If you are wondering if we can provide support for a subject not listed here, please call the Tutoring Center front desk at 505-428-1260 or contact the Coordinator, Selah Winston, at selah.winston@sfcc.edu or 505-428-1055.

Whether meeting online or in-person, it is important that you arrive at your session with your assignment and your questions about the material. Prior to an online session, your tutor might reach out to you via email and request additional information to prepare for your meeting.

You can expect to guide your session by asking your tutor questions and expressing your needs. Your tutor will look over your assignment and any work you bring to the session. You and your tutor may not get to everything within the 50-minute session and might just focus on a single section or area that represents the whole assignment or task. Your tutor will not do your work for you, give you the answers, or edit your paper. Instead, your tutor will help you find your own answers to move forward outside of the session by asking questions, suggesting strategies, providing resources, and facilitating critical and analytical thinking through active discussion. Your tutor’s goal is to help you learn skills that make you a better student and life-long learner.

Tutoring is supplemental to online classroom instruction. Tutoring will not be provided to help students learn prerequisite skills if they have not completed appropriate prerequisite courses.

One thing to remember about tutors is that although they can help you succeed, they are not required to know the answers to all your questions. Sometimes they will send you back to your instructor for clarification.

SFCC students who are currently enrolled in credit classes are eligible to receive tutoring. Many types of SFCC students use tutoring services. Many students who come to the Center are already doing well in their classes and want to do better. Some students are struggling or falling behind and are looking for support to catch up. All are welcome!

Depending on tutor availability and available resources, we are sometimes able to offer tutoring to students or other individuals who are not current SFCC students. SFCC students are prioritized in terms of availability, but if you have a question about non-SFCC related tutoring, contact Selah Winston, Coordinator, at selah.winston@sfcc.edu or 505-428-1055.

The Tutoring Center offers in-person tutoring on an appointment and walk-in basis, as well as online appointments through Zoom. In-person and online appointments can be scheduled through our Bookings page linked here: Tutoring Center. Simply select your subject, a time and day that works for you, and the type of appointment you want (In-person or online). You will receive an email confirmation after scheduling your appointment.

When booking, please pay attention if the tutor’s name includes “In-Person Only” or “Online Only” to ensure you book with an appropriate tutor for your chosen modality.

At your appointment time, either come to the Tutoring Center for in-person appointments or click on your tutor’s name in your Bookings confirmation email to join the Zoom meeting with your tutor. If you have trouble accessing the link, email your tutor or contact Selah Winston, Coordinator, at selah.winston@sfcc.edu or 505-428-1055 or call the front desk at 505-428-1260.

Additionally, the Tutoring Center offers asynchronous tutoring through Brainfuse tutoring that is available 24/7 to SFCC students. Each Canvas course homepage includes a link to “Brainfuse Online Tutoring” where students can access online tutoring at any time.

Each SFCC student is allowed a maximum of 2 tutoring appointments (appointments are 50 minutes each) per week per course. If you need or want more than 2 appointments in a week for a course, you are welcome to come as a walk-in to the Center. If a tutor is available, they can work with you beyond those 2 appointments. Students may not receive tutoring for the same course for more than 2 semesters.

No show policy: If you do not show up to a tutoring appointment without any prior notice on more than 3 occasions, you may have the privilege to make appointments on your own through Bookings revoked. You will still be allowed to make appointments by calling the Tutoring Center front desk at 505-428-1260 or the Tutoring Center Coordinator, Selah Winston, at 505-428-1055. If you make any appointments through Bookings without prior approval, they will automatically be cancelled. Reinstating your access to Bookings will be considered if the situation improves and the no shows cease.

Our reasoning for this no-show policy is to respect the time and effort of our tutors, as well as ensure that other students will have equal access to appointment times that may otherwise be wasted.

Our tutors recognize the complex challenges facing our students and are committed to helping you succeed. To get the most out of tutoring services, you should be flexible, schedule your appointments early, respond promptly to emails, and show up for your Zoom sessions or in-person appointments on time.
