Welding instructor Jake Lovato and SFCC welding student Peter Garbett traveled to Skills USA in Lexington, Kentucky. Garbett earned a seventh place with a score of 91.79 percent in welding sculpture competition. He also earned a certificate in welding sculpture. Both Lovato and Garbett participated in a community service event with Youthbuild while on the trip. Lovato had high score for instructors on a welding simulator and won a new welding helmet.
More than 6,300 students competed at the national showcase of career and technical education.
Students were invited to the event to demonstrate their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in 102 hands-on occupational and leadership competitions including robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. Industry leaders from 600 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions evaluated the contestants against their standards for entry-level workers.
