2026 KATIE BESSER STUDENT AWARDS

Please consider entering this school year’s Katie Besser Student Awards for writing and art contest.  Categories include image/photography, fiction, poetry creative non-fiction, academic essay, en español (any genre), and instructor nominated. Especially consider submitting in the often-underrepresented categories of art, academic essay and en español (any genre).

If any of your pieces are chosen, you will receive monetary prizes (i.e. gift cards), you’ll be eligible to win the SFCC Foundation Richard Bradford Memorial Creative Writing Scholarship, your pieces will be published in our annual anthology called Accolades, and you will have the chance to share your work at our celebratory reading at Meow Wolf!

To submit, you must be enrolled in at least 3 credits, written submissions should be no more than 5 typed pages, images/photographs should be submitted as jpgs or pdfs, you can send up to 6 submissions total, and please don’t put your name on the pieces themselves.  Unfortunately, SFCC staff are not eligible.

To enter, email submissions from your student email account to Genevieve Betts (genevieve.betts@sfcc.edu) and include your name, titles & categories of your pieces, your phone number, and your A#.  The deadline is March 1st, so if you’re not planning to submit something right away, please put this date in your calendar.  Happy submitting. 

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: ETHICAL USE OF GENERATIVE AI IN LEARNING

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini are transforming how we learn, study, and create.  At SFCC we believe in using these tools to enhance learning as students develop their skills and competencies.  Our Generative AI committee invites SFCC student to share best practices for using AI ethically and effectively in their academic journey.  This is your opportunity to showcase how AI can support learning while maintaining integrity, creativity and person effort.  Students can submit proposals for 5–10-minute presentation (video, slides, or live) that highlight practical examples, reflections, and tips for responsible AI use.  Email proposals to sarah.hood@sfcc.edu

by Oct. 2, with a draft presentation due Oct. 24.  Selected presentation will be shared during the week of Nov. 17.  Please see the attachment for more information on what we’re looking for, some suggested topics, and additional details.

CAMPUS CUPBOARD MEAL KITS

The Campus Cupboard is excited to announce Cook Kits! Everything you need to make a nourishing, easy to prepare meal, packed in one bag and ready to take home.  Each Cook Kit includes all the ingredients and a simple recipe to help you create a delicious dish with minimal stress and maximum flavor.  Designed with students and families in mind, these kits make cooking affordable, accessible, and fun. A new cook kit will be available in late October. Check back to find out the exact date.  Good food shouldn’t be complicated.  Cook Kits are limited in number, and will be first come, first served.

Check out SFCC’s Career Coach your one stop shop for job postings, resume writing, and career exploration.  You can quickly apply for any job posted in Career Coach.  You can also take a career assessment that identifies our primary areas of strength and provides suggestions for different career paths to explore. 

CELEBRATE MEDICAL ASSISTANT AND RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS WEEK

October 20-24, 2025/ Student Presentations : October 22, 11:30a.m. – 1:00p.m. at the Bio Wall.

Join us in recognizing the incredible dedications and impact of SFCC’s Medical Assistant and Respiratory Therapy students and professionals!  From the exam room to the emergency room, these essential healthcare workers make a difference every day through their skill, care, and compassion.  On Wednesday, October 22, students will present projects that showcase the essential work of medical assistants and respiratory therapists.  Stop by to lean more about these vital professions and show your support for their hard work and commitment to patient care.

CHILDCARE- MAKE SURE YOU’RE ON THE KIDS CAMPUS WAITLIST 

Are you in need of childcare?  When a spot becomes available at the Kids Campus, students get priority placement.  Kids campus wants to support student parents and hopes that those needing childcare will get on the waitlist.  Children of degree-seeking SFCC students, SFCC employees, and full-time students at the Higher Education Center are prioritized for placement to support a two-generation philosophy of education at the college.  Visit the Kids Campus website for more information.  Student receive a 10% discount on the cost of Kids Campus and NM Early Childhood Education and Care Development offers Child Care Assistance to income-eligible students.

Fall 2025 CAREER AND TRANSFER WORKSHOPS

FREE DIAPERS AVAILABLE THROUGH DIAPER DEPOT AT SFCC EXCHANGE

SFCC students, faculty, staff, and community members can now receive a free monthly supply of diapers and wipes—thanks to a new partnership between the SFCC Exchange and Food Depot’s Diaper Depot.  Sizes range from newborn to size 8.  To participate, enroll at the Campus Cupboard (Room LL305) or if you already have a CC#, email joanna.johnston@sfcc.edu with your information   Please see attached flyer. 

FINANCIAL WELL-BEING AND LITERACY COURSE

Student affairs has launched a Financial Well-being and Literacy course to help our students ensure they are on a path to financial well-being and making good choices about their money and their future. Nusenda and SFCC have a co-branded Financial Wellness website with lots of useful information and tools:  https://santafecc.teachbanzai.com/wellness.  You can access the course by clicking on the “Financial Literacy” button on the Welcome section of the MySFCC homepage.

FREE FOOD AND SNACKS

The Campus Cupboard (Room LL305, lower level of the West Wing) offers free groceries and snacks to the SFCC community.  You can shop for groceries once a week and grab up to two snacks a day.  The Campus Cupboard is open from 8:15 am to 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday when campus is open.  The Exchange also has kitchen items, clothing, and diaper program enrollment.  No student ID is required—just a quick 5-minute enrollment.  Menstrual products are provided by Free Flow New Mexico.  Questions?  Email cupboard@sfcc.edu or call 505-428-1775

FREE MONEY    

1) Are you currently enrolled in this semester and are experiencing some financial challenges?  Have you experienced a recent emergency and need just a little help?  Apply today through the Student Emergency Fund.  The application can be found on your MySFCC page und Resources (Emergency Assistance Fund).  Applications are reviewed frequently, and funds are directly awarded to your account. (The funds cannot cover the cost of tuition or books.)

2)  Did you know that you may be eligible for FREE GRANT MONEY?  Have you completed your Free Application for Federal Student Ais (FASFSA).  If not, it’s easy, apply today at www.fafsa.gov .  Even if you are taking a few classes, you may still be eligible.  Form more information, please contact our financial aid office at 505-428-1268.

  2. Friday, October 24, 2nd 8-week session, Last day to drop without a grade and obtain a refund
  3. Friday, October 24, 2nd 8-week session, Last day to Petition to Graduate and participate in the commencement ceremony.
  4. Friday, October 31, 2nd 8-week session, Last day to change audit/credit status
  5. Monday, November 3, Priority Registration for Spring 2026 begins
  6. Tuesday, November 4, Registration for Spring 2026
  7. Students will not be dropped for non-payment.  If you are currently enrolled, you must pay in full or make payment arrangements with the cashier’s office.  Contact them today at cashiers@sfcc.edu.

LIBRARY EXPANDS HOURS

Beginning Sept. 15, the library is open longer hours for the semester:  Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Weekend hours are back!!

ON DEMAND STATEMENTS NOW AVAILABLE

SFCC HAS ADDED A NEW FEATURE

You can download a statement of your account at any time you would like.  The statement will include:

  • Amount owing for the term (could also include balances from other terms owing
  • Account Activity for term chosen showing Charges/Credits/Payments
  • Schedule of classes register for
  • Buttons to print or make a payment

Below are instructions on how to view the statement.

  1. Log into your student portal at http://www.my.sfcc.edu/  
  2. Click the Pay Now/1098T button
  3. Enter your SFCC email address
  4. In the Statements box you can click ON Demand Statement
  5. In the drop-down box click on the Term needed

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AVAILABLE NOW

Pay for college with scholarships.  One simple application puts you in consideration for State institutional and Foundation private scholarships.  Scholarships are available for new and returning, part time and full-time students to help pay for college for the upcoming academic year.  Scholarships are also available for second generation colleges.  For more information and to apply go tohttps://www.sfcc.edu/offices/financial-aid/  If you have questions or need assistance, email the Financial Aid Office at finaid@sfcc.edu from your SFCC student email account.  Make sure to include your Student ID number in the email.

STATE OF NEW MEXICO INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

TOASTMASTERS OPEN HOUSE
Monday, Oct. 20. from 11 a.m. to noon at the HEC (Room 234).

The event will feature the 1997 Toastmasters World Champion speaking live via Zoom from Hawaii.  Although this isn’t an SFCC-sponsored event, it may be of interest to students who want to develop public speaking or leadership skills, particularly those in Business or Communication-related programs.  It’s also a good chance to learn about Toastmasters.  

WIN PROJECT

The WIN project employs four Navigators who are actively working to recruit individuals who are unemployed or underemployed or are looking to skill up. Benson is currently assigned to SFCC. WIN Navigators focus is to support low-income individuals, people of color, and people recovering from substance use disorders or those who have been incarcerated to place them into training programs, and connect them with services, resources, employers, and further training to support their success.  Please visit the website with this link https://www.nnm-win.com/community-support
