How long is the session timeout set for Webmail (OWA)?

(Timeout: the maximum inactive time before your computer exits the email program.)
(OWA: Outlook Web Access)
On the logon page of OWA, if you check “This is a public or shared computer,” the timeout for a "Public Computer" is set to 30 minutes. If you check “This is a private computer,” the timeout for a "Private Computer" is set to 4 hours.

If you access OWA through JACK, your timeout will be automatically set to 30 minutes. Therefore, if you are using your own computer, it is recommended that you go directly to webmail (webmail.sfcc.edu) and not go through JACK, so you can opt for the longer timeout.

Also, OWA will automatically save your message in the Draft folder if there is no activity within webmail for 10 minutes.

Why should I empty my email Deleted Items folder?

Items that you delete are moved to the Deleted Items folder, but are not permanently deleted until that folder is emptied. Over time, the contents of the Deleted Items folder can consume a large amount of your data file or e-mail mail account server storage quota. Outlook can be configured to automatically empty the Deleted Items folder, or you can manually empty the folder at any time.

  • To Automatically empty the Deleted Items folder:
    1. Click the File tab.
    2. Click Options.
    3. On the Advanced tab, under Outlook Start and Exit, select the "Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting" check box.
    4. To be notified before the Deleted Items folder is emptied automatically, on the Advanced tab, under Other, select the "Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting" check box.
  • To Manually empty the Deleted Items folder
    1. To open the Folder List view, at the bottom of the Navigation Pane, click Folder List or press CTRL+6.
    2. Right-click the Deleted Items folder and then click Empty Folder.
