Credit For Prior Learning

Receive College Credit for Prior Learning – Save Time and Money!

There are a number of ways that you can receive college credit for learning you have acquired through prior education and work experience. Receiving credit for prior learning can significantly reduce your time to completion of a certificate or degree. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) options include the following:

1. Transfer of credit from another institution

a. Submit official transcripts from all schools attended to the SFCC Registrar’s office. Registrar: Barbara Tucci – barbara.tucci@sfcc.edu, 505-428-1264.

b. Transcripts will be evaluated for courses that can be applied to your declared degree at SFCC and have a grade of C or better.

c. The courses will be entered as transfer credits on your SFCC transcript.

2. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test credit

a. Verify on the transfer matrix that you can receive credit through CLEP and how many credits will be awarded.

b. Take a CLEP test in the testing center. Visit the CLEP webpage for instructions.

c. Request to have your test scores sent to SFCC Registrar’s Office.

d. The Registrar’s office approves the credit and posts the credit to your transcript.

3. DSST test credit

a. Verify on the transfer matrix that you can receive credit through DSST and how many credits will be awarded.

b. Take a DSST test in the testing center. Visit the DSST webpage for instructions.

c. Request to have your test scores sent to SFCC Registrar’s office.

d. The Registrar’s office approves the credit and posts the credit to your transcript.

4. AP Test credit

a. Verify on the transfer matrix that you can receive credit for an AP test taken and how many credits will be awarded.

b. Submit your test scores sent to SFCC Registrar’s office.

c. The Registrar’s office approves the credit and posts the credit to your transcript.

5. Military Training Credit

a. Bring your DD-214 (discharge paperwork) to the Registrar’s office and your training will be reviewed through ACE.

b. If any of the ACE recommendations of credit apply to your declared degree program, the registrar will post the approved transfer equivalent course to your transcript.

6. Portfolios for credit

a. On rare occasions, your prior life experience may be considered in exchange for educational credit. Read about the Credit by Portfolio Process and Guidelines.
