Campus Update from the Interim President

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend. Now that we are returned from the Thanksgiving break, there are only a few weeks until the end of the semester, and we have a lot on the horizon.

Statewide Bond Success! Thank you for your assistance in promoting the vote on Bond D for Education and Bond B for Libraries earlier this month. Both bonds passed with overwhelming support. We will keep you updated on the capital improvements that Bond D funding will cover. As you are aware, renovations and upgrades paid for by the local bond election passed in February – thanks, also, to your efforts – are already underway throughout SFCC and in the Witter Fitness Education Center, which will be closed Dec. 8 through Jan. 13. The gym will be closed Dec. 3 until Feb. 4.

Through Dec. 12: Well-Being. From Therapy Dogs in the Library to Yoga or Noontime Walking to Science on a Sphere and Meditation in the Planetarium, we have organized multiple ways for you and your students to relieve stress and stay healthy as the semester comes to a close. Visit MySFCC for details.

Dec. 4: Governing Board Meeting. The Governing Board will hold a joint meeting with the SFCC Foundation Board on Tuesday, Dec. 4. As always, videos of Governing Board meetings are available on SFCC’s YouTube Channel. The agenda and additional information is at sfcc.edu/about/governing-board.

Dec. 8: SFCC Fall Commencement Ceremony and Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair.

Commencement Please join the college community in celebrating our graduates on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. in the Witter Fitness Education Center. U.S. Representative Ben Ray Lujan is scheduled to provide the keynote address. Rosa Turner will be the student speaker. Originally from Honduras, she’s graduating with degrees in Accounting and Business Administration.

28th Annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair The annual artisan fair with hand-crafted gifts will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Hallway and Campus Center featuring more than 75 artists and craftspeople.

Jan. 10-18: Spring 2019 Welcome Week. Please mark your calendars for the activities and informative sessions during Welcome Week, beginning Thursday, Jan. 10, when full-time faculty return. The campus-wide Convocation meeting will take place on Monday, Jan. 14.

Feb. 13: Active Shooter Drill. Campus Safety and Security have coordinated with local law enforcement to conduct a campus-wide Active Shooter Drill, presented by POMS & Associates. Faculty should plan to hold classes as usual, as all students, faculty and staff are expected to participate in the drill. Please be prepared as there will be interruptions; faculty may want to avoid planning a test or special exercise that morning. Please see the attached document for more details on the drill.

Presidential Search. The Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC) members are currently reviewing applications. Once this review is completed, PSAC will meet to determine the semi-finalists who will participate in first-level interviews. The process remains confidential until the Governing Board announces the finalists.

Sincerely,

Cecilia Y.M. Cervantes, Ph.D.

Interim President
