The NM HEAT Pre-Apprenticeship (PA) Program is an intensive, introductory program, FREE FOR NEW MEXICO RESIDENTS, that provides foundational skills and industry certifications in preparation for successful entry into employment.

All NM HEAT PA graduates will earn 3 Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications, culminating in Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) certification required to conduct professional residential energy audits:

Additional post-graduation certification opportunities include:

  • OSHA 10 workplace safety training and certification
  • AHA Heartsaver® First Aid & CPR/AED training and certification
  • Ride-alongs with certified Home Energy Auditors, including 3 residential energy audits in real NM homes

Program graduates will receive FREE basic Home Energy Auditor toolkits to start their professional careers.

What does a Home Energy Auditor do?

  • BPI-certified Home Energy Auditor Technicians help homeowners save money and create a more comfortable, safe, and healthy living environment. Technicians utilize tools like blower doors, thermal imaging cameras, and combustion analyzers to identify energy leaks, insulation deficiencies, and combustion safety issues. Technicians also use modeling software to identify areas for energy savings, produce audit reports, and develop prioritized scopes of work for their customers.

How long is the program?

Trainees can complete the program in approximately 3 months, with an average time commitment of 8-10 hours per week.

The program is primarily delivered online, with in-person training at the Energy Smart Academy (ESA) laboratory on the campus of Santa Fe Community College (SFCC).

  • Contact hours include approximately 80 hours of online instruction, 20 hours in the lab, and 10 hours of exams.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old by the program start date
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Have a valid New Mexico driver’s license
  • Have a strong desire to learn a skilled trade and commit to the program’s requirements

Do I need prior experience in a trade?

  • No! Applicants can be new to industry, OR be currently employed in a trade.

What if I want to apply, but I need help with things like childcare and transportation?

  • We are able to provide trainees with support services on a case-by-case basis.
