New Mexico Suicide Prevention Initiative

Feedback

Suicide in New Mexico is a crisis we cannot ignore. With one of the highest suicide rates in the nation, New Mexico is facing an urgent need for widespread suicide prevention training. By offering suicide prevention training across the state, our goal is to train 2% of New Mexico’s population by June 2027—empowering communities with the knowledge and skills to recognize, intervene, and prevent suicide.

Help us meet the challenge! Together, we can make a lasting impact on suicide prevention in New Mexico.

About

Suicide in New Mexico is a silent epidemic. Tragically, New Mexico has one of the highest suicide rates in the country, with over 600 deaths by suicide every year. The New Mexico Suicide Prevention Initiative (NMSPI) was created to confront this crisis head-on and meet the challenge of suicide prevention. This state-funded initiative focuses on providing suicide prevention training to people across the state, equipping them with the skills to recognize the signs of suicide, ask the right question, persuade someone through listening to seek help, and refer them to the appropriate services.

You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference. Just like CPR, a person trained in suicide prevention can be trained to help save a life. Whether you’re a concerned friend, teacher, neighbor, healthcare worker, or community leader, this training provides the tools you need to respond effectively to someone in crisis.

By June 2027, we aim to train 2% of New Mexico’s population, creating a robust network of community members who are prepared to intervene before it’s too late. Every life is precious. By working together, we can reduce stigma and build a supportive, responsive network to combat this silent epidemic.
