Film Crew Training I, II and III

So You Want to Work in Film?

Santa Fe Community College's Film Crew Certificate program offers classes, internships and entrepreneurial opportunities to help you get there! Film Crew I is the first course to get you started with the experience and training you need to work in the motion picture industry. On completion of this course you will:

  • Understand the film production process
  • Organize crews and production schedules to produce motion pictures
  • Understand basic on-set protocols and professional behaviors
  • Develop and implement basic on-set safety procedures
  • Assist professional producers and directors in pre-production and post-production used in motion pictures

Students successfully completing the Film Crew Training I class may then opt to participate in the internship program or continue on to more specialized classes including Film Crew Training II that looks at the management jobs on a movie set and specialized classes in make-up artistry. All our classes are taught by professionals currently producing work in the film and media industry. Read Faculty Bios.

FILM 140
Film Crew I

Mondays 5:30-9:00 p.m.
Instructor: Sarah Loeppke

This course will be taught by working film professionals. Content will be lecture and hands-on. Students complete the semester by working as part of an actual film crew. Offered in collaboration with IATSE film union and NM Film Office designed to train below-the-line film crew members. Instructor's note: Anyone interested in working in the New Mexico film industry will find this course valuable. Students wishing to be directors or producers will learn all aspects of how a film is made and the work needed to complete a successful project. Corequisite: FILM 140L.

Film Crew I Lab

Students complete International Alliance of Technical Stage Employees (IATSE 480, OSHA) safety training, a fitness assessment and training in basic nutrition and environmental concerns specific to film set work. Students will complete technical workshops for equipment operation. Students will be responsible for fees required for certification. Corequisite: FILM 140.

Film Crew II

This is the second level of the film crew training program that is designed to train students to become working members of film crews. It will be taught by working film professionals. Content will be lecture and hands-on. Students will learn script breakdown, budgeting and scheduling and the essential tools for managing a successful film shoot. Students complete the semester by working as part of an actual film crew. Offered in collaboration with IATSE film union and NM Film Office designed to train below-the-line film crew members. Prerequisite: FILM 140. Instructor's note: This second class is for anyone who wants to gain the skills to be a successful producer, assistant director, unit production manager, production coordinator or for those seeking to eventually produce and direct their own motion pictures.

The third of three courses (FILM 140, FILM 141 and FILM 240) designed to train students to become working members of film crews. This course will be taught by working film professionals. Content will be lecture and hands-on. Students complete the semester by working as part of an actual film crew. Students will be accepted in four tracks of study: Director, Director of Photography/Gaffer, Producer/Assistant Director, and Digital Image Technician/Editor. Film Crew Internship

This course provides students with an opportunity to enlarge and complete their learning experience by taking paid and non-paid positions in a real working environment. Students must have successfully completed Film Crew Training I to participate in the internship program. Instructor's note: After taking Film Crew Training I, students may sign up to take the internship program. We work with productions state-wide to provide opportunities for students to explore jobs in the New Mexico film industry.
