HEC Journey: Samantha Vigil

Samantha Vigil, student in New Mexico Highland University’s Social Work program at the Santa Fe Higher Education Center

“I initially started going to Santa Fe Community College when I was in high school in The MASTERS Program. I had heard about the Santa Fe Higher Education Center. When I was getting ready to graduate high school, the thing was for everyone to go to college out of town, and that was something I couldn’t afford. Even when I graduated from the community college, everyone was going out of town, and I couldn’t afford it. Just driving to New Mexico Highlands University would have been too much for me.

The HEC was this middle ground. The location is accessible, I can do what I need to do here. I can do homework. There’s a computer room and study rooms that students can use, which was very helpful. They even have whiteboards where I could put my problems up on the board. There’s a student employee in the Social Work program who makes herself available to us. It’s such a really good program. Everyone there is so friendly, and you can always ask for help if you’re not sure. They will give you the information you need. The staff is always kind and pleasant. The same with teachers, they’re so understanding. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have continued school if there wasn’t a program like this accessible for me.” ~ Samantha Vigil
