SFCC is excited to celebrate and showcase displays of culture and hope, as demonstrated by members of our campus and the local community during the Culture of Hope event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.

We encourage you to reflect on what the theme of “Culture of Hope” means to you and invite you to take part in this free event, which is open to the public. Attendees are invited to wear traditional clothing.

This event is one of SFCC’s featured events for Community College Month. #CCMonth

Summer CE registration now open

Continuing Education’s Summer 2025 Course Catalog is now available online and in print. Visit SFCC’s Continuing Education and Contract Training web page to see the the class schedule. Printed copies are available at the college, area libraries and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center. The catalog features 51 new classes, covering everything from professional skill development to personal enrichment.

Director of Continuing Education Benjamin Lincoln said, “We’re thrilled to unveil the Summer 2025 Continuing Education Course Catalog filled with carefully curated classes to suit the community’s needs and interests. We invite lifelong learners to immerse themselves in creativity, culture and hands-on experiences. The summer offers a great opportunity to learn new skills and find joy in community connection.”

“We continue to expand our class offerings beyond the SFCC campus through our collaborations with our great community partners,” Lincoln added. “None of this would be possible without the invaluable support of SFCC’s partners, whose collaboration continues to expand our campus and enrich our offerings.”

Learn a new language

The SFCC CE Summer catalog cover features one of the CE Department’s popular Spanish language instructors, Consuelo Byrd. She and Silena Maffey-Meteer have shaped a robust Spanish language program that continues to be popular with those just learning the language and others wanting to further their skills. Other language class offerings this summer include instruction in French, Arabic and Japanese. This summer CE will offer the classes Beginning Japanese: (1 & 2) A Cultural Linguistic Journey taught by Niniam Williams.

Explore your creative spirit

This summer CE invites people to explore their creative side with many fine arts and crafts classes. New this summer is Chainmail Jewelry. In the class, participants will learn how to make chainmail jewelry and explore different patterns from the simple to the more complex. Participants will create one small piece such as a necklace or a bracelet. Instructor Nyal Tack, a dynamic young jeweler who is one of the founders of the SFCC Jewelry Collective, will lead the class. Another exciting addition is a class in clay exploration: Wheel Throwing and Raku taught by Kellogg Johnson is designed for those with prior experience working with clay and using a pottery wheel. Students will create pieces that undergo both a bisque firing and Raku firing – an ancient Japanese technique known for its dramatic and unpredictable results.

Get cooking

Chef Johnny Vee (Vollersten) is back with a selection of tasty cooking classes this summer. The popular chef and Pasatiempo writer will teach the Magic of Mole in the beautiful Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe in DeVargas Center. Students will be immersed in the cooking traditions of the Mexican town of Oaxaca and will explore its most famous dish – mole. The class will also create a complete menu of Mexican dishes including Sopa de Tortilla, Great Guacamole, Salsa Verde (two ways), Mole Negro, Mole Colaradito and green rice. All this will be topped off with the dessert, Tres Leches Cake. He’ll also teach additional classes: Chinese Take-out from Your Home, Culinary Tour of France Continued, a High-Altitude Baking Workshop and Top-Secrets for Grilling Meats.

Whether exploring the intricate art of metal weaving, shaping clay at the potter’s wheel, or learning a new language, SFCC’s CE courses provide a path to personal growth and creative exploration.

SFCC’s Library and Creative Writing program are presenting the free online Spring 2025 Writing Generation (Wri-Gen) Series, which began March 19. Each author reads at an introductory session. Alfredo Celedón Luján

Bio: Alfredo Celedón Luján is a career teacher. He has an MA/English and MLitt/Creative Nonfiction from the Bread Loaf School of English. He advocates for equity in the classroom. Alfredo is former President of the National Council of Teachers of English.

He is a proud member of the Chicanx/Latinx communities. He identifies as a Chicano writer. His writing amplifies familiarity and place. He has published stories, essays, and poems in various journals and books. He believes in the written and/or digital preservation of family cuentos/stories by capturing place, textures, sounds, and colloquial language. He is Norteño. He lives in Eldorado. He is from Nambé.

Session Description: In the creative session, Alfredo will give prompts that offer insights to self-identity, heritage, place, and the preservation of family vignettes through freewriting and childhood maps.

Dental Department went to Kids Campus for Give Kids a Smile Day

On Thursday, April 3, 2025, SFCC Dental Program staff, faculty and students provided oral health education, and La Familia Dental staff (Dr. Brendon Vahey and Dental Hygienists Sheryl & Tina) provided basic oral screenings. This event is part of the series of events to celebrate the national children’s oral health month and Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) day.

Through the ADA Foundation’s Give Kids A Smile program, launched nationally by the American Dental Association in 2003, more than 5 million undeserved children have received free oral health services. These free services are provided by approximately 10,000 dentists annually, along with 30,000 other dental team members.

Each year, here at SFCC, the dental department participates in this one-day event. Since many years, we expanded the Give Kids A Smile program and celebrated all spring semester.

Give Kids A Smile began in 2002 in St. Louis, Missouri. Each year Give Kids A Smile day is celebrated nationally on the first Friday in February. GKAS events are intended to be touch points for children who do not receive dental care, for whatever reason.

Medical Assisting is now accepting applications

Medical assistants are often the first point of contact for patients and play a key role in both administrative and clinical care. Their responsibilities range from scheduling appointments and maintaining records to assisting with exams, lab tests, and minor procedures. SFCC’s accredited Medical Assistant program provides comprehensive training in clinical, lab, and administrative skills, preparing students to pass the National Certification Exam and work in various healthcare settings as competent, entry-level professionals.

Dental Department outreach at Children’s Garden Montessori School

SFCC Dental Assisting students (Alexia and Samantha) and Dental faculty member Karla Martinez-Talavera provided oral health education to the 40 kids (0-5 years) at the Children’s Garden Montessori School on April 3. They played fun games and practiced brushing and flossing skills.

Meet Miss Indian World Kassie John at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, in SFCC Campus Center

Miss Indian World, Kassie John will make an appearance at SFCC at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Campus Center to share her story, answer questions, and take pictures with students, faculty, and staff. Miss Indian World’s story will inspire the SFCC community! Come out and join us. Refreshments provided.

Kassie John was crowned Miss Indian World 2024 at the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow last April and will be crowning the next Miss Indian World, April 26, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at Expo NM. Kassie, DINÈ (Navajo) is from Rock Point, Arizona.  Kassie, 25 years old, is a graduate of the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Multidisciplinary Design. She is a young community leader and role model; in addition, she is a business owner, graphic artist and dancer. Kassie has traveled this past year as an Ambassador for Native/Indigenous people as well as for the Gathering of Nations. Kassie invites everyone to the Gathering of Nations Powwow and the Miss Indian World Traditional Presentations at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Department of Dental Health gave 2,000 SFPS kids oral health education

SFCC’s Department of Dental Health served around 2,000 kids from kindergarten and first grades of Santa Fe Public Schools, by providing them FREE oral health education. Thanks to the American Dental Association and NM Dental Foundation for their support with the oral hygiene goody bags.

One of the Program Learning Outcomes of the Dental Assisting Certificate and AAS in Dental Health is to, “Demonstrate and apply knowledge of public health education, including the prevalence and incidence of oral diseases.” These activities were also part of Oral Health month and Give Kids a Smile Day [GKAS Day].

ESL tutor training offered online from 4 to 6 p.m. May 8 and in-person from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 and 10

Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe 12-hour training prepares volunteers to tutor adults in English as a Second Language (ESL). The ESL new tutor orientation will be presented online from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8.

The in-person training will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 9 and and Saturday May 10 at SFCC. A registration meeting and a two-hour follow-up workshop are required. Department of Dental Health celebrated National Dental Assistants Recognition Week

SFCC’s Department of Dental Health celebrated National Dental Assistants Recognition Week (March 2-8, 2025).

Dental Assistants Recognition Week (also known as DARW) is held the first full week in March every year and was designated by the American Dental Assistants Association as the perfect time to acknowledge and recognize the versatile, multi-talented member of your dental team. Dentists in the United States and Canada will celebrate by honoring their dental assistants for their various duties and helping them provide patients with quality dental care. The theme for 2025 was “Superheroes behind the Smiles” and highlights the essential role dental assistants play in ensuring exceptional patient care and enhancing the overall dental experience.

Dental assistants are a key part of the dental practice year-round and strengthen the entire practice while enhancing patient satisfaction. Dental assistants are committed to professional development and quality dental care.

FAFSA Open House from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16

Staff will be available to answer questions.

Financial Aid Department will host the next FAFSA Open House from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 in Room 611E. The public is welcome to attend the free drop-in events. Staff members will be available to answer questions as well as guide individuals and their families through the process of submitting the 2025-2026 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Federal student financial aid is evaluated based on the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Every student is required to complete a FAFSA for each academic year to be considered for federal or state financial aid.

SFCC Financial Aid Coordinator J. Andrew Arellano said, “We’re happy to help anyone in the community with the FAFSA form. Our team is particularly eager to work with prospective and returning students looking to enroll at SFCC. Most of our students are eligible for financial aid but often don’t recognize how important it is to fill out the FAFSA form in a timely fashion.”

Recommended items to have on hand:

• Student Social Security (SSN) number
• Driver’s license, if available
• For returning students, passwords to FAFSA login
• Parent(s) date of birth, SSN and email address
• Date parents were married, remarried, separated, divorced or widowed

Note: Both parent and student information should be used if the student is under 24 years old and not married or independent. SFCC offers dozens of scholarships. Regardless of your eligibility for aid determined by FASFA, you may be eligible for an SFCC Foundation scholarship. There are many grants also available.

Participate in Community College Month in April

SFCC is celebrating National Community College Month throughout April. The national observance celebrates the vital role that community colleges play in building the local workforce, the economy and in contributing to community vibrance. The public is encouraged to visit the campus for a variety of  Community College Month events.

SFCC President Becky Rowley, Ph.D., said, “At SFCC, we’re excited to celebrate Community College Month. This gives the college an opportunity to showcase everything we offer through a variety of open houses and events that highlight our mission statement: ‘Empower Students, Strengthen Community.’ We are here to serve the community and are ready to meet their needs.

“Throughout the college’s 40th anniversary year, I’ve heard from people of all generations about how SFCC is making a difference in their lives,” Rowley added. “Young parents are pursuing degrees they once thought were out of reach, thanks to the support and resources available on our campus. Working adults are reskilling or shifting their career focus through short-term training, certificates, or associate degrees. Others, including our community’s seniors, are embracing lifelong learning — telling me they are learning new languages, developing artistic skills, and participating in fitness classes ranging from yoga to pickleball.”

SFCC, as a participant of the National Community College Month, invites community members to share their personal stories on how Santa Fe Community College has changed their lives on social media using #SFCCNM, #SFCCProud, #CCMonth and #BestDecisionEver.

Rocio Rodriguez exhibition: ‘Mexican Rapunzel’ opens from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in Sculpture Hallway

On Exhibit: April 7-April 19, 2025

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 17, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Bio: Rocio Rodriguez was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and she is currently based in Santa Fe studying for a Fine Arts associate degree with a focus on sculpture at SFCC. Rocio uses canvas fabric and acrylic paint to create sculptures that adapt to the space. Rocio is an immigrant, she adapts to her context and her work behaves in a similar way. Her creatures capture the absence of the body and celebrates details that we take for granted. Folds of the skin or entangled hair are frequent themes in her work.

The installation at “Ripple Effect” (sculpture hallway in Visual Arts building) was custom for the space. Contact Director of Art on Campus Linda Cassel for more information.

SFCC to close for Spring Holiday from April 18-20

Santa Fe Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road, will remain open on Friday, April 18

SFCC will close for Spring Holiday from Friday, April 18, through Sunday, April 20. All campus facilities will be closed. No classes, activities or student services will be available. SFCC’s early childhood development center Kids Campus and the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center are included in the closure. The Santa Fe Higher Education Center (SFHEC), 1950 Siringo Road, will remain open on Friday, April 18.

All SFCC classes and activities will resume on Monday, April 21.

Throughout the year, SFCC offers many ways to stay notified about weather- and holiday-related delays, cancellations, closures and emergencies. While the college does notify the public of severe weather and emergency conditions through print, television and radio news outlets, additional information can be accessed quickly through the following:

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 17. The Registrar’s office is now accepting volunteers for the spring 2025 commencement (graduation ceremony) for multiple positions! CEA Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26

The Culinary Arts program will offer bite-sized treats from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Greenhouse tours every half hour. Epic Used Book Sale also returns!

Santa Fe Community College’s Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) program will host an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Trades and Advanced Technology Center (TATC) on Saturday, April 26. The public is invited to meet in the lobby of the TATC to begin the CEA Open House activities. Visitors can sample bite-sized treats prepared by Chef Jerry Dakan of the Culinary Arts Department from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. while learning about the CEA program.

Throughout the Open House, people can join a tour of the college’s 12,000-square-foot greenhouse that serves as a living laboratory for students to operate and manage various aquaponic and hydroponic production systems. This year the CEA students are having a plant sale with a large variety of herb and vegetable seedlings ready to transplant at your home. Also ongoing during the event is another Epic Used Book Sale. All books are priced at $1 and proceeds from the book and plant sale benefit the students in the SFCC Aquaponics and Hydroponics club. Both sales are sponsored in part by the Santa Fe Community College Foundation.

CEA Academic Director Charlie Shultz said, “This is a great time to tour the SFCC greenhouses. Our advanced semester Hydroponic and Aquaponic students are producing a variety of crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, Asian greens, peppers, herbs, lettuce, kale, algae and hemp in water-based production systems. People are often surprised to learn that worms compost all the greenhouse waste and that all the greenhouse energy is provided by the college’s solar array.”

Greenhouse tours will be offered each half hour, starting at 10:30 a.m., by SFCC-CEA students and staff. The plant and book sales will be ongoing during the 10 a.m.-2 p.m. event. Come early for best selections. Food samples prepared by the SFCC-Culinary students, faculty and staff will be available from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at no cost.

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is a technology-based approach to food production and farming that allows farmers/growers/food producers and agri-tech businesses to optimize their growing conditions and resource management. Students participate in growing and research activities in both a smaller geodesic greenhouse, as well as our model 12,000ft² off-grid greenhouse.

The purpose of SFCC’s CEA program is to revitalize agricultural traditions and develop sustainable growing systems, methods and practices in controlled environment greenhouses using aquaponics and hydroponics that support local food systems and promote economic development through food innovation and entrepreneurship.

SFCC’s CEA program offers students the opportunity to earn any or all of the following credentials:

SFCC and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide open appointments for tax assistance and preparation February 3 through April 15

Appointments required for tax preparation

SFCC and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will offer in-person tax assistance and preparation by appointment. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. The services are provided by volunteers from the community. Appointments can be made now at https://www.sfcc.edu/taxaide. Tax preparation services will be offered in rooms 408 and 410 at SFCC’s main campus, 6401 Richards Avenue.

The State Coordinator of AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program Gene Varela said, “We’re excited to partner again with Santa Fe Community College to offer this free service through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. We require appointments, so we can schedule our volunteers. Tax preparation services are being offered in English and Spanish in classrooms near the spacious Campus Center.”

All appointments can be made online at https://www.sfcc.edu/taxaide. Appointments, which are expected to be quickly filled, will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Monday, February 3 and ending Monday, April 15. Individuals who do not have internet access or those who need more information, please leave a voicemail at 505-428-1780 beginning February 3. Volunteers will return calls when possible. Multiple year returns may also require multiple appointments.

Tax-Aide services are not available during any holidays observed by SFCC including Spring Break from March 24 through March 30. Tax-Aide services will also observe all SFCC closures and weather delays. Appointments affected by weather delays or closures will be rescheduled. Intake and other forms may be picked up at the site during tax preparation hours or you may download these forms from https://www.sfcc.edu/taxaide. Please arrive 15-30 minutes early for your appointment.

Please note: Individual appointments must be made for each member of a household or group that is filing a return. For taxpayers who are married and filing jointly, both individuals must be present to sign documents. Exceptions may be made only when a spouse is unable to be present due to health issues.

What you need to bring:

• Copy of prior year return.
• Driver’s License or State ID of the primary filers.
• Social Security Card or ITIN Letters for all taxpayers and dependents.
• Social Security Year End Statement.
• Bank information (routing and account numbers) for direct deposit or direct debit.
• Income documents: W-2s; 1099s for retirement income or self-employment; interest, dividend, capital gains or brokerage statements; Unemployment (form 1099-G); gambling wins (form W2-G and related loss documentation).
• Individuals eligible for State/County Rebates or Credits – bring 2024 property tax bill(s) or rent information, out-of-pocket medical expenses (no over-the-counter or medical cannabis-related expenses) and other household income.
• Supporting documents for itemized deductions or credits: childcare, college, or vocational training information (1098-T), medical expenses not covered by insurance – including mileage, charity donations, property tax bills or receipts and mortgage interest paid.
• Self-employed Income and Expenses Documentation: 1099 NEC or other income, employment-related expenditures, business miles.  
• Market Place insurance documents (1095-A)
• IRS Identity Theft PIN (IPPIN) letter for taxpayers and/or dependents.

The AARP Foundation Tax Aide Program cannot prepare returns that include out of scope items, such as:

• Married individuals who file separately.
• Rental income.
• Self-employment returns with expenses of more than $35,000 or more, home office deduction, employees, inventory or operating loss.
• Royalty income with associated expenses.
• Solar credits.
• Casualty loss.

NibANNi Inc. and TalentNomics Inc. are collaborating with Santa Fe Community College and Foto Forum Santa Fe to sponsor two scholarships worth $500 for books and learning materials for women students attending SFCC.

They announce an empowering new scholarship opportunity available to Women Student Photographers that are current students at SFCC enrolled in the Photography program. To apply, please submit by email to sage.paisner@sfcc.edu three to six photographs with an artist statement and short biography for consideration. Each image should be formatted as a JPEG file no larger than 1200 pixels on the long dimension. Please make sure that each file is no larger than 2Mb. (Hint: use compression). Filenames should include your name so judges can easily match a file to your application in case it gets separated. ex: Jane_Doe_1.jpg For each image, please provide the Title, Dimensions in inches, and Price. Deadline For Entries is April 18, 2025. Upon entry, all applications will be reviewed by a jury of esteemed artists who will select the scholarship winners. Jared Weiss exhibition opening Saturday April 19 at Iconik Lupe

Jared Weiss, Program Head of Drawing and Painting is having an exhibition “Portraits” at Iconic Lupe, 314 S. Guadalupe, Santa Fe, presented by Curate Santa Fe (curatesanta.com). Opening from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 19. The show runs through June 10.

Dr. Aamna Nayyar selected by ADEA to update ADEA Compendium of Curriculum Guidelines

Dr. Aamna Nayyar, Director of the Department of Dental Health, has been selected by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) to join the year-long national project about updating the current ADEA compendium of Curriculum Guidelines for the Allied Dental Education Programs for 2026. She is actively working with the teams specifically chosen to address the Dental Materials and Dental Radiology portions for the Dental Assisting curriculum of the compendium.

To be considered for this project one must be an allied dental program director or faculty member, be a member of the ADEA, have at least five years teaching experience, and have proven expertise in the content area of interest. FYI… the ADEA Compendium is updated every ten years. It guides dental education programs by establishing standards for student education, by informing new program developers and educators about the required course content. It also guides the current programs

to improve and stay up to date. The compendium fosters teamwork between dental professionals and other health workers by establishing a uniform standard of competencies, and it helps other health fields know what is important in dental education.

Dr. sj Miller to give Panel Presidential Address at the American Educational Research Association conference

Dr. sj Miller will participate with other distinguished experts in an Invited Presidential Address at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual conference. The address is titled: Challenging Anti-Trans Politics: Fighting back through Intersectionalities.

The AERA is an International Educational Organization that is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results.

It has more than 25,000 members of faculty, researchers, graduate students, and other distinguished professionals in education research.

The presentation will be held on April 24, 2025 in Denver.

SFCC team presents on Community and Corporate Partnership at LERN Leadership Conference

Associate Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Nicholas Wernicki and Director of Continuing Education Benjamin Lincoln presented at the 2025 LERN Leadership Conference, held in San Antonio in March. Their presentation, “A Case Study: Santa Fe Community College Community and Corporate Partnership,” was part of a series of sessions highlighting innovative practices in lifelong learning and continuing education.

In their session, Wernicki and Lincoln shared insights into a strategic initiative launched in 2023 by SFCC’s Continuing Education department. The initiative was designed to deepen engagement with community and corporate partners by integrating them into both new and existing continuing education and enrichment courses. The results have been impressive—expanding the reach and increasing the revenue of CE programs. Notably, off-campus partnership classes now average nearly twice the size of SFCC’s typical CE courses.

OER Grants for Faculty

The SFCC OER Committee is excited to announce the next round of Open Educational Resources (OER) Grants, now open to all faculty and adjunct faculty. These grants have been developed to support faculty in reducing textbook costs for students while enhancing the relevance and quality of course materials. Faculty can use funding to redesign courses, enhance existing content, or create entirely new instructional materials.

Grant Opportunities

• Course Redesign or Course Enhancement: Funding for significant course modifications or enhancements using OER.
• Special Projects: Funding for innovative projects such as writing textbooks, creating new course materials, and developing instructional videos or images. Proposals beyond traditional course redesigns are highly encouraged.

Key Dates:

• Notification of Awards: March 21, 2025

SFCC’s Workforce Training seeks part-time Microsoft Office Instructor

The Workforce Training Division at SFCC is seeking a dynamic part-time Microsoft Office Instructor to provide high-quality training on Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The instructor will deliver training sessions to groups throughout Santa Fe and surrounding areas, ensuring that participants acquire the necessary skills to use these tools efficiently and effectively.

Requirements:

• Have your own reliable transportation and able to travel to customer locations in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Albuquerque to deliver the trainings.
• Availability to work Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. approximately 18-20 hours per month.
• Willingness to become a certified Microsoft Office Instructor. We will pay for your study time and to take the online exams.
• Prior experience teaching or instructing groups of varying skill levels is highly preferred.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain technical concepts in a simple, easy-to-understand manner.
• Ability to adapt teaching methods to the needs of different learners.
• Patience, adaptability, and a passion for teaching.
• Hourly teaching rate is $125/hour.

Massage Therapy program appointments for Swedish-Therapeutic student massages available through May 13

SFCC’s Massage Therapy program offers Swedish-Therapeutic student massage appointments. Appointments are available March 17 through May 13. Potential clients can schedule an appointment by creating an account at https://sfcc.timetap.com/.

Massage clients should be free of any chronic health concerns. See additional information at the registration site. There is a $35 fee for 60-minute massages. Individuals are limited to one session per week. All appointments will be in the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center.

Massage Therapy program lead Julianna Santillanes said, “We’re excited to offer our student Massage Therapy Clinic sessions to the public. Appointments fill quickly, so I encourage people to schedule as soon as they can.”

Here are details about this semester’s clinics:

• $35 for 60-minute Swedish-Therapeutic student massage
• Monday and Tuesday appointments: 1:15, 3 and 4:45 p.m.
• Friday appointments: 9:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.

SFCC’s Massage Therapy program is now in its fifth year. In addition to the program in traditional deep tissue and Swedish-Therapeutic massage, SFCC’s program expanded this year to offer a Thai Massage program. The students studying Thai Massage will be offering Thai massage clinics in June.

East Wing Eatery Spring 2025 Hours of Operation

Chef Milton Villarrubia announces, “SFCC’s East Wing Eatery is a class where students learn about day-to-day operations of a cafe. The East Wing Eatery is a culinary classroom that looks like a cafe, and student schedules and availability dictate our hours of operation. Attend a film premiere of “Blue: Life and Art of George Rodrigue”

Dozens of new classes offered on campus, 6401 Richards Avenue, and at partner locations

SFCC’s Continuing Education (CE) registration has opened with more than 150 offerings in SFCC’s Spring Continuing Education Schedule. Print copies are available in the racks at Santa Fe Community College, the Santa Fe Higher Education Center and around town. Spring CE classes begin in January. “It’s a great time to register for a class as part of your New Year’s Resolution,” CE Director Benjamin Lincoln said. “We’re delighted to partner with Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe at De Vargas Center where we will offer three new culinary classes taught by Santa Fe’s legendary chef, Johnny Vollertsen, known best as Chef Johnny Vee.” Chef Johnny Vee is featured on the catalog cover.

Lincoln added, “While we have many CE classes at the college, we’re also excited to continue our many popular classes with off-site partners such as Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, CHOMP Food Hall and Sky Railway. A highlight this spring will be an opportunity to attend the premiere of “Blue: Life and Legacy of George Rodrigue” on Sunday, March 2 at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado.”

Cook with Chef Johnny Vee

Chef Johnny Vee’s classes include: A Culinary Tour of France, A Culinary Tour of Spain and a High-Altitude Baking Workshop. He’ll lead the classes in the kitchen at Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe. A 10 percent discount at the shop is available at the completion of any of the classes.

Chef Johhny Vee began his career working in a variety of popular and famous New York City restaurants including Soho’s “Greenstreet,” Tribeca’s “Odeon” and Larry Forgione’s milestone “An American Place.” In 1985, Johnny was sought out by a company in Sydney to open an American-Style Restaurant and Cocktail Bar, a project that led to a chain of six Southwest cuisine restaurants in Australia and New Zealand called the “Arizona Bar and Grill.” After completing his final Arizona Bar and Grill location in New Zealand, he moved to Santa Fe.

Since his arrival in Santa Fe, the charismatic chef has had a distinguished career as an esteemed culinary instructor, caterer to celebrities, and as a popular food critic and culinary writer. He currently is a contributing writer to the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Pasatiempo.

Attend Film Premiere of “Blue: Life and Legacy of George Rodrigue”

The CE department has offered a variety of popular classes taught by Wendy Rodrigue, the widow of acclaimed artist George Rodrigue. Last fall, the SFCC Visual Arts Gallery featured the artist’s work in “Dream Big: The Art of George Rodrigue,” including his well-known Blue Dog canvases.

The CE department now offers the opportunity to attend the film premiere of “Blue: Life and Art of George Rodrigue,” on Sunday, March 2 in the grand ballroom of Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado.  The documentary is an intimate exploration of the iconic artist behind the Blue Dog series.  After viewing the documentary, participants will be part of a lively Q & A session with producer Jim Dotson, director Sean O’Malley and George Rodrigue’s widow, Wendy Rodrigue Magnus. There is also an option to attend a four-course dinner following the film showing.

Jim Dotson is a celebrated filmmaker and producer known for his compelling documentaries and cultural projects. His work includes “Gulf Aid: Concert for the Coast (2010),” which captured the resilience and solidarity of the Gulf Coast community through music; and “Fats Domino: Walkin’ Back to New Orleans (2008),” a tribute to the legendary musician’s influence on rock and roll. Dotson’s storytelling weaves together art, music, and history, creating impactful narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. Director Sean O’Malley brings more than two decades of work experience with his wife and partner, Jeannine O’Malley, through their production company, O’Malley Productions.

Sample new wine classes

New classes by Sommelier Byron Rudolph will tempt your palate in the world of wine.  He will teach the following classes: “Tour the Wine Regions of France,” “Wine 101—Grape to Bottle to Nose to Taste,” “Champagne for Every Occasion” and “Taste and Share Wine like a Sommelier.” These fun and engaging classes will be in person at SFCC.

Learn how to safely operate a drone

R.J. Pieper offers drone instruction and skills in two new course offerings.The first class, “An Introduction to Drones,” will focus on the fundamentals. At the end of the class, students will be ready to take the FAA TRUST test and will participate in a discovery flight. An intermediate course, “Drones at Work,” explores the various applications of drones as a versatile tool, covering fields such as photography, video production, agriculture, construction, surveying, and public safety.

Benjamin Lincoln, CE director said, “We’ve got a full range of classes to meet everyone’s needs. You can participate in classes during the day or join evening or weekend classes to fit your schedule. It’s great because you can attend a one-day class or a course that meets for several weeks.”

Academic Director of the Santa Fe Community College’s Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) program, Charlie Shultz, recently completed a 2-week Farmer-2-Farmer volunteer assignment in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The work was funded by the NGO, USAID. The assignment included delivering an intensive hydroponics workshop for agriculture extension agents and University students. A simplified hydroponics manual was also created for high school teachers to use with students with the goal of increasing interest in agriculture and other STEM related fields. Charlie’s talk discussed his work with rural Cambodian farmers and highlighted the wonders of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.

Bio:  Jake Skeets (he/him) is the author of “Eyes Bottle Dark with a Mouthful of Flowers,” winner of the National Poetry Series, American Book Award, Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and Whiting Award. His work has appeared widely in journals and magazines such as Poetry, The New York Times Magazine, and The Paris Review. Other honors include an NEA Grant for Arts Projects, a Mellon Projecting All Voices Fellowship, and the 2023-2024 Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi. He is from the Navajo Nation and teaches at the University of Oklahoma.
