Santa Fe Community College and AARP Offer Free Income Tax Help

Santa Fe Community College, in partnership with the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide, will host free income tax preparation assistance beginning Monday, January 29. The annual free tax preparation service will be available in the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center at SFCC, 6401 Richards Ave.

Beginning January 29, Tax-Aide Santa Fe will be available Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Assistance will be available through April 17, except when the college is closed (March 19-25 for spring break and March 30-April 1 for spring holiday). In addition, tax preparation assistance will be available starting Mon., Feb. 12 and run through Fri., April 13 (except Fri., March 30) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 417 Agua Fria Street, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information about the services at Our Lady of Guadalupe, please call 505-469-5717.

In addition to providing the location for tax preparation services, SFCC accounting students who were trained specifically for the service will be among the volunteers available to assist anyone in filing their taxes.

Exceptions for help in preparation may be made if the client has unusually complicated tax circumstances. The service is also not available to those with rental income or business income with expenses of $25,000 or more, a home office deduction, employees, inventory or an operating loss.

Those seeking assistance with their tax return must have all tax forms collected prior to coming in for help. Be sure to bring all of the information and documents you need, including these items:

  • You must bring in last year’s printed tax return
  • A photo ID and Social Security cards for yourself and your children
  • All of your tax documents (W-2 year end wage forms from each job, for each person)
  • If self-employed, all the income and expenses from your work and all 1099s
  • If unemployed, the W2-G form from Workforce Solutions
  • Social security year end statements
  • All 1099s received (including those reflecting: Interest dividends, stock or CD sales, gambling winnings or losses, pension income)
  • Proof of health insurance
  • A list of expenses if you paid for child care, college or vocational training
  • A list of medical expenses, anything paid out of pocket or not covered by insurance and mileage traveled to the doctor’s office
  • A list of charitable donations
  • A blank check to receive your refund via direct deposit, should you be eligible for one.

Tax-Aide volunteers will help clients on a first-come, first-served basis.
