Interpreter Services For Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Interpreter Services

Sign language interpreters are available to facilitate communication between an instructor, a student who is deaf or hard of hearing, and other students in a class.  Some interpreters use ASL, others Signed English, though most commonly they will use a combination of these modalities.  Requests for sign language interpreters must be made through Disability Services.  The following are some of the basic rules regarding interpreting services:

  • Students should request interpreting services at least two weeks in advance of the date they will be needed.  If an interpreter is needed in a class for an entire semester, the request should be submitted at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.  Any less time does not assure the availability of an interpreter.
  • Students using interpreters are required to notify Disability Services about any changes to schedules or to make arrangements for final exams.
  • A student who cannot attend a specific class must notify Disability Services at least 24 hours before class time.  Missing three classes without prior notification will result in the cancellation of interpreting services.
  • All students must be on time for class or the interpreter will not wait longer than the required times.

Interpreters must adhere to professional guidelines.  The code of ethics set by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf puts forth the principles of ethical behavior to be followed by all interpreters.
