Automotive Technologies program earns national ASE accreditation
The Automotive Technologies program has earned accreditation from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) through February 1, 2028. The program underwent rigorous evaluation to achieve the coveted recognition.
Julia Furry, Director of Automotive Technologies said, “The designation means a lot to our regional auto industry partners who value the ASE accreditation. It also assures the community that better technicians will join the workforce.”
A 17,000 square foot state-of-the-art Automotive Technologies Center offers a well-equipped space that provides students with the background and knowledge to earn the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in up to eight competency areas: Automotive Engine Repair, Auto Maintenance and Light Truck Repair, Automatic Transmission Transaxle, Automotive Heating and Air Conditioning, Brakes, Manual Transmission and Drive Train, Steering and Suspension, Electricity/Electronic Systems and Engine Performance. Students can also earn an A.A.S. in Automotive Technologies.
Read quotes from regional employers and more in this press release. Also, see the Feb. 21 Santa Fe New Mexican story by Margaret O’Hara, “Santa Fe Community College’s auto repair program receives accreditation” and the Santa Fe New Mexican editor’s Feb. 18 column, “PHILL CASAUS Commentary: Sometimes, it’s the certificate, not the degree, that makes a difference.”

Participate in Basic Needs Survey through March 1
The UNM Basic Needs Project Team is conducting a statewide study to understand the extent of basic needs insecurities among students, faculty, and staff across all public New Mexico colleges and universities and offer participants the opportunity to share solutions.
What is the Basic Needs Statewide Study?
- A survey to assess basic needs insecurities of students, staff, and faculty at all public colleges and universities in New Mexico.
- Survey topics include food security, housing security, mental health, transportation access, and participant recommendations for solutions.
- The survey takes about 10 min.
- The survey is completely anonymous.
- This is the first statewide study in the nation to include full- time, part-time, and adjunct faculty and staff.
Who:
- Any current student, faculty, or staff (full-time or part-time) at a NM public college or university can participate.
- 16 – 17 yr old dual-enrolled students may participate.
- This survey is for anyone on the continuum of needs security. Everyone can have their say to improve higher ed!
How:
- The online survey can be taken via this link (Feb 15 – March 1st): https://survey.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d4NyzVMIJN3IzI2
- Or via this QR code:
- Some institutions have paper copies available. Please see the list at the end of these FAQs for locating a copy with a stamped envelope for you to return.
- If your institution is not on this list and you would like to receive paper copies, please contact us at basicneeds@unm.edu.
When:
- The online survey is open February 15th – March 1st.
- Paper surveys must be returned via pre-addressed and postage paid envelope by Wednesday, March 15.
Why:
- 40% of students who start college in NM do not finish. This study will help us understand some of the causes.
- A goal of the study is to contribute to the conversation about equity in higher education because some groups of students have much higher rates of needs insecurity as well as higher dropout rates.
- Faculty and staff needs insecurities have not been documented.
- Data are needed to better inform spending priorities in higher education.
- Survey completers will have a chance to win a $40 egift card to Amazon or Walmart. We are raffling more than $30,000 in gift cards!
A closer look:
- The survey is mostly closed questions (e.g. multiple choice and yes/no) but includes a few open ended question for more detailed information and participant recommendations.
- Because the survey is anonymous, responses are completely confidential and will never be tied to participants. If you supply your name and email for the raffle it will be de-linked from your survey.
Results
- Initial results will be shared widely in May 2023.
- A Tableau site with data from all institutions will be made publicly available.
- Responses to open-ended questions and any comments provided will not be shared with any information that might be used to identify individual participants.
- The data will be used to create evidence-based interventions and inform The 2030 Project: Reducing Needs Insecurity in NM Higher Education, a statewide consortium.
The UNM Basic Needs Project is a research team of faculty and students. The study is funded by Governor Lujan Grisham’s Food Initiative and the NM Higher Education Department.

Visual Arts Gallery to open ‘Land, Space and Color – An Exhibit of Paintings by Felix Voltsinger” on March 16
Opening Reception: 4 to 6 p.m. March 16
Artist’s Gallery Talk: Begins 12:30 p.m. March 31
Santa Fe Community College Visual Arts Gallery presents the art exhibition, “Land, Space and Color – An Exhibit of Paintings by Felix Voltsinger,” which opens with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 16 and runs through Thursday, April 19 in the gallery at 6401 Richards Avenue. The exhibition features the artwork of Russian-born artist and School of Arts and Design faculty member Felix Voltsinger. He will give a Gallery Talk about his work and his approach to painting at 12:30 p.m. on Friday March 31, in the gallery.
Voltsinger, an accomplished plein-air artist, has taught painting and drawing to SFCC students every semester since 2008. He plans to retire from teaching at the end of this semester after a long and successful career.
Laura Rosenfeld, Program Head for drawing, painting and foundations at SFCC states, “This exhibition celebrates a valued faculty member and an approach to painting that demands great skill as well as a determined spirit in order to feel as well as see and interpret the land.”
This exhibition of paintings and detailed drawings is the result of many years painting in a traditional plein-air mode. Voltsinger loves nature and delights in taking extended camping trips to work in remote locations. While he often creates pieces in one session, he also returns to the same place at the same time of day to continue to develop a piece. He uses his sketches, memory, and imagination to create larger works in the studio, eschewing the use of photographic reference. Whether at the easel, by the campfire, or sitting on the riverbank with a cup of tea, he constantly strives to be a better observer, opening himself to the richness and complexity of nature and deepening his understanding of the world around him.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in the Soviet era, he demonstrated artistic talents early in life and was directed to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg from age 12 to his completion of a master’s degree in his twenties. Of Jewish ancestry, Voltsinger emigrated to New York City in the early 1980s. In New York he worked as a freelance illustrator and art conservator, relying on the traditional training provided by the classically-based Soviet academy system.
His love of painting and landscape brought him to the Western United States and Colorado where he lived in a small mountain cabin off the grid 9,000 feet above Salida, Colorado for more than a decade. During this time, he supported himself solely through the sales of his paintings.
As he approaches age 70, Voltsinger said, “I plan to live off the grid again at 8,000 feet, as a painter and spiritually-questing hermit, near the Continental Divide many miles west of Socorro with a tremendous view of the curvature of the earth.”
Arts and Design Dean James (Jim) Wysong, Ed.D., states, “We have been very fortunate to have Felix on our faculty. His passion, for both painting and teaching, has made him very popular with our students. While we will miss him dearly, we wish him all the best in his new endeavors.”
For more information about the exhibition or the gallery, contact Art of Campus Director Linda Cassel via email at linda.cassel@sfcc.edu or call 505-428-1501.

‘Immortal’ exhibition closes March 9
‘Immortal,’ an exhibition in the SFCC Visual Arts Gallery, features the work of seven potters/ceramic artists from SFCC who have passed in the last two years.
Brian Sandford wrote in Pasatiempo on January 20, “SFCC artist and student Suzanne Vilmain says she came up with the idea of the exhibit after losing (Michelle) Goodman, ‘an artist I’ve known and loved for 40 years.’ Vilmain says she approached John Boyce, the college’s head of sculpture, about presenting a group memorial.
The exhibition honors the memory of the following artists with displays of their work: Juliet Calabi, Michelle Goodman, Maia Sampson Michael, Carolyn Stupin, Eddie Hironaka, Donna Thompson and Frank Willett. Willett taught wheel-throwing classes for many years at SFCC, as well as at Santa Fe Clay. He was awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2013. He taught and inspired many potters in the region.
The exhibition continues through March 9. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call SFCC Director of Art on Campus Linda Cassel at 505-428-1501.

Message about preferred names
The following message was shared on Friday, February 3:
Dear Faculty,
While the college has always supported our students, we now have another technological opportunity to provide an empowering, safe, and nondiscriminatory educational and work environment. Beginning on Monday February 6, students will be able update their preferred name in Self Service Banner (SSB9).
The student’s legal name will be on your class roster and their preferred name, if applicable, will appear in parenthesis. For example, Gonzales, Bernadette (Charmaine). For legal purposes, the student’s legal name will still appear on all formal documents such as Financial Aid information, 1098-T’s and transcripts.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
With kind regards,
Bernadette Gonzales. MA Ed. (she, her, hers)

Recording: ChatGPT’s Implications for Higher Ed
By now you’ve probably heard of ChatGPT, the free AI platform that can “write” full-length, college-level essays on virtually any topic in seconds. From academic integrity to assessment, ChatGPT’s impact on higher education will be far-ranging. This session includes a demo of how ChatGPT works, implications for higher education and how other colleges and universities are responding. This session was led by SFCC librarians.

Work has begun on connector roads to SFCC
Work expected to continue until fall
The Santa Fe New Mexican reported in the Jan. 25 story, “County hopes construction of connector roads leads to growth south of city,” that “Santa Fe County is starting the construction phase of a more than $20 million infrastructure project 20 years in the making, which aims to provide better access to Santa Fe Community College and accommodate future growth south of the city. …
“The “northeast connector” involves construction of roadway and two roundabout intersections between Dinosaur Trail and Rabbit Road, giving drivers a direct route between them. Currently, drivers traveling west from Rabbit Road are required to drive through the Oshara Village subdivision to reach Dinosaur Trail or busy Richards Avenue.
“The “southeast connector” will serve as an alternate route from Rabbit Road to Avenida del Sur to reduce traffic congestion on Richards Avenue. This route also will provide secondary emergency access to the community college, according to the county.”
To see videos and maps about this project visit: https://www.sfcconnectors.com/ Also, hear about this on KSFR-radio.

Santa Fe Reporter story explains on-demand buses that serve SFCC community
The Santa Fe Reporter story on Nov. 9 by Andy Lyman, “In demand-drivers mean in-demand buses,” featured Paul Volmer, an SFCC film student, as well as Director of Student Engagement and Recruitment Marcos Maez, who also serves on the City Transit Advisory Board. Route 21 (which comes to the college) is currently an on-demand route, which means riders must contact dispatchers when they need a ride on the bus. (It is not currently operating on a regular bus schedule and is only available on weekdays.) Also, other routes that feed into that route are also impacted. The story states, “For on-demand service on Santa Fe Trails routes 5, 6, 21, 22 and the Museum Hill route on weekdays and weekends as well as Route 24 and 26 on weekends, contact dispatchers at (505) 955-2001.” Keep that number handy if you need to use the bus. Bike riders might find it necessary to take the bus on days there is snow and ice. For more information visit the Santa Fe Trails site.
