More than 35 SFCC faculty and staff attended a workshop to adapt their teaching and communication styles to foster better learning for deaf and hard of hearing students. DeafTEC, a National Science Foundation-funded Center of Excellence, presented the Project Access workshop on August 9, 2017 and was supported through Carl D. Perkins funds, the SFCC Foundation and the NSF.
The outcomes of the DeafTEC Project Access workshop include:
- Sensitize faculty to challenges faced by such students in a mainstream environment
- Explain visual classroom techniques
- Present effective use of support service personnel (sign language interpreters, notetakers, tutors, captionists)
- Prepare individual teaching strategy plans
- Assist in mastering strategies to meet the goals of Universal Design in education
The College is seeking funding for additional training in conjunction DeafTEC through an Advancing Technology in Education (ATE) grant application to prepare faculty to better serve all students.
