SFCC Snapshots give insight into how our community thrives
We hope your first week of the fall semester was fantastic. It’s been a busy, but exciting time.
Those of you on SFCC’s Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram have been seeing a series called SFCC Snapshots. These stories from faculty, staff and students share how our community has persevered and stayed strong even in challenging times.

Also, as you might notice that each of the SFCC Snapshots has a button below where anyone can contribute to the SFCC Foundation Student Emergency Assistance Fund. Your donations will make a huge difference in a student’s life. Students continue to be faced with emergencies through this pandemic — funds can be used for books, rent, food and other needs to help a student succeed.

Campuswide Power Shutdowns scheduled for 9/3
In order for the Automotive Technologies Center facility to be connected to permanent power, the following campuswide power shutdown is scheduled.
Thursday, September 3 – 3:30 to 9:30 p.m.
3:30 p.m. OIT shutdown; 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. power shutdown; 9:30 p.m. OIT start
- F&O staff is coordinating power generation for essential services
- Remote technology services available during the shutdown
- Wi-Fi and network connectivity in offices/classrooms down
- The HEC will not be affected
Please contact Dobby Schmidt (x1226), Maintenance Manager, with Facilities & Operations if your facility requires coverage by a generator during the shutdowns.

SFCC, HEC, & Kids Campus closed on Labor Day, September 7
Santa Fe Community College, Kids Campus and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center to observe Labor Day Monday, September 7, 2020. No classes or services will be available. Wifi will remain available to students in the HEC parking lot.
WiFi may be available in the SFCC parking lot as well, but this has not been confirmed by security.
Dean Camilla Bustamante's story published on University of Vermont blog
Dean Camilla Bustamante, Ph.D., recently published “Querencia y Comida: Nuevo Mexicanx Tradition as Model for Food Resilience” in the University of Vermont’s blog.
It’s an excellent piece that concludes, “Community food traditions are threatened by imported food commodities and systems and the threat to community health prevails. As our traditional community food systems are challenged, so is identity. Knowledge of oneself and sense of community is necessary for mental and spiritual health, and when nature is part of our community, our physical health is a benefactor. The messages of our ancestors remain constant and the traditions contribute to the livelihood of the lands and its peoples.”
SFCC Film Open House gives prospective students a preview of classes and class formats
On August 18, the faculty of SFCC’s Film program held an online open house for potential students. It was a good way for the film program to discuss how classes would be taught and address some student questions and concerns. Teaching the trades and other traditionally “hands-on” classes in a socially distant world presented our faculty with many new challenges. To learn more about some of these programs and what SFCC classes will look like for students this Fall, tune into KSWV 810 AM & 99.9 FM on Mondays and Wednesday mornings from 8-8:30 a.m. starting this coming Monday, August 10. Featured programs include: Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Film, Solar and Sustainable Technologies, Alternative Fuels, Controlled Environment Agriculture and more.

EnergySmart COVID-19 class featured in SF New Mexican
Dillon Mullen of the Santa Fe New Mexican featured EnergySmart Academy and workforce training in the story, “COVID-19 course at SFCC gets national audience.”

Wallet Hub ranks SFCC #13 for top community colleges in nation
KSFR-radio announced on air last week that SFCC was ranked #13 in the nation by Wallet Hub.
We also saw that it was ranked as #1 in the state!
Wallet Hub looks at affordability, value and many other factors in preparing its rankings.
Census reporting deadline moved up to September 30
Why is the census important? New Mexico is currently undercounted. If New Mexico undercounts residents by only 1%, we would lose $780 Million Dollars. (https://www.icountnm.gov/why-is-the-census-important/)
Be counted! If you have received an invitation, respond using your Census ID.
If you haven’t received a census letter or paper questionnaire with your Census ID, wait to respond. Census workers will drop off paper questionnaires at your front door.
When people respond online or over the phone using their Census ID or mail back their completed paper questionnaire, we can get the best count of the community.
Gloria Ladson-Billings, Ph.D., keynote available to view
Faculty and staff were energized by Gloria Ladson-Billings, Ph.D., who delivered the keynote address, “Educating Past Pandemics,” for convocation on Aug. 13.
She spoke about the four pandemics we all are facing, lessons learned from history, academic achievement vs. student learning, cultural competence, the digital divide and much more. She highlighted her talk with a dynamic presentation on hip-hop as a cultural influence.

SFCC's phased Reopening Plan
In alignment with SFCC’s 2020 COVID-19 Strategic Plan, the “SFCC CARES: COVID-19 Readiness Plan” for fall semester 2020 emphasizes a smart and compassionate return to campus. The carefully measured approach will continue to balance the educational and health needs of our campus.
As circumstances stand today, our fall semester may not feel significantly different than our summer. The best way to ensure the safety of our community is to minimize our person-to-person contact.
The above statements are from the comprehensive SFCC: Cares Covid-19 Readiness Plan. The plan is a 58-page document.
The college began with the closure last March with Phase 0 and moved into Phase 1 at the beginning of the fall semester.

Capital Improvement Projects scheduled for July and August
We are excited to announce several upcoming Capital Improvement Projects scheduled to begin in July and August as follows:
August 3 to end of October (3 months)– Phase I Parking Lot Improvements to repave SFCC’s Main Lot, crack seal, fog and stripe Accessible Lot, Carpool Lot and TATC West Lot.
July 20 to November 20 (120 Days) – Roofing Upgrades for Main Campus
August 3 to November 3 (3 months) – Waste Water Treatment Plant Gravity Sewer line transfer to Ranchlands Utility & Irrigation Upgrades

Operation Bandana still needs help with mask making, phone calls, deliveries and more!
We recently spoke with the Nursing student duo Robin Carillo Ortiz and Erin Price of Operation Bandana NM and their main request was: We Need More Help With All Tasks.
They have returned as full-time nursing students. They are looking for other students or staff who could take on coordinating the operation this fall.

Campus Cupboard now delivers food Friday afternoons
Ed Worden of SFCC’s Campus Cupboard will be packing bags of food items for students. There will be pantry staples, snacks and canned goods. SFCC Students experiencing food insecurity are encouraged to take advantage of this new service.
Students should call 428-1775 on Friday afternoons (noon to 4 p.m.) and drive up to the West Wing entrance. Groceries will be delivered into their trunk or left outside for pickup. Please note: Deliver day has changed to Friday.
Campus Cupboard is distributing in collaboration with the Food Depot, and no one will be turned away.

Contract for a Better Tomorrow scholarship application open
The 2020-2021 application for the Domanica Foundation Contract for a Better Tomorrow (CBT) Scholarship Program is open!
CBT is a performance-based scholarship, which helps students complete and graduate from one of SFCC’s certificate or associate degree programs. CBT is for first-generation college students and is open to US Citizens, Permanent Residents, International and non-US students.

Apply for 2020-2021 SFCC and Foundation Scholarships
SFCC has state institutional and Foundation private scholarships available for new and returning students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year.
Scholarships are available for full and part-time students in all qualified areas of study including but not limited to: Business, Early Childhood, Engineering, Nursing, Computer Studies, Culinary and more.
There are scholarships for Native American students, Hispanic students and students with disabilities (must be registered with the SAS department), international and non-U.S. citizens.
Financial need, a minimum cumulative and term GPA of 2.50 and enrollment in at least 6 credit hours in a degree plan are required for most scholarships.

Flu shots for employees available 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 18
Employees can get a curbside flu shot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. Please drive up to the tents set up in the West Wing parking lot. Flu shots will be courtesy of Albertson’s Pharmacy. Visual Arts Gallery presents virtual exhibition
Santa Fe Community College’s Visual Arts Gallery will present a virtual online exhibition, “Painterly Objects,” featuring the work of SFCC sculpture faculty member John Boyce from August 28 through October 8. The exhibition features 21 pieces.
The SFCC Campus and the college’s Visual Arts Gallery are closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We really want to keep the community engaged with SFCC’s Visual Arts Gallery and the art department,” said Linda Cassel, Director of SFCC’s Art on Campus. “We followed extreme COVID-19 safety precautions in setting up the exhibition. The exhibition is stunning. We are excited to share images and a video for a virtual exhibition at https://www.sfcc.edu/painterly-objects/.”
The video of the exhibition was produced by SFCC Film Equipment and Lab Technician Ashley Martinez.
