SFCC Celebrates Earth Week April 20-24

Santa Fe Community College will celebrate Earth Week April 20 through April 24 with various activities on campus, including tours, presentations, screenings and more. Events are free and open to the community.

Schedule of events for Earth Week at Santa Fe Community College:

 

Tues., April 21

Bike Ride to SFCC and workshop

7:30 a.m. Meet at Sirius Cycles at Rodeo Plaza

11:00 a.m. Workshop - Basic flat repair and cycle maintenance

1-2:15 p.m. Group bike ride to IAIA and back to SFCC campus

Earth Day events at SFCC

10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Resource Fair - main hallway

Santa Fe Watershed Association, Santa Fe Trails, Master Gardeners, Esperanza, SFCC Recycling, Wild Earth Guardians, Animal Protection of New Mexico, Solid Waste Management, and more.

10:00-11:15 a.m. “Bioneer Films” - facilitated by Assistant Professor, Shawn Miller, Plumbing and HVAC, Sustainable Technologies Center – Jemez Rooms

11:30-11:45 a.m. Sustainability & Food Production Systems - Professor Eric Highfield, SFCC Greenhouse Management Program, presenting information on aquaponic food production - Jemez Rooms

11:45 a.m. - Noon Bioenergy Eco-Friendly Solutions - Professor Luke Spangenburg, SFCC Biofuel Program Director, presenting on Bioenergy systems and how they integrate into food, water and energy security - Jemez Rooms

12:00-12:15 p.m. Energy, Water and Food- What can you do? Professor and Director of SFCC’s Green Energy Building, Amanda Hatherly, presenting information on how our personal use of water affects energy use and climate change – Jemez Rooms

12:15-1:00 p.m. Ecotechnics: Learning to Integrate with the Biosphere - Dr. Mark Nelson, Student Government Association Earth Day Speaker, presenting on the connection that humans have to the entire biosphere and how we can restore, heal and strengthen the Earth - Jemez Rooms

1:00-2:00 p.m. “Ecological Footprints – Environmental approach to Conservation”

Poster and Art Contest – main hallway

2:00 p.m. Tours of the Trades and Advanced Technology Center - meet at the designated table in the main campus hallway.

2:30-4:00 p.m. Film Showing: “Cowspiracy” a documentary following filmmaker Kip

and Anderson as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet

5:30-7:00 p.m. – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Jemez Rooms - facilitated review after screening with Amanda Hatherly and Rae Sikora

 

Wed., April 22

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Film showing: “Journey of the Universe” narrates the 14 billion year story of the universe’s development, from the great flaring forth at the universe’s inception to the emergence of simple molecules and atoms to the evolution of galaxies, stars, solar systems and planetary life. Planetarium
