Student Journals
I Am Peter Aragon. I have been involved with Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe for 6 years. I was at a 2nd to 3rd grade reading level.
This program has not cost me a dime, only my time and determination to learn. I thank LVSF for all the help they provided for me. They have tutored me in my reading and writing skills, and without this program I would not be able to do many of the things I do now.
The tutors have brought up my vocabulary, and helped me not be ashamed of my reading skills. They also have given me confidence to do what I need to do. My dream was to be a D.J – and that dream came true. I was a DJ at KSFR 90.7 FM, at Santa Fe Community College, and that is where I started. Now I am at KSWV AM 810, all thanks to LVSF and my tutors.
Just Last year I took a training work shop and now I am a Tutor for Challenge New Mexico. I am also a member on the board of students for LVSF. I am currently trying to get more students more involved in this program.
I think helping other people to read and write, or speak English as a second language, is a whole new world. I promote this program on the radio, and other means of media. So I thank Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe, and Proliteracy, for ALL that they have done for me. It is a whole New World out there, and we need to be encouraging people to learn to read. Reading is the key to freedom!
I would like to share with you these last few things that I think are important. Thanks.
My name is Victor Balderhausen. I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 49 streets on Cypress southwest the bad side of Albuquerque, where all the bad news bears live. Where they did not care about you at all. My mom would work 16 hour a day to make a life for us. My mom would pray for us everyday.
I was in good home, and we were in a home were you could not get mad. I only went to school for four days out of the week. The neighborhood groups helped my mom to take care of us. I did not know much about my mom at the time. My mom took the bus to work everyday and would come home from work and take off again. That was 7 days a week. My mom was a LPN nurse. My sister would work at home.
In April 16th 1960 I had open-heart surgery. I was 15 on April 14. Today I give all the glory to Yahweh.
Eight year ago I got a call from the Adult Basic Ed. that I had passed my GED test, so I called them back and said that this call is not right. I asked how much it will cost me to go to school there. She said free to people that live in Santa Fe. That was six year ago. I could not read at all. My mom would say to me there is no limit on what I can do.
I took my reading test and I am at 7th grade reading level now I love LVSF and it's the key for my life.
