Financial Aid - Summer Pell Grant Policy
Pursuant to the Higher Education Act, students may be eligible to receive additional Pell grant funds in the summer 2011 term. If they received less than 100% of their first scheduled award in the Fall and Spring terms, they are eligible to receive, and must be paid, the remaining portion of their first scheduled award in the Summer term up to the amount of the payment for the payment period, including for less-than-half-time students.
If they have received 100% of their first Pell grant scheduled award during the prior Fall and Spring terms, or if there is insufficient remaining eligibility from the first award to meet the payment for the summer payment period, the student may receive payment from the second scheduled award; but must:
- Be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) in the summer term
- Be taking hours in the summer term that are attributable to the second academic year in the award year, meaning that the sum of hours successfully completed in the fall and spring terms, plus hours enrolled for summer at the census date must be greater than 24. For example, a student has earned 21 semester hours in the Fall and Spring terms and is taking 6 in summer (3 of summer being attributable to the second academic year). Successful completion means grades of: P, A, B, C, or D.
- Be otherwise eligible for Pell grant payment (ie. Making satisfactory academic progress, enrolled in an eligible major, Pell-eligible EFC, etc.)
Students transferring to SFCC for the summer term:
We will assume that if the student has been paid 100% of their Pell at a previous institution, they will be eligible for a second pell grant in the Summer term at SFCC, provided they meet all other Pell grant requirements.
This will be determined by checking the NSLDS (National Student Loan Database System) website. If NSLDS indicates that the student had withdrawn from the prior Fall or Spring terms after receiving their Pell grant, the student will need to provide a transcript to the SFCC Records Office for evaluation to determine if they meet the requirements in the second bullet above. If the student does not meet that requirement, they will not be eligible for a second Pell grant for the summer term.
For the summer 2011 term, we will not be reviewing SARS/ISIRS for the 2011-12 award year to determine summer 2011 eligibility. All summer 2011 eligibility will be determined by 2010-2011 SAR/ISIR data. Special Circumstances will not be considered to waive the above guidelines for summer 2011.
NOTE: This will be the last summer that additional Pell grant funds will be available.
