Join us at noon for Social Justice Series keynote

Leola Paquin, Ph.D.

Please join the SFCC Community for the kick-off keynote address of the Social Justice series on Youtube at noon today, Monday, Feb. 7.

President Becky Rowley sent an email invitation to the campus community on Jan. 28 stating:

I’m excited to share news of an important SFCC online series, “Honoring Our Relationships Through Solidarity.” I encourage you all to attend and be part of the dynamic exchange of ideas that will guide us through the future. Please accept this invitation to keep it in your calendar. The session is a keynote address from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7. You will be able to join here: https://youtu.be/CESKIVV8vvk

I welcome all SFCC students, faculty and staff members to participate.

The series funded by Title V was developed by a subcommittee of the President’s Diversity Advisory Committee. This series dovetails with last spring’s employee Professional Development Day that explored many ideas regarding anti-racism and equity.

The “Honoring Our Relationships Through Solidarity” series will allow everyone to take a deeper dive into these concepts. A distinguished team from the University of New Mexico (Shiv Desai, Ph.D.; Nancy López, Ph.D.; Leola Paquin, Ph.D.; and Vincent Werito, Ph.D.) will launch the series with a presentation that will be followed by several opportunities in the following weeks for you to participate in dialog to identify systems of exclusion and oppression at SFCC, develop a framework that helps identify systems of oppression and explore the role of data in dismantling systems of exclusion and oppression at SFCC.

On MySFCC you will find a Social Justice Series web page (login required.) You can access the page from MySFCC by clicking on the “Social Justice Series” button in the Resources section or the “Social Justice Series” menu item. This page will be updated with links for the online events. You’ll also see the full schedule and speaker bios.

Shiv R. Desai, Ph.D.

We want everyone at SFCC to watch the initial presentation and to provide input in the subsequent conversations. Student voices are vital to these conversations, so please encourage our students to attend.

I appreciate you taking out the time from your busy schedules to be part of this process. I am also excited to share that you will be able to earn a digital badge (PDAC Social Justice Series badge) by attending the entire series. No registration is required. This digital noncredit badge can be earned by employees or students and could be useful to add to your résumé for future employment.

Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to equity at Santa Fe Community College.

SFCC Visual Arts Gallery presents Border Artist exhibition opening on March 11

Nolan Winkler’s “Question & Reply,” mixed media on wood panel, 24” by 24”

SFCC’s Visual Arts Gallery presents the exhibition, “Border Artists,” which opens from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 11. The exhibit will feature work from 17 artists who are part of the Border Artist’s group from southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. Proof of vaccination and masks will be required for attendance at the opening.

SFCC’s Director of Art on Campus said, “We’re excited to showcase some of the spectacular artwork being produced downstate, as well as the work by some artists from El Paso, Texas. This diverse selection of art provides our community with a window to work they might not generally have an opportunity to see. It’s also quite inspiring for the college’s art students to be exposed to different forms of artistic expression.”

The exhibiting group shared this background, “The Border Artists were conceived in late 1990 as a way of increasing visibility and recognition for the work of a group of fine artists in Southern New Mexico. Finding much success, the group continued to add new members and organized as a non-profit artists’ association in 1995. … Membership is by invitation. …

The following artists will participate in the exhibition: Margaret Berrier, jewelry; Emmitt Booher, digital photography; Tauna Cole, oil painting; Janice Cook, porcelain & mixed media; Sherry Carter-Doil, mixed media painting; Linda Elkins, mixed media collage; Amanda Jaffe, ceramics; Suzanne Kane, ceramic and steel; Cassandra Lockwood, acrylic painting; Rosemary McLaughlin, oil painting; Jeanne Rundell, mixed media painting; Storm Sermay, archival pigment photographic prints; Jo-an Smith, painting (oil and acrylic), David Sorensen, Digital photography; Zoe Spiliotis, 2-dimensional art; Jean Wilkey, oil painting; and Nolan Winkler, acrylic and mixed media painting.

Governor plans to deliver free college, simplify scholarship programs

From a press release from the Governor’s office and N.M. Higher Education Department:

“Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Jan. 21 announced the introduction of legislation designed to enact a sweeping expansion of the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, delivering tuition-free higher education to every New Mexican who wishes to pursue higher education.

Sponsored by Sen. Liz Stefanics and Rep. Joy Garratt, Senate Bill 140, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship Act, would establish the most accessible state-funded scholarship program in the country and provide $85.5 million toward the Opportunity Scholarship. Up to 35,000 New Mexico students enrolled at a public college or university in the fall of 2022 will attend tuition-free. It would also combine four existing state scholarship funds into a single fund, enabling colleges and universities to award one full scholarship to cover full tuition and fees for eligible students.

SB 140 establishes the program in law to ensure that future New Mexicans can continue to benefit from tuition-free access to higher education. The legislation also simplifies the process for colleges to award scholarships by combining pre-existing funds for the Opportunity, Lottery, College Affordability, and Legislative Endowment scholarship programs into a single non-reverting fund.
