Santa Fe Community College Library is hosting an online lecture, “Travelogue: Adventures in Siem Reap, Cambodia,” featuring Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Academic Director Charlie Shultz talking about his recent volunteer assignment teaching about hydroponics. The free presentation is scheduled for 1-2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29 on Zoom. Pre-register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ShultzOct2024. Registrants will receive a link the morning of the lecture.
Shultz will share images and insights from his recent trip to Cambodia while serving on a two-week assignment on a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Farmer-2-Farmer Volunteer Assignment. The assignment included delivering an intensive hydroponics workshop for agriculture extension agents and university students. A simplified hydroponics manual was also created for high school teachers to use with students with the goal of increasing interest in agriculture and other STEM-related fields. This manual will be incorporated into the current SFCC’s CEA program content.
In his online lecture, Shultz will discuss his work with rural Cambodian farmers and will highlight the wonders of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat with colorful images from his trip. Visit https://www.sfcc.edu/person/richard-c-shultz/ to read Shultz’s full biography.
Shultz frequently shares his knowledge of hydroponics and highlights SFCC’s CEA program both with international and regional audiences. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, using nutrient-rich water instead. In this system, plants’ roots are submerged in or supported by a nutrient solution, allowing them to directly absorb essential minerals. Hydroponics can promote faster growth, higher yields, and more efficient use of water and space compared to traditional soil gardening.
SFCC’s CEA program focuses on learning to grow using hydroponic and aquaponic practices. Aquaponics is a sustainable farming system that combines aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil) in a symbiotic environment. The (CEA) program is designed for those who are interested in pursuing a sustainable agriculture career and learning about modern farming practices to efficiently enhance plant growth and create sustainable production systems.
