2026 KATIE BESSER STUDENT AWARDS
Please consider entering this school year’s Katie Besser Student Awards for writing and art contest. Categories include image/photography, fiction, poetry creative non-fiction, academic essay, en español (any genre), and instructor nominated. Especially consider submitting in the often-underrepresented categories of art, academic essay and en español (any genre).
If any of your pieces are chosen, you will receive monetary prizes (i.e. gift cards), you’ll be eligible to win the SFCC Foundation Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship, your pieces will be published in our annual anthology called Accolades, and you will have the chance to share your work at our celebratory reading at Meow Wolf!
To submit, you must be enrolled in at least 3 credits, written submissions should be no more than 5 typed pages, images/photographs should be submitted as jpgs or pdfs, you can send up to 6 submissions total, and please don’t put your name on the pieces themselves. Unfortunately, SFCC staff are not eligible.
To enter, email submissions from your student email account to Genevieve Betts (genevieve.betts@sfcc.edu) and include your name, titles & categories of your pieces, your phone number, and your A#. The deadline is March 1st, so if you’re not planning to submit something right away, please put this date in your calendar. Happy submitting.
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: ETHICAL USE OF GENERATIVE AI IN LEARNING
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini are transforming how we learn, study, and create. At SFCC we believe in using these tools to enhance learning as students develop their skills and competencies. Our Generative AI committee invites SFCC student to share best practices for using AI ethically and effectively in their academic journey. This is your opportunity to showcase how AI can support learning while maintaining integrity, creativity and person effort. Students can submit proposals for 5–10-minute presentation (video, slides, or live) that highlight practical examples, reflections, and tips for responsible AI use. CAMPUS CUPBOARD MEAL KITS
The Campus Cupboard is excited to announce Cook Kits! Everything you need to make a nourishing, easy to prepare meal, packed in one bag and ready to take home. Each Cook Kit includes all the ingredients and a simple recipe to help you create a delicious dish with minimal stress and maximum flavor. Designed with students and families in mind, these kits make cooking affordable, accessible, and fun. A new cook kit will be available in late October. Check back to find out the exact date. Good food shouldn’t be complicated. Cook Kits are limited in number, and will be first come, first served.

CHILDCARE- MAKE SURE YOU’RE ON THE KIDS CAMPUS WAITLIST
Are you in need of childcare? When a spot becomes available at the Kids Campus, students get priority placement. Kids campus wants to support student parents and hopes that those needing childcare will get on the waitlist. Children of degree-seeking SFCC students, SFCC employees, and full-time students at the Higher Education Center are prioritized for placement to support a two-generation philosophy of education at the college. FREE DIAPERS AVAILABLE THROUGH DIAPER DEPOT AT SFCC EXCHANGE
SFCC students, faculty, staff, and community members can now receive a free monthly supply of diapers and wipes—thanks to a new partnership between the SFCC Exchange and Food Depot’s Diaper Depot. Sizes range from newborn to size 8. FINANCIAL WELL-BEING AND LITERACY COURSE
Student affairs has launched a Financial Well-being and Literacy course to help our students ensure they are on a path to financial well-being and making good choices about their money and their future. Nusenda and SFCC have a co-branded Financial Wellness website with lots of useful information and tools: https://santafecc.teachbanzai.com/wellness. FREE FOOD AND SNACKS
The Campus Cupboard (Room LL305, lower level of the West Wing) offers free groceries and snacks to the SFCC community. You can shop for groceries once a week and grab up to two snacks a day. The Campus Cupboard is open from 8:15 am to 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday when campus is open. The Exchange also has kitchen items, clothing, and diaper program enrollment. 1) Are you currently enrolled in this semester and are experiencing some financial challenges? Have you experienced a recent emergency and need just a little help? Apply today through the Student Emergency Fund. The application can be found on your MySFCC page und Resources (Emergency Assistance Fund). Applications are reviewed frequently, and funds are directly awarded to your account. (The funds cannot cover the cost of tuition or books.)
2) Did you know that you may be eligible for FREE GRANT MONEY? Have you completed your Free Application for Federal Student Ais (FASFSA). If not, it’s easy, apply today at www.fafsa.gov . TOASTMASTERS OPEN HOUSE
Monday, Oct. 20. from 11 a.m. to noon at the HEC (Room 234).
The event will feature the 1997 Toastmasters World Champion speaking live via Zoom from Hawaii. Although this isn’t an SFCC-sponsored event, it may be of interest to students who want to develop public speaking or leadership skills, particularly those in Business or Communication-related programs. It’s also a good chance to learn about Toastmasters.
USED BOOK SALE FOR CEA PROGRAMS

WIN PROJECT
The WIN project employs four Navigators who are actively working to recruit individuals who are unemployed or underemployed or are looking to skill up. Benson is currently assigned to SFCC. WIN Navigators focus is to support low-income individuals, people of color, and people recovering from substance use disorders or those who have been incarcerated to place them into training programs, and connect them with services, resources, employers, and further training to support their success.
