Santa Fe Community College’s Visual Arts Gallery presents LAUNCH!, an exhibition by the Sculpture Union art club of SFCC. This inaugural event features selections from each of the group’s members. The exhibit opens with a public reception on Thurs., Sept. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition continues through Nov. 1.
The exhibition includes sculpture in diverse media and conceptual approaches from SFCC sculpture students including Janet Abrams, Colin Barker, Faye Bates, David Burling, Charlie Carruthers, Cary Cluett, Dason Culver, Monique DeNys, Rose Driscoll, Lisa Freeman, Douglas Hall, Marty Helldorfer, Ezra Hubbard, Caroline LeBlanc, Nina Mastrangelo, Royce Montoya, Annette Morreale, Susan Ohori, Tom Osgood, Dick Podmore, John Shoemaker, Spencer Snyder, Karen Taliakos, Penny Truitt and R. J. Ward.
The Sculpture Union, a recently formed club, includes students, faculty and staff with a wide variety of styles, experience and backgrounds. Their many talents are nourished and expanded with the help of outstanding faculty, many of whom exhibit nationally and internationally in a variety of media, and the excellent facilities at the community college. Many of the students have also shown their work at galleries across the U.S. Each member has selected one of his or her best works, promising a very eclectic display in a wide variety of media.
SFCC offers an Associate of Arts in Fine Arts degree with a concentration in sculpture. Courses are designed for transfer to university or college studio art programs. The program includes options for an internship component and professional development courses to build career skills. With four dedicated sculpture studios, a covered exterior workspace and an exterior courtyard, the Sculpture Program emphasizes pluralistic approaches to sculpture as a means of visual communication. Diverse coursework is offered, including forging, mixed-media assemblage, welding, woodcarving, santero carving, glass casting and stone carving. Students are encouraged to gain an understanding of traditional and contemporary approaches to sculpture and how it complements other art disciplines. Advanced students have access to private studios on campus.
