Gerald Clay Memorial Basketball Tournament

A report from Herman Garcia, facility director of the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center on the recent Gerald Clay Memorial Basketball Tournament:

The level of commitment and collaboration across departments on campus made the tournament an amazing success. Again, thank you to all who supported our efforts. Jake Lovato and Doug Jones created a beautiful trophy and Marvin Gabaldon made the lanyards for the awards.

The external Santa Fe community was also involved. Councilman Roman Abeyta participated in the free throw contest. Dr. Cervantes and Vice President Margaret Peters volunteered and we were honored to host Gerald Clay’s family and Ms. Carol Witter.

Twenty-nine teams that participated. Local businesses donated prizes worth over $900. Donors included: Windy Carter (Chiropractor), Running Hub, Pepsi, Dr. Lenny, Violet Crown and Casa Chimayo. Additionally, generous pledges supported the event from SFCC and community members: Affordable Alignments, Samantha Barela, Movement Unlimited, Silas Garcia, NM State Employees Credit Union, SFCC’s Office of Student Development, NM Sports & Fitness, Santa Fe Police Officer’s Association and Spiritual Living.

Proceeds from the event will support scholarships for exercise science students and equipment purchases for the gymnasium, such as a scoreboard.
