Congratulations to Nursing pin recipients

SFCC celebrated the Fall semester nursing graduates with a pinning ceremony on December 5. The SFCC community joined the family and friends of the Fall nursing graduates.

The nurse pinning ceremony is a solemn ceremony, which includes the reading of the Florence Nightingale Pledge, lighting of the Lamp of Knowledge, as well as the pinning. The lamp lighting ceremony formally recognizes the students’ entry into the nursing profession as the lamp symbolizes the light that a nurse becomes to patients and as a symbol of hope and comfort to those suffering. The tradition commemorates the heroine of nursing Florence Nightingale, who was seen in the dark alleys with a lamp while caring for the injured soldiers of the Crimean War.

Audrey Lucero recognized for exceptional service to SFCC boards

The SFCC Governing Board honored Audrey Lucero, Executive Assistant to the SFCC Boards, earlier this month for her outstanding dedication to the college and her exceptional work supporting the boards.

“Audrey has put up with us day and night, weekend in, weekend out, holidays, and we’re not an easy crew,” said Board Chair Jody Pugh. Board Member Lina Germann, Ph.D., added, “Thank you, Audrey, for helping us and keeping us straight.”

Swing Shift Big Band Holiday concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, in FEC

SFCC presents a free Big Band Holiday concert by Swing Shift Santa Fe at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, upstairs in the Atrium of the William C. Student shares his experiences in Adobe Construction program for ‘Last Straw Journal’

SFCC student Mateo Salinas Clarke who attended both virtual and in-person classes in Adobe Construction shared about his experiences in the new issue of “Last Straw Journal.” His instructor Kurt Gardella shared the issue and story.

Mateo Salinas Clarke writes about the program. Here is part of his story, “As a student, the sense of community and shared purpose is palpable. Through hands-on practice cultivating the “relational soil” of our learning environment, the program workshops are immediately rewarding. Much like in social movements, where deep connections and trust among participants are essential, our in-person interactions foster a unique bond that goes beyond simply acquiring skills.

“You can learn a lot remotely and through online videos, but there is something very special about having an in-person learning community where you actively nurture these connections. It is important to feel the textures, hear the sounds, and develop tactile experience with a trowel. Despite many of us commuting from farflung locations, we are always excited to take turns digging earth and mixing mud. While I commute from the north, I have classmates who take equally long journeys from New Mexico’s southern border near El Paso for workshops. I even have classmates from Australia and Germany who were drawn by the desert landscapes and lifestyles. We share a bond of passion for earthen construction, both as a solution to the climate crisis and as a cultural heritage practice
that extends beyond the classroom or workshop.

“Students are hungry for this type of coursework. SFCC routinely has its adobe classes waitlisted. Kurt, my instructor, shared with me that although it has taken “many years of hard work to build the program to a sustainable student base” the Adobe Certificate program at SFCC is “beginning to see workforce development progress.”

SFCC and SF Higher Education Center to close for Winter Break from December 21 through January 5

Santa Fe Community College (SFCC),  6401 Richards Avenue, and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center (SFHEC), 1950 Siringo Road, will close for Winter Break from Saturday, December 21 through Sunday, January 5. All campus facilities will be closed. No classes, activities or student services will be available. SFCC’s early childhood development center Kids Campus and the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center also will be closed.

SFCC, SF Higher Education Center, and Kids Campus will reopen with regular hours on Monday, January 6. SFCC’s William C. Witter Fitness Education Center will reopen at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, January 6.

Registration for spring 2025 classes is now open. Bio:  Jake Skeets (he/him) is the author of “Eyes Bottle Dark with a Mouthful of Flowers,” winner of the National Poetry Series, American Book Award, Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and Whiting Award. His work has appeared widely in journals and magazines such as Poetry, The New York Times Magazine, and The Paris Review. Other honors include an NEA Grant for Arts Projects, a Mellon Projecting All Voices Fellowship, and the 2023-2024 Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi. He is from the Navajo Nation and teaches at the University of Oklahoma.

Applications open for Production Assitant Training positions for Film and Television

Free to all New Mexico residents (see note below about how SFCC employees can attend using EEB benefits) Continuing Education & Workforce Development in partnership with the Stagecoach Foundation Inc. and SFCC FILM program will be accepting applications for the Production Assistant Training for Film and Television course beginning January 4. Students earn their OSHA 10 and learn how to apply for paid internships managed by the Stagecoach Foundation. Classes are hands-on and taught by film industry professionals.

Registration for the Spring 2025 semester is now open. You’ll get the biggest selection of classes if you register as soon as possible. Some classes close fast, so don’t delay. If you know someone who has not applied to SFCC or is not sure about the registration process, please have them visit sfcc.edu/get-started/apply-and-register/. You can look for classes in the dropdown menu at sfcc.edu/look-for-a-credit-class/. Returning students need to log onto MySFCC to register. Click on the Registration button there to get started.

Update about the AlgaePrize student team

SFCC Innovation Innovation Center Director Ondine Frauenglass shared this latest update on the AlgaePrize student team. She is the team’s advisor and is grateful for support from faculty members Stephen Gomez, Ph.D., and R. Charlie Shultz.

SFCC’s AlgaePrize Team: Just AD Algae is hard at work this semester with just 5 months to go in the 18-month national competition sponsored by the Department of Energy and the Algae Foundation. The team started work in March, 2024 and has completed phase 1 of the project: successfully cultivating algae at large scale and running an anaerobic digester (AD) to produce biogas.  Biogas from the anaerobic digester process is a renewable energy replacement for natural gas. The team’s experiments will demonstrate that algae increases the yield of biogas when coupled with used cooking oil, showing an economical waste-to-value pathway that will benefit small farm and off grid operations with a renewable energy source. In phase 2, Genuine Foods, Director, Trish Campbell, is assisting the team with donations of used cooking oil from the SFCC Food Service cafeteria.  Initial experiments have shown positive results. Additional experiments will confirm findings and expand the understanding of how algae boosts the productivity of biogas in anaerobic digestors.

The Just AD Algae team presented the project in two academic research competitions this fall: NM-EPSCoR’s Building an Advanced Energy Ecosystem in New Mexico (BAEENM) conference, 9/23/2024, and the New Mexico Research Symposium, 10/19/2024. These events included competitors from universities and community colleges across the state. The team won 2^nd place at the EPSCoR BAEENM conference and networked with experts and entrepreneurs in the Energy Industry.

Students: Need childcare? Make sure you’re on the Kids Campus waitlist

When a spot comes available at the Kids Campus, students get priority placement. Kids Campus wants to support student parents and hopes that those needing childcare will get on the waitlist.

Children of degree-seeking SFCC students, SFCC employees, and full-time students at the Higher Education Center are prioritized for placement to support a two-generation philosophy of education at the college.

Luncheon was a fun, festive celebration

Thank you to Lucia Lucero and members of the Celebration Committee, as well as the SFCC Foundation for making the holiday employee luncheon possible. As always, a giant thank you goes out to the whole Facilities and Operations team for setting up and cleaning up after the event. Director of Advising, Career, Transfer, and International Services Reynaldo Maestas filled the Campus Center with his beautiful voice as he sang in Spanish. Robert Bond presented at NMTIE

Robert Bond gave a presentation at the New Mexico Technology In Education (NMTIE) conference last month which was truly outstanding! The topic was Canvas LMS: How to Improve Security. The way he engaged the audience with his dynamic delivery and insightful content was remarkable. The enthusiasm and passion he brought were infectious, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. It’s clear that he put a lot of effort and thought into his presentation, and it certainly paid off. Congratulations on a job well done!

Jonathan Harrell, Katie Studer and Nicole Ferreira presented at National Academic Advising Association Conference (NACADA)

SFCC team gave the presentation: ‘Designing with Chaos: A Workshop Series for Exploratory Community College Students’

SFCC Undecided & Exploratory Advisors Nicole Ferreira and Jonathan Harrell and Career & Transfer Advisor Katie Studer attended the Annual Conference of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) October 27-30, 2024, in Pittsburgh, PA, with funding from SFCC’s Title V grant. There, they gave an hour-long presentation titled “Designing with Chaos: A Workshop Series for Exploratory Community College Students” to academic advisors and other higher education professionals from across the country.

The presentation highlighted a three-part workshop series that they created to support SFCC students in the career and major exploration process. The workshops introduce students to a variety of activities, resources, tools, and ideas drawn from an eclectic mix of sources including the Stanford Life Design curriculum, Virginia Gordon’s career advising curriculum, and the Chaos Theory of Careers. This work aligns with a growing body of research that emphasizes the importance of giving college students the time and resources to find the right fit and develop meaningful academic and career plans. The workshops are the product of over a year of scholarly research and piloting different activities with SFCC students.

Nicole Ferreira shares the following on behalf of the three presenters:

“Designing with Chaos” at NACADA had a wonderful turnout! Attendees reported that the presentation offered “great examples of theory and research” and that the presenters had “great energy.” One attendee praised the presentation as one of the most engaging and informative that she had seen at the conference. Jonathan, Katie, and Nicole thank all the students who attended and contributed to the career and major exploration workshops. Your pertinent questions and engagement with the workshop curriculum made this an incredibly enriching experience for all of us. Thank you!! We plan to continue offering these workshops and developing new content to support SFCC students in the exploration process.

The December 2024 CHESS Connection newsletter opens with a festive highlight: “A Workday Student Carol,” celebrating the collaborative spirit of CHESS and its Workday initiatives.

Key updates include the Financial Aid vision for streamlined processes, the launch of a new Technology Support Hub for easy access to resources, and reminders for employees to verify their Workday information and sign up for electronic W2s. The newsletter also recognizes CHESS Superstars for their dedication and invites staff to join “Coffee with Kathy,” an informal chat with CEO Kathy Ulibarri. Duplicating Center accepting photos for SFCC Pet of the Month

Send pictures of your pet to DuplicatingCenter@sfcc.edu. Each month a pet will be chosen, and notepads will be available with their picture. The proud owner will receive a 36×36 poster of their pet.

The Duplicating Center hopes to collect enough pictures to create a 2025 SFCC Pet Calendar.

Legendary Chef Johnny Vee, featured on the catalog cover, will offer three culinary classes

Attend a film premiere of “Blue: Life and Art of George Rodrigue”

Dozens of new classes offered on campus, 6401 Richards Avenue, and at partner locations

SFCC’s Continuing Education (CE) registration has opened with more than 150 offerings in SFCC’s Spring Continuing Education Schedule. Print copies are available in the racks at Santa Fe Community College, the Santa Fe Higher Education Center and around town. Visit https://www.sfcc.edu/ce for tips on registering and to view the variety of offerings available for personal enrichment or to develop professional skills.

Spring CE classes begin in January. “It’s a great time to register for a class as part of your New Year’s Resolution,” CE Director Benjamin Lincoln said. “We’re delighted to partner with Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe at De Vargas Center where we will offer three new culinary classes taught by Santa Fe’s legendary chef, Johnny Vollertsen, known best as Chef Johnny Vee.” Chef Johnny Vee is featured on the catalog cover.

Lincoln added, “While we have many CE classes at the college, we’re also excited to continue our many popular classes with off-site partners such as Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, CHOMP Food Hall and Sky Railway. A highlight this spring will be an opportunity to attend the premiere of “Blue: Life and Legacy of George Rodrigue” on Sunday, March 2 at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado.”

Cook with Chef Johnny Vee

Chef Johnny Vee’s classes include: A Culinary Tour of France, A Culinary Tour of Spain and a High-Altitude Baking Workshop. He’ll lead the classes in the kitchen at Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe. A 10 percent discount at the shop is available at the completion of any of the classes.

Chef Johhny Vee began his career working in a variety of popular and famous New York City restaurants including Soho’s “Greenstreet,” Tribeca’s “Odeon” and Larry Forgione’s milestone “An American Place.” In 1985, Johnny was sought out by a company in Sydney to open an American-Style Restaurant and Cocktail Bar, a project that led to a chain of six Southwest cuisine restaurants in Australia and New Zealand called the “Arizona Bar and Grill.” After completing his final Arizona Bar and Grill location in New Zealand, he moved to Santa Fe.

Since his arrival in Santa Fe, the charismatic chef has had a distinguished career as an esteemed culinary instructor, caterer to celebrities, and as a popular food critic and culinary writer. He currently is a contributing writer to the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Pasatiempo.

Attend Film Premiere of “Blue: Life and Legacy of George Rodrigue”

The CE department has offered a variety of popular classes taught by Wendy Rodrigue, the widow of acclaimed artist George Rodrigue. Last fall, the SFCC Visual Arts Gallery featured the artist’s work in “Dream Big: The Art of George Rodrigue,” including his well-known Blue Dog canvases.

The CE department now offers the opportunity to attend the film premiere of “Blue: Life and Art of George Rodrigue,” on Sunday, March 2 in the grand ballroom of Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado.  The documentary is an intimate exploration of the iconic artist behind the Blue Dog series.  After viewing the documentary, participants will be part of a lively Q & A session with producer Jim Dotson, director Sean O’Malley and George Rodrigue’s widow, Wendy Rodrigue Magnus. There is also an option to attend a four-course dinner following the film showing.

Jim Dotson is a celebrated filmmaker and producer known for his compelling documentaries and cultural projects. His work includes “Gulf Aid: Concert for the Coast (2010),” which captured the resilience and solidarity of the Gulf Coast community through music; and “Fats Domino: Walkin’ Back to New Orleans (2008),” a tribute to the legendary musician’s influence on rock and roll. Dotson’s storytelling weaves together art, music, and history, creating impactful narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. Director Sean O’Malley brings more than two decades of work experience with his wife and partner, Jeannine O’Malley, through their production company, O’Malley Productions.

New classes by Sommelier Byron Rudolph will tempt your palate in the world of wine.  He will teach the following classes: “Tour the Wine Regions of France,” “Wine 101—Grape to Bottle to Nose to Taste,” “Champagne for Every Occasion” and “Taste and Share Wine like a Sommelier.” These fun and engaging classes will be in person at SFCC.

Learn how to safely operate a drone

R.J. Pieper offers drone instruction and skills in two new course offerings.The first class, “An Introduction to Drones,” will focus on the fundamentals. At the end of the class, students will be ready to take the

FAA TRUST test and will participate in a discovery flight. An intermediate course, “Drones at Work,” explores

the various applications of drones as a versatile tool, covering fields such as photography, video production,

agriculture, construction, surveying, and public safety.

Benjamin Lincoln, CE director said, “We’ve got a full range of classes to meet everyone’s needs. You can participate in classes during the day or join evening or weekend classes to fit your schedule. It’s great because you can attend a one-day class or a course that meets for several weeks.”

Academic Director of the Santa Fe Community College’s Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) program, Charlie Shultz, recently completed a 2-week Farmer-2-Farmer volunteer assignment in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The work was funded by the NGO, USAID. The assignment included delivering an intensive hydroponics workshop for agriculture extension agents and University students. A simplified hydroponics manual was also created for high school teachers to use with students with the goal of increasing interest in agriculture and other STEM related fields. Charlie’s talk discussed his work with rural Cambodian farmers and highlighted the wonders of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.

Fall 2024 Arts & Design newsletter now available

Academic Director of Art and Design Shane Talbot shared the Fall Art & Design the newsletter, which highlights accomplishments by SFCC faculty, staff and students. Santa Fe Regional Middle and High School Art Exhibition continues through Dec. 5

SFCC’s Visual Arts Gallery hosted the “Third Annual Santa Fe Regional Exhibition for High School and Middle School Artists” reception on September 24 and announced the winners of cash prizes. Congratulations to the winners and all the young people who submitted their work. Many exhibited their work for the first time in a public space.

The exhibition includes more than 100 pieces from the New Mexico School for the Arts, Capital High, Santa Fe High, Monte Del Sol and Milagro Middle School.
Cash prizes: Best of Show ($500), Outstanding Creative Merit ($200), Best Concept ($100), Dean’s Choice ($100) and Honorable Mention (2) $50. The prizes were given via the SFCC Foundation.

SFCC Library and Creative Writing program are presenting the Fall 2024 Writing Generation Series through November. Each author will read at an introductory session. The following week the author will engage the participants in a writing exercise/creative session. Attendees can go to any of the sessions by registering just once at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WriGenFall2024. Registrants will receive a Zoom link via email the morning of each event.

This series is about giving people time and inspiration to write, building community, amplifying New Mexico voices, and giving students across the globe the opportunity to join in this free online series.

Indigenous Peoples Day and Native American Heritage Month / Día de los Pueblos Indígenas y Mes de la Herencia de los Nativos Americanos

On October 11, SFCC President Rowley and PEDAC co-chairs sj Miller and Marcos Maez sent the following statement to the campus community:

Dear SFCC Community,

On this Indigenous Peoples Day, October 14, Santa Fe Community College stands in recognition and respect for the Indigenous peoples who have long stewarded the lands on which we live, learn, and grow. This day offers a moment for us all to honor the deep cultural heritage, history, and ongoing contributions of Native communities, both in New Mexico and across the nation.

We acknowledge the profound influence of Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and resilience in shaping our shared world. Indigenous Peoples Day also reminds us of the ongoing work required to address historical and current injustices faced by Native communities.

At SFCC, we remain committed to fostering an environment that values inclusivity, celebrates diversity, and supports the cultural rights and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples.

As we mark this important day, we invite our college community to engage in reflection, learning, and dialogue about the lasting impact of Indigenous peoples. Let us all recommit to strengthening our understanding, promoting cultural preservation, and working in solidarity with Indigenous nations for a future grounded in mutual respect and justice.

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, include “Native American Heritage Month,” “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month,” and Native Hawaiian Heritage Month.” The month is dedicated to uplifting, honoring, celebrating and centering the voices of Indigenous wisdom. and local knowledge and practices.

The Santa Fe Indigenous Center is sponsoring the Second Annual Honoring Native Nations Powwow on Monday, October 14, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., on the Santa Fe Plaza. The event welcomes Native nations to participate in a day of intertribal dancing and celebrating the rich diverse cultures of Native Nations. You are invited to bring your tribal flag for the Parade of Nations at noon. Guest drums are welcome. For more information see: https://santafeindigenouscenter.org.

Today, tomorrow and every day, we must honor the vibrant Indigenous cultures that continue to enrich our communities and beyond.

PEDAC’s Monthly Cultural Calendar

Artist Statement for Nina Mastrangelo “Containing Aspects of Dynafluxia”

What inspired the four dioramas in the foyer before the library?

“I am interested in the many ways to visually activate spaces. I was inspired to compare the glass cases in the foyer of the library to tabernacles or niches or storefronts that contain dioramas that surprise someone when walking by. At first they are hidden and blend in with the surroundings. There exist several things that can catch one’s eyes. Once noticed, the impression might stay and encourage more exploration. 

Using my study and experience in multimedia, applied arts, architecture, science, cartography, and education, I create artwork and installations that combine dynamism and contemplation. 

I’ve been working on a system I call Dynafluxia. This term is a combination of dynamic and flux or flow. Flux applies in several ways; it can be used to describe the experience of change, and it also refers to melting as in glass or glazes. Dynafluxia can also refer to the way the viewer can melt into the artwork with their eyes. By changing one’s viewpoint circumnavigating the 3D environment, the viewer sees the composition change in terms of shape, color, hue, and the play of positive and negative space. Different things line up. 

Each of the four niches is unique. Each watercolor box was inspired by the two fused glass pieces that are included into an integral part of the installation. I created models in order to design the large 4’ x 5’ watercolors that encase the foot deep niches. Making these pieces has inspired new steps I plan to take in creating future projects. 

I was fortunate to have feedback from staff and faculty and students here as I was completing this project.”
