SFCC announces Veterans’ Scholarship recipients

Frances Jessop and Wyetta Bradley awarded scholarships

Santa Fe Community College announces that Wyetta Bradley and Frances Jessop were awarded Veterans’ scholarships. The scholarship fund for veterans and their dependents was established through a partnership among Santa Fe Community College Foundation, the City of Santa Fe Veterans Advisory Board and U.S. Bank.

Frances Jessop was “a Navy brat,” who moved numerous times throughout her childhood. Her father served for 23 years with the U.S. Navy including service during the Vietnam War. Her scholarship is helping her earn a certificate in greenhouse management. “The teachers at the college are great.  They teach the day-to-day management skills that I want to learn,” Jessop said. “My goal is to manage a non-profit greenhouse to reduce food insecurity and food inequity particularly for children. I’m also interested in operating a farm.” She’s eager to get into the field, but would also like to continue her studies to earn an Associate in Applied Science in Greenhouse Management.

Wyetta Bradley, a fourth-generation New Mexican, served in the U.S. Army during the Operation Desert Storm era while based at Fort Sam Houston.  Bradley has spent years working in a variety jobs in the medical profession in hospitals, home health care, nursing homes and clinics. Bradley has also worked as an actress. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is currently working on her pre-requisites for the nursing program. The single mother said she had to put her educational dreams on hold while parenting and earning a living. “I love people and caring for them. I truly believe that being of service is my calling and I would like the opportunity to continue to do it as informed and educated as I can be,” Bradley said. “This scholarship is making a real difference in my life.”

The SFCC Veterans scholarship supports veterans and their dependents who are not normally eligible to receive educational benefits. For more information on the scholarship, contact the Financial Aid office at finacialaid@sfcc.edu or 505-428-1268.
