Founded in 1965, New Mexico Junior College, located just north of Hobbs in the southeastern corner of the state, enjoys the distinction of being the first junior college built after the 1963 Junior College Act was signed into law. Groundbreaking for the administration and science buildings, as well as two vocational-technical buildings, was held February 1966. In September, NMJC opened its doors to 728 students.

In the ensuing decades, New Mexico Junior College has expanded significantly, now occupying 243 total acres, with approximately 500,000 square ft. of building space. Currently, the campus has a student population of approximately 3,000 students and a facility count of 24 buildings, including the Western Heritage Museum & Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame, a new Training & Outreach Center, new student apartments, and a baseball field, track, driving range, tennis courts, greenhouse, and rodeo complex.

Dr. Steve McCleery, president since 1998, has led the college to numerous honors and distinctions. Various sports achievements include regional, conference, and national championships in the college’s NJCAA athletic programs of baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, golf, and men’s and women’s rodeo.

It is NMJC’s distinctive academic and career training opportunities, however, that provide the greatest success for the regional, national, and international students who currently attend the college in pursuit of associate degrees in arts, science, or applied science, or who seek certification in several of NMJC’s programs in the business and industry trades.
