Scribe Mini Station at SFCC Library

Santa Fe Community College Library announces that it has partnered with the New Mexico State Library to offer access to a Scribe Mini Station for individuals eligible for Blind and Print-Disabled services to enable them to download audio books. SFCC Library is the first academic library in the country to offer this service.

The Scribe Mini is a self-service station for patrons who are familiar with the digital cartridge process. This service will be available to members of the public (who are eligible for Blind and Print-Disabled services) during SFCC Library’s open library hours. Read more information about the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled and applications for using the service can be found here:

SFCC Library Director Valerie Nye said, “Working with the State Library on this project is allowing us to have a greater depth of knowledge about audio materials available to our students and their families. We are also looking forward to the opportunity to intentionally invite State Library patrons to the SFCC campus to take advantage of this expanding service.”

Nye sees the partnership with the State Library as an exciting opportunity to connect students and their family members who may need what is often called “talking book” service to the State Library. She anticipates that eligible members of the public will come from areas that are near the college, such as the Rancho Viejo neighborhood, but also looks forward to serving people from nearby Pueblo communities and underserved rural areas.

Sam Lundberg, Reader Advisor for the Library for the Blind & Print Disabled, said, “We are very excited to have SFCC as a pilot site for this initiative.  Our program is open to all New Mexicans with a print disability, including students with qualifying reading disabilities, and we hope this partnership will help expand access for individuals who might not otherwise know they qualify.”
