arts Gallery features the work of seven potters/ceramic artists from SFCC who have passed in the last two years.

The SFCC Visual Arts Gallery will honor the memory of the following artists with displays of their work: Juliet Calabi, Michelle Goodman, Maia Sampson Michael, Carolyn Stupin, Eddie Hironaka, Donna Thompson and Frank Willett.


Frank Willett taught at SFCC.

Frank Willett taught wheel-throwing classes for many years at SFCC, as well as at Santa Fe Clay. He was awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2013. He taught and inspired many potters in the region.

PROTEC will offer free training on weekends February 11 – 26

Santa Fe Community College in partnership with Santa Fe CountyStagecoach Foundation, Inc., and Santa Fe Film Office announce applications are open for a free training program to become a film and television production assistant. Qualified applicants will get up to 160 hours paid work experience.

The Professional Readiness for Technical Careers (PROTEC) program will run on weekends and begins on Saturday, February 11 and continues through Sunday, February 26 at Santa Fe Community College. Applications are due on Jan. 31. More information and applications are available at protecsantafe.com.

The partners have teamed up to provide a multilevel, detailed Production Assistant (PA) training program. This program will provide participants with training in on-set safety, on-set etiquette, production office skills, OSHA-10 certification, interview and résumé building skills, exposure to industry standard equipment, effective communication skills and more.

Elizabeth Kianu Stahmer of Stagecoach Foundation, Inc. said, “This is an amazing opportunity and pathway into the rapidly expanding film industry here in New Mexico. It’s been an honor to work with so many wonderful folks across so many institutions to make this dream into a reality.”

Classes will begin the weekend of February 11 and continue for three weekends concluding on February 26. There will be a mix of in-person at Santa Fe Community College and online classes. Instructors are industry professionals who will bring current experience to their classes. See the class schedule at protecsantafe.com.

The Production Assistant program offers an on-the-job training component for Santa Fe County residents. The program serves to incentivize productions to provide Production Assistant opportunities to participants who complete the Production Assistant training. Santa Fe County will provide 50 percent reimbursement of the qualifying participants’ $15 an hour wages for up to 160 hours physically worked by the participant. Production companies are approved by Stagecoach Foundation, Inc., Santa Fe County, and SFCC.

Milton Riess, co-chair of the SFCC film program said, “Working as a Production Assistant is one of the best ways to gain experience on film and television sets. Being a PA allows you to be exposed to every craft in this industry and see exactly what may interest you and how to move into these specific fields. A PA is a demanding job, and this training program is a great way to prepare yourself for this exciting industry and an even more rewarding career.”

Participant requirements: No prior workforce training is required. Participants must be a high school graduate or equivalent, aged 18 years old or older, have a valid driver’s license, and be a Santa Fe County resident. For applications visit protecsantafe.com.

ESL orientations continue through Jan. 18, free classes start Jan. 30

Do you know someone who wants to learn English as a Second Language? Whether you speak no English at all, or you only know a little, or even if you know a lot of English, SFCC has classes for you.

Santa Fe Community College will offer a 12-week English as a Second Language (ESL) session from January 30 to April 27 to any adult who wants to learn English. New students must attend an orientation session to register for classes. The orientation session will include testing and placement as well as registration for the courses. The $25 registration fee is waived for the Spring 2023 term. The classes are free. Classes will be in person at the SFCC Main Campus, at Sweeney Elementary School, and online.

Orientation Schedule
Two-hour orientation sessions begin at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, January 10
  • Wednesday, January 11

Orientations are limited to 40 participants. Arrive on time. Only future students may be present. Additional guests will not be permitted in the orientation area.

Students interested in online classes can attend an orientation at SFCC or contact the ESL Program (505-428-1329 or april.smith1@sfcc.edu) to arrange an online orientation. Students will need a stable internet connection to attend online classes.

Classes meet twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays depending on the level. Morning and evening classes are available at SFCC. Evening classes are offered at Sweeney Elementary School. Free childcare for children ages 4 to 12 is available for evening students at Sweeney Elementary School. Students are expected to attend classes twice a week.

Learn the art of pairing wine and food or become an expert in Italian wine styles. Or expand your culinary skills with Aditi Thatte and learn the secrets of Indian vegetarian cooking.

Discover the joys of the region’s geology and history
Enjoy learning about the geology of our region with Kirk Kempter on a variety of hiking trips. William Neuwirth, a biologist and naturalist, will lead online classes as well as offer a hiking excursion. Join SFCC’s history professor Stephen C. Martinez, Ph.D., for a three-part brown bag lunch lecture series on 19th century New Mexico history.

Whether you’re looking for professional development opportunities or want to break into the “New Collar” workforce you can choose from a variety of options. There are dozens of classes offered either online or in person.

Categories include poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, academic essay, image/photography, instructor-nominated, & en español. Winners receive $50 and runners-up receive $25

Winners, runners-up, and honorable mentions will all be published in Accolades, will be invited to read at the celebration, and will also be considered for the SFCC Foundation Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship.

  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least three credits and should not yet have earned a degree.

LANL Foundation Four-year Undergraduate Scholarships opportunity

The LANL Foundation’s four-year undergraduate scholarships are open to students pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree in any field of study. Students submit one application to be considered for more than 30 unique scholarship awards. Scholarships range from $1,000 for a single year up to $20,000 over four years. When a spot comes available at the Kids Campus, students get priority placement. Kids Campus wants to support student parents and hopes that those needing childcare will get on the waitlist.

Children of degree-seeking SFCC students, SFCC employees, and full-time students at the Higher Education Center are prioritized for placement to support a two-generation philosophy of education at the college.

SFCC Library family study room now open

If you’re a student parent, we have good news for you! The SFCC Library has opened a new family study room for students who have children. The room has a space for children with toys, books, and special-sized furniture. The room will have three computer stations and room for students working on laptops.

It is open all hours the library is open. It will be available to current students when they have their children with them. Please note: This is not daycare, students must remain with their children. The library’s restroom adjacent to the study room has been updated and is family-friendly with a changing station.

SFCC Library Spring semester hours are:
Mon. – Thurs. 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Fri. 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sat. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

SFCC can help you pay for college with scholarships. One simple application puts you in consideration for state institutional and Foundation private scholarships. Scholarships are available for new and returning, part-time and full-time students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year. Scholarships are also available for second-generation college students, Veterans, Native American students, Hispanic students and students with disabilities (must be registered with the SAS department at kayla.garcia1@sfcc.edu). SFCC offers performance-based scholarships through Contract for a Better Tomorrow (CBT).

Joseph L. Villegas, Sr. featured in 10 Who Made a Difference

SFCC Adjunct Instructor Joseph L. Villegas, Sr., was featured in the December 2022 – The Santa Fe New Mexican “10 Who Made a Difference.” Mr. Villegas is also an active member with the American Legion Lucero Y Nava Post 12 – Santa Fe. The American Legion Lucero Y Nava Post 12 – Santa Fe is All-volunteer honors guard marches to and from memorial sites within the spacious national cemetery almost unnoticed, breaking the quiet at a burial only when members fire off volleys of blanks from 12-gauge shotguns, taps, and the unfolding of the United States Flag and presentation to the grieving. In Memoriam: Janet Wise

Janet Wise

With a heavy heart and sadness, SFCC shares that Janet Wise, long-time former executive director of Marketing and Public Relations, passed away this weekend after a brief illness. SFCC appreciated her years of dedication and commitment to the college. Many of us had a long personal connection with her and will be grieving her loss. Please take care of yourself as you deal with this difficult news.

Her daughter Talia has shared this about her life and upcoming service:

Janet Ann Wise passed away after a short illness on January 8, 2023 with her sister and her daughter at her side. Janet was born in Detroit, Michigan and lived in that area until 1962 when her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. She loved riding her horse along the Albuquerque acequias and graduated from Valley High School in 1971. Upon graduation she began her life in Santa Fe, pursuing a career in public relations and starting her family.

Her early professional roles included Deputy Press Secretary for Governor Bruce King and Director of Public Information for the City of Santa Fe.

In 1984 Janet took a public relations position at the College of Santa Fe and remained a fixture of that institution’s marketing and administrative offices for twenty years. In the 2000’s Janet’s passion for higher education and public relations continued, serving students and communities at the state level, and then as the Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the Santa Fe Community College where she retired in 2017.

Janet loved music, playing piano and french horn as a hobby, and attending concerts with her friends and family. She enjoyed reading and always stayed active by hiking, traveling, taking zumba classes, and caring for her pets.

Janet is preceded in death by her beloved husband Ed Moreno, and her parents Donald and Phyllis Wise. She is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law, Talia and David Sledge, step-daughter and son-in-law Robin and Robert Chadwick, step-daughter Lisa Moreno, sister and brother-in-law Lori and George Bradley, Grandchildren: Price, Solomon, Evelyn, Rozlyn, as well as extended family including nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Rivera Family Kiva Chapel, 417 E. Rodeo Rd, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Defensive Driving Certification class 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 10

As per policy 5-10, everyone is required  to take a Defensive Driving Class prior to operating SFCC vehicles.

The next Defensive Driving Class has been scheduled for Tuesday January 10th, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the Boardroom room 223. (Please arrive promptly or it will cause the class to go further in time.)

To receive full credit for the class, you must arrive promptly at 8:00 a.m. and attend the full 4-5 hours.

Art instructor Jared Weiss featured in Pasatiempo; exhibition continues through Feb. 12

Jared Weiss, Art and Design Faculty, was featured in the Jan. 6 issue of Pasatiempo, in the story titled, “Life of the Party.” (Note: If you have difficulty opening the link it’s also posted here on Yahoo News.)

His exhibition “The Party’s Over” at the Ellsworth Gallery, 215 E. Palace Avenue, is open through February 12. Visit Ellsworth Gallery for more information. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

Weiss is quoted in Brian Sandford’s story:

“I think of the figures in the work as actors on a stage,” Weiss says. “The figures in my paintings are very engaged in whatever action they are performing. They have urgency. It’s like a small snippet of a theatrical production: figures are often looking at something that we as the viewer can’t see because it is out of frame or obscured in some way. When the figure is turned away, the viewer has more space to create their own story about what is happening.

“For me, the more open-ended an image is, the more potential the viewer has to be an active participant in what the painting ‘means.’”

Also, Sandford wrote: Gallery owner Barry Ellsworth praises the distinctive way Weiss incorporates the Land of Enchantment’s landscapes, calling him a deep thinker who carefully considers his words and actions. He was attracted to Weiss’ work because “besides the obvious skill and dedication that he puts into it, I love work that, like, captures a moment. I feel like the moments that he captures are so special. They’re these sort of dream moments.”


Title V Professional Development for Faculty

During the Spring 2023 semester, the SFCC Title V Hispanic Serving Institution grant will be supporting a number of professional development opportunities for faculty in online teaching and in culturally responsive teaching for STEM faculty. Effective Thursday December 22, 2022 at 7:00pm Microsoft Operating System and Office updates will be deployed. You will have until Thursday January 12, 2023 at 7:00pm to install these updates at your convenience. After the deadline the updates will be installed automatically and force a restart of your machine.

Note: Every month it is critical to install Security/Windows updates to protect your systems from malicious attacks. Please install these patches as soon as you receive notification that you have updates to install. The updates may take some time to install so please plan accordingly.

For iMac users no action necessary, updates will be installed automatically overnight every third Tuesday of each month.

Workday Is Coming! Wave 1 colleges (CNM, CCC, NNMC, SFCC) continue to be on target for going live with Workday in just a few weeks: on Sat., Dec. 17. Making this dream a reality is thanks to the amazing contributions and extraordinary commitment from the Implementation Team. Meet the project team members here. On Dec. 17, data and information related to Finance, Human Resources, and Payroll that’s currently in Banner will be live in Workday. CHESS will oversee Payroll on behalf of our colleges, and a Payroll Transition Team is working on the details to ensure a smooth move. Be sure to thank your coworkers for their many months of work devoted to developing and launching our fabulous new Workday technology. We can’t wait to see the results!

Training is Here! Beginning Dec. 1, Workday training starts for all employees and all managers. Training will focus on Workday self-service activities. You will learn to update your profile information, record time worked, request time off, and more. All employees must complete the 30-minute training session. Supervisors and managers will need to complete an additional 30-minute training session. Depending on your role and your assigned tasks in Finance, Payroll, and Human Resources, more training may be required.

The Training Team offers 4 types of learning opportunities:

  1. Self-Paced: recorded videos, e-learning
  2. Instructor-Led: presentations and demonstrations of key activities
  3. In-System: some Workday screens provide field-specific instructions and links to helpful information
  4. Self-Guided: tip sheets and other documents that provide step-by-step instructions

Make Tax-AIDE appointments now


SFCC and AARP Foundation will once again offer free tax services. This year services will be in-person at the main campus from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays from Jan. 30 through April 18. You must schedule an appointment in advance — preferably online. If someone has no computer access, they can call 505-428-1780. Leave a clear voicemail with your name and phone number. Volunteers will return calls when possible.

Please Note: To protect Tax-Aide volunteers and the taxpayers they serve, taxpayers are required to wear masks during their appointment. Volunteers will be wearing masks.

Intake and other forms may be picked up at the site during tax preparation hours or you may download these forms from the SFCC website.  Please arrive 15-30 minutes early for your appointment.

SFCC Library partners with State Library to offer access to Scribe Mini Station for Blind and Print-Disabled

Scribe Mini Station at SFCC Library

SFCC Library has partnered with the New Mexico State Library to offer access to a Scribe Mini Station for individuals eligible for Blind and Print-Disabled services to enable them to download audio books. SFCC Library is the first academic library in the country to offer this service.

The Scribe Mini is a self-service station for patrons who are familiar with the digital cartridge process. This service will be available to members of the public (who are eligible for Blind and Print-Disabled services) during SFCC Library’s open library hours. More information about the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled and applications for using the service can be found here:

Early Childhood Center of Excellence offers free early childhood speaker series with equity and social justice focus; next talk on Jan. 13

The Early Childhood Center of Excellence (ECCOE) offers a free early childhood speaker series featuring national and New Mexico experts focused on equity and social justice in early childhood teacher preparation. This series is for higher education faculty and anyone interested in bringing equity to their work with young children and families. This free virtual series runs from September 2022 through May 2023. Registration is open now!

Will Wilson in exhibition at Millicent Rogers Museum through Jan. 29

Will Wilson’s Connecting the Dots: Cameron Straightdown Sefx, archival pigment print from digital photograph

Photography instructor Will Wilson is featured in the exhibition, “Southwest Reflections: In Between Shadows of the Land” at the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos. The opening reception is from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 8. The exhibit continues through Jan. 29, 2023.

From the press release, “Offering a common thread to life, everything that exists bears a shadow. As the second installment of the Millicent Rogers Museum’s “New Mexico Artists” series, this exhibition offers a diverse exploration of artists’ portrayals of environmental relationships and the ways these events become conveyed through shadows, reflections, and movements.”

Santa Fe Reporter story explains on-demand buses that serve SFCC community

The Santa Fe Reporter story on Nov. 9 by Andy Lyman, “In demand-drivers mean in-demand buses,” featured Paul Volmer, an SFCC film student, as well as Director of Student Engagement and Recruitment Marcos Maez, who also serves on the City Transit Advisory Board. Route 21 (which comes to the college) is currently an on-demand route, which means riders must contact dispatchers when they need a ride on the bus. (It is not currently operating on a regular bus schedule and is only available on weekdays.) Also, other routes that feed into that route are also impacted. The story states, “For on-demand service on Santa Fe Trails routes 5, 6, 21, 22 and the Museum Hill route on weekdays and weekends as well as Route 24 and 26 on weekends, contact dispatchers at (505) 955-2001.” Keep that number handy if you need to use the bus. Bike riders might find it necessary to take the bus on days there is snow and ice. For more information visit the Santa Fe Trails site.
