Santa Fe Community College Foundation announces that it will host a National Star Party event from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, October 19, in the SFCC Planetarium (Room 215). The event is a fundraiser to support SFCC’s Planetarium. Those who attend will view an exclusive livestream presentation from the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. Associate Dean Kelly Trujillo, Ph.D., is coordinating the event with the Santa Fe Stargazers, a local astronomy club with great expertise, who will offer their own commentary in addition to what is shared by Adler Planetarium. Trujillo shared that the Santa Fe Star Gazers are working on refurbishing SFCC’s older telescopes so they can be used at future Planetarium events.
Schedule for the Event:
- 5 to 6 p.m. Heliophysics Big Year
- 6 to 6:30 p.m.Preview of Night Skies
- 6:30 to 7 p.m.Comet C/2023 A3
SFCC’s Planetarium is one of three important anchors for SFCC’s Space and Earth Experiences (SEE). In addition to the Planetarium, the Science on a Sphere Theater® (SOS) and the Earth Sustainability Tours round out the SEE Experience options for school and community groups. Trujillo said about 4,000 kids have participated since the Fall of 2022. “It really ignites an interest in science in young people,” he said. Community groups can also book a SEE experience tour based on availability. Send an email to seeoutreach@sfcc.edu for more information. The SEE experience project for young people has been supported since July 2023 through a National Science Foundation grant titled “UNdergraduate Institutions Developing Opportunities in STEM (UNIDOS).”
